Daily Roundup 1.05.07

Farmer and Greek Guy got waived. So long, it’s been good to know ye. Personnel moves a-plenty coming this weekend.
The Sonics are rumored to sign Andre Brown from the NBDLs Sioux Falls SkyForce later today. Edit: Brown has been signed.
Penny Hardaway likely to follow. No word on when the trash talk about “Backcourt 2000″ will begin on the ESPN Sonics/Suns boards. Longtime site authors & readers will know what I’m talking about.
Damien gets groovy. No doubt dude is playing better as a starter. He’s also helping my fantasy team whilst Rashard recoups.
Wilkins agreed, adding that no one has “quit on coach — and I don’t think any of us will.
“We’ve had pretty much every problem that you could possibly have and guys are still fighting. Winning cures everything. You put a couple of wins under our belt and no one will talk about any job security for anyone anymore.”
I rarely care for headlines but this one is awesome. Frank does a nice bust on Isaiah, which is kind of like shooting fish in a barrel these days but still always worthwhile. Nate Robinson won’t play in case you were wondering, he’s still suspended.
Mr. Baker figures out David Locke’s secret identity.
I like this alter ego for Locke.
Good luck to the Hawks this weekend. I think they’ll need it.

“Sonics Will Sign Andre Brown later today. ”
Where did this come from? Did Frank cut that from his blog entry after you posted?
Brown played for the Sonics on the 2005 Rocky Mountain team, but wasn’t a standout rebounder there. He averaged 9 a game at DePaul.
January 5th, 2007 at 11:43 am
I should have put “rumored to” and will fix right now. I was sorting through a bunch of different sources this morning & I thought Frank had posted it in his blog, probably just teh wrong link. OTOH maybe things fell apart at the last minute or someone they liked more got cut.

Yeah, I see what I did. I meant to have that link pointing at andre brown’s NBDL page but mistakenly put Frank’s blog instead. Sorry bout that Patrick.

Wow, it’s fast & furious around here this morning. Thanks Shawn, I’ll update …
January 5th, 2007 at 11:52 am
The guys on draftexpress.com report that us signing Brown is “according to sources close to the situation”.
http://draftexpress.com/blogs.php?blogid=6
Though, he’s a good rebounder and a great athlete, he still isn’t the shot blocker we need.
So Sene should stay and get his share of minutes at the Center spot.
January 5th, 2007 at 11:57 am
Cheers for the SC.com French & German connections this morning! Way to bring it guys.
January 5th, 2007 at 12:04 pm
I would probably give all the minutes at the Center position to Petro and Sene.
We need size and shot-blocking at that position.
January 5th, 2007 at 12:22 pm
Will Brown be able to play tonight ?
I’m afraid Lee is going to grab 20 boards against our frontcourt

Andre Brown seems to be quite athletic.
January 5th, 2007 at 12:31 pm
“I would probably give all the minutes at the Center position to Petro and Sene.

I’d be satisfied with somebody who boxes out instead of standing there.
I wonder if Brown has practiced with the team yet or is practicing today … that probably determines whether or not he plays tonight, though considering he’s on a 10 day you’d think they didn’t sign him to sit on the bench. I guess we’ll see. Maybe Frank or Locke will put up an update after practice.
January 5th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
Not that I’m connecting any dots or anything, so, here are some random thoughts:
Will the signing of Brown, a forward, allow them to trade another?
They still need a vet center and they will likely have to trade for one.
You know who else is athletic, Chris Wilcox.
he’s not a small forward.
Just sayin’
January 5th, 2007 at 12:42 pm
I was wondering the same thing Mike … that is, if this would be a prelude to another move involving Nick, Wilcox or Danny.
January 5th, 2007 at 12:48 pm
Just my opinion, but I don’t see the interest of trading for a starting center now.
The season is already over. Adding a Jamal Magloire or a PJ Brown type of player to the roster will simply hurt our draft position and slow down Petro and Sene developpement by reducing their playing time.
January 5th, 2007 at 12:50 pm
Oh great. Now I don’t get to see Andre Brown play for the Skyforce… Oh well, I hope he can contribute!
January 5th, 2007 at 12:50 pm
I doubt that we’ll deal either Nick or Chris(though, I wouldnt mind if we could get someone usefull for Nick), so Danny would be the only option.
Though, I dont see any team trading anything usefull for Danny(at least no one that doesnt have a horrible contract)….
January 5th, 2007 at 12:55 pm
“Andre Brown has been named D-League Player of the Month for December. Brown averaged 23.3 points and 11.2 rebounds over 13 games during the month.”
Pretty nice stats for December. Hopefully he can do that for the Sonics…That would be peachie.
January 5th, 2007 at 1:10 pm
Why in the world would the Sonics sign Penny Hardaway? That is grasping at the last straw in the barn.
Play Sene, Play Gelabale. Trade Ray for a good post defender/player. the Sonics played better with Rashard (they easily could have won 3 of those road games they lost).
How about a front court of Sene (C), Petro (PF) and Gelabale (SF)? No communication problems anyway.
January 5th, 2007 at 1:11 pm
“Oh great. Now I don’t get to see Andre Brown play for the Skyforce… Oh well, I hope he can contribute!”
Sam, have you been able to see any Skyforce games this year? If so could you please give us a review of what Brown looks like.
So hard to judge D-League guys based on stats alone.
January 5th, 2007 at 1:20 pm
“Sam, have you been able to see any Skyforce games this year?”
No, I haven’t. I was just about to ask my friend for a couple of tickets (because his where his wife works she can get some free tickets). I heard about Andre Brown and since I moved up here I thought I should go take a look. I can’t find any video of him right now, I will watch the local news to see if they have a story. Hopefully they will play a little highlight reel of him. If they do, I’ll tell you how he plays.

“Why in the world would the Sonics sign Penny Hardaway? That is grasping at the last straw in the barn.”
It’s only a 10 day contract. Maybe they envision him playing a role similar to what Chuck Person did for the Sonics in years past. Basically a end of bench vet to bring experience and play 10-15 mpg at most.
January 5th, 2007 at 1:54 pm
Brown played for the Spurs during the Rocky Mountain Revue
11,9pts (64%) and 5,4 rebounds in 24 minutes per game

Are commas instead of decimal points some sort of french thing?
Closet Carpenters fan here (kill me now for admitting this).
At first I was down on the idea of signing Penny, but after thinking about how difficult it is for the Sonics to execute half court sets in the 4th quarter, i’ve reconsidered.

“Are commas instead of decimal points some sort of french thing? ”
Yep
Sorry

A decade ago, Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway was a top-notch, world-class basketball player. Currently, though, “Penny” is an over-the-hill, washed-up has-been who shouldn’t've come out of retirement.
Unless Chris “Li’l’ Penny” Rock is a part of the package, Rick Sund shouldn’t sign “Penny” to a 10-day contract. Rock, unlike Hardaway, would at least draw a crowd to the Key Arena.
January 5th, 2007 at 2:55 pm
I asked for a description on a DePaul message board and they described Reggie Evans.
“Fierce rebounder who couldn’t hit a free throw and struggled with post moves. I wish we had someone that rebounded at one tenth of the level Brown did.
He was a monster on the glass.”

I hear you there. Another guy who can pass would be a blessing. I’m not sure this is a move that’ll necessarily result in many wins but at this point it’s worth a try.
AK: A 10-day contract has no risk attached and it’s not as if Desmond Farmer or Mike Wilks were playing themselves into the rotation. In terms of who the Sonics are looking at for these 11th & 12th men I would rather see them look at guys like Penny rather than NBDLers just for the knowledge and leadership factor. This club needs more veteran players around.

“I asked for a description on a DePaul message board and they described Reggie Evans.”
Hopefully this makes everyone happy that said that they wanted Reggie back.

Hope the Knicks are wearing their cups tonight.

How exactly did the Sonics play better when Ray was out than since Rashard has been out:
Opponents without Ray:
HOME: ATL, NOK, GSW (all wins)
AWAY: MIL, CHI, CLE, DET, MEM (all losses)
Opponets without Rashard:
HOME: DAL, TOR, NOK, BOS (three wins)
AWAY: MIN, DAL HOU (all losses)
I didn’t count the Denver game where they both didn’t play. But all it seems to me is that the Sonics have beat the teams they were supposed to and lost to the teams they had worse records than…hasn’t been much of a difference either way.

“Hope the Knicks are wearing their cups tonight.”
LOL!!!
That is so freakin funny!
I like Ernie Johnson’s take:
“oh..looks like he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar”
LOL.
Then they interview Kaman and he is just like, ya he grabed my nuts. What do you want me to say?
Priceless.
Reggie “The Cookie Monster” Evans

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Cookie Monster LOL … I prefer the Nutcracker
January 5th, 2007 at 4:54 pm
Both moves are fine with me. 10 day contracts don’t run much risk other than losing the guys they’ve released( no loss there for Seattle). Taking a chance on a rebounder whose game has been described as close to Kenyon Martins style and a veteran like Hardaway isn’t so bad a chance to take. We’re not talking trades here.
Although he’s not my first choice either(nor my second), if the Sonics could get both Dale Davis and Antonio McDyess then that’s two more veterans in the fold to see if experience makes a difference or not. If Brown turns out to at least contribute, then trading Fortson and Collison for Davis and McDyess could work.
I just don’t see any big trades on the horizon and a couple of small things like this to get through the season seems more likely.
January 5th, 2007 at 5:10 pm
How old is Penny these days? I hope he’s atleast in decent shape .
January 5th, 2007 at 5:46 pm
Well, DK, the Detroit Pistons won’t trade Antonio McDyess. As it is, McDyess and Jason Maxiell are a one of the best backup frontcourts in the entire NBA.
With regards to roster construction and financial felxibility, the Pistons and the San Antonio Spurs are the epitome of effectively operated franchises. The Seattle Supersonics, among other teams, should take notes.
January 5th, 2007 at 5:47 pm
My friend up in Bellingham saw him (Penny) play once against the Slam. He said he was ok, but his knees weren’t that great.
Haha, side note: Dennis Rodman also plays for an ABA team. He plays for Tijuana

Reading the original article on Damien makes me respect him a lot more. Instead of being disgruntaled and all pissed off about how things aren’t exactly like he wants them to be, he continued to work hard and tried to improve himself as well as try to get back on Hill’s page, and you can see how much better he is on court because of it.
People knock him a lot for “not knowing his role” or “believing that he is/can be a star in this league,” but thats a completely arrogant statement. He’s human, he’s got dreams. Damien can’t be anything other than what his personality is, and that is optimistic. You gotta respsect that from a guy, he’s got natural hunger and wants to improve himself constantly, and that is more than what I can say about a guy than say… Chris Wilcox.

I’m interested to see how Eddy Curry plays these days. I haven’t seen him play in a while……but it looks like he is putting together a pretty decent season thus far.
Crawford seems to always go off in his homecoming games. 31 second half points vs us in 2005. Hate or love his type of game…..you can’t deny that the kid has skills, despite his inconsistency.
We need a win tonight. I need a win tonight.
