Daily Roundup 1.16.07

Posted on Tuesday, January 16th, 2007 at 9:54 am by Xteve

I don’t know about you but I’m getting just a little tired of snow …

So I’m rounding up from home today folks, I’m right in the middle of a pretty rotten cold. The good: not having to go to work. The bad: cabin fever & boredom setting in. The ugly: daytime TV. No matter how hard I try I simply can not muster the energy to give even the slightest of shits about who was best & worst dressed at the Golden Globes last night.

Some old news in here but bear with me:

Sonics sign Andre Brown to a second 10-day. It won’t surprise me if they end up signing him for the rest of the season. The hustle’s contagious, his block on Deron Williams was the defining moment of that game and at this point unless management can literally acquire Dale Davis for some slightly used New Coke basketballs and a second round pick it’s not worth changing things up too much.

Bron Bron & the beasts of the East in town tonight.

“The problem with this guy, when he gets a defensive rebound and leads a break,” Sonics coach Bob Hill said, “I’ve never in my life seen a player of his size as fast with the ball as he is. And he knows it. So he just takes that ball right down the middle of the court.

“And to take a charge on him, you’re gonna get hurt, so consequently no one takes a charge. He’s a special, special player.”

With a much more effective supporting cast around him this year than previously, I might add. Mike Brown’s done a fine job with that club this year.

Will Ray let ‘em fly again tonight?

“You can’t stop Ray Allen because of how good of a shooter he is, how well he handles the ball and how well that team sets screens for him,” James said. “You can’t stop him. You just got to try and contain everybody else.

“Fifty-four points? Now our defense is not going to allow 54 points, but he is going to get some points. We know that.”

Parking may enter into the equation of where to build a new arena. Look for a union spokeslug I won’t name today to distort and utterly lie about the numbers to prove his point.

Two sources said the project now is closing in on $500 million, though Kneeland declined to confirm that figure.

“I don’t mean to jerk you around, but it depends on what you are looking at,” Kneeland said. “We are trying to push the number down. The number came in higher than anticipated primarily because of the cost of parking. We are working on different avenues to deal with the parking issue. I don’t have a number for you now, but it was higher than we anticipated.

“I don’t think the arena is that much more expensive, but the ancillary stuff, the parking, is driving the price up.”

I’ll close with this gem from Frank’s blog:

The Sonics called the Pistons to inquire about Dale Davis, but the Pistons asked for either Earl Watson or Luke Ridnour.

I wouldn’t make that trade in fantasy hoops let alone real life. And as Frank rightly points out it probably doesn’t matter anyways.

Have a nice day, drive safe if you are driving.

That’s just laughable what the Pistons asked the Sonics for in that Dale Davis inquiry. I hope Sund hung up on them after hearing that response.

Glad to see they signed Brown to another 10 dayer. Agreed that it would be nice to see them sign him for the remainder of the season.

As AK likes to pimp, it sure would be a smart move for the Sonics to pick up Will Conroy before someone else does……Trade Wilks to a team needing a backup PG for a future 2nd round draft pick. This one should be a no brainer….and I’m not even an Husky homer……..

  2. Shawn Says:

You have snow in Seattle and in France we have the Warmest winter in almost a century.

Something is going wrong with this planet…

  3. Myk Says:

Count me as someone who is sick of this winter. I am normally a very strong defender of the Seattle summers to people who are from out of town and say it must suck to have it rain all the time…but this is just unreasonable.

  4. Big Chris Says:

It was negative twelve degrees (-12F = -24.4C!!) here last night. And we just laugh at snow. We got 7 inches two days ago, and that wasn’t enough to get them to plow anything but the main streets. Ahh….the joys of Minnesota winters…

    Big Chris

  5. big L Says:

So it sounds like Detroit is keeping Davis and trading Muhammad to the TWolves for Jaric.

  6. Steve Says:

“So it sounds like Detroit is keeping Davis and trading Muhammad to the TWolves for Jaric.”

Just saw that. I’m not a huge Jaric fan but I wouldn’t trade him for Dale Davis, either.

  7. Sonicej Says:

I didn’t realize how much missed the daily roundup until it was gone. Thanks Steve.

  8. Sonicej Says:

    Should read: “I missed”

  9. Wingate Says:

With the high fees associated with parking, the plan as is will probably be rejected by Olympia. But will the Legislature offer a compromise counter-offer? Or does Bennett have the option to turn to City Of Bellevue (or go private with Kemper Freeman Jr) and make it entirely local? Or will the tent fold and he applies for relocation in March, with lip service to continue to look for a solution here to fulfill his promise to keep the team here.

  10. Myk Says:

What’s the big deal about parking? I would say that the Key Arena has done OK with minimal parking. You’d think parking would be the one part of the investment that could pay for itself

  11. Steve Says:

    you’re welcome ej!

w/r/t to the arena it is something this region needs whether they recognize it or not. One Final 4 weekend or political convention in this city would make the town more money than every wine and cheese or froofy art event combined. That’s the thing Van Dyk and Licata don’t talk about.

  12. Patrick Says:

Anyone want my ticket to tonight’s game? I can’t make it, so I’ll offer it up free to a Sonics fan or $1000 for a Cavs fan. Private message psheehy in the SC Forum area if you are interested.

  13. John Says:

    Classic line.

Of course, you’re an uncultured stiff sitting around watching daytime TV that knows not what is most important to people in this region!!!

James is totally special. I love watching that guy play basketball. He’s like KG. You know he’s going to beat you, but you can’t help but watch and cheer the good things they bring to the game.

Now Kome…that’s a different story altogether.

  14. Brad Says:

I agree with Shawn - this planet is stuffed. I wish we had some snow in Australia. I’m surrounded by bushfires, power blackouts and its currently about 31c @ 7am in the morning! Heat & drought for some seattle snow and rain.. How about it? Good trade?

  15. mk Says:

I love global warming….It gets colder!

While I did get into an accident on Thursday (don’t ever let 4WD give you a false sense of security), I can’t say I’d ever get tired of the snow.

  16. Silvio Says:

I agree with Shawn as well.
We(here in Germany) had snow twice and it was for about a day or two. This whole “winter” feels like a longer autumn and I’ve never experienced something like that. This world is going crazy…

BTW: So Parking is a huge financial problem with this arena plan?
I really hope they get this done, cause I just can’t imagine this team being out of the state of washington.

    Cheers Silvio

  17. Dick Tate Says:

Enjoy your warm winter, Europeans. I watched the Al Gore documentary this last weekend and he thinks y’all are headed for another ice age.

  18. montanasupesfan Says:

I remember in ‘97 we got down to -40 Fahrenheit here in Montana.
    Now it’s only -13.

  19. Sam Says:

Hmmm. Al Gore said that “global warming” is coming but I don’t know. See I am sitting here in my basement in South Dakota while it is anywhere from -7 to 5 degrees.
Nice to see Brown got signed again. When Bob Hill was talking about Brown it reminded me of a lot of the players on the Skyforce. Besides their center, usually anyone will take the ball up the court and try to make a play.

  20. myELFboy Says:

I wouldn’t confuse an Al Gore documentary with real science.

  21. Moffet Says:

“I love global warming….It gets colder!”

Well last week I took pictures of prematurely flowering trees at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden and last night killed 12 mosquitos in my apartment and got absolutely no sleep.

  22. ginobililand Says:

now the sonics is in the six place in the draft with this roster. What position will pick? a SF and trade lewis?, a PF and trade wilcox? a SG back up ray allen? or another C like Swift, Petro and Sene?

  23. montanasupesfan Says:

    A PF and trade Wilcox.

  24. SOOPRSONICK DAAd Says:

Peace to every Supes fan, everywhere!!!!!!! Yo Shawn, Whats the chances any other frenchmen would sign up with us? Have they ever expressed intrest in playing together? LOVE ta have em’.

  25. MC Nuggit Says:

Wow, great to hear from Supes fans in Deutschland, Down Under, and Le France, not to mention S. Dakota, Minnehaha, and Montucky! Seems like the New Weather is way more unstable, and kinda violent. Full of surprises.

I think we’re in for a good game tonight, assuming Collision can keep big Z somewhat contained, as I like our combo of Wilkins & Jellybelly to keep Bronbron from absolutely shredding us. I was at the Cavs game last year & the coaching staff told Dwilk to do whatever it took to make Bron shoot from outside in the second half. He did a great job at it, and we pulled out the W.

  26. Shawn Says:

The only french player with real NBA potential who can be signed without the draft is Florent Pietrus, Mickael’s Brother, but I have no idea of what it would cost for a NBA team to buy out his European contract.

I also don’t know if he is interested by the NBA or/and if NBA teams are interested in him but it’s probable. He is a very athletic SF/PF (a bit small to play the PF position in the NBA though), good defender, excellent offensive rebounder…

If he ever comes to the NBA (he has to hurry up as he is 27 if I’m correct) I don’t think he would sign with us if Rashard is still there. Having two compatriots is cool but nothing is better than playing time.

I must admit that I would really like having a Gelabale/Pietrus rotation at the SF position :)

But if you really want french players you’ll probably have to draft them. Noah will probably be in this year’s draft (even if i’m not that high on him) and in the future some great prospects are coming !

Ajinca, Vaty (athletic big men) and especially Nicolas Batum. I really like Batum, he is a Boris Diaw with better shooting skills and a bit more selfish (which is a good thing). He could become a Scottie Pippen type of player and is IMO the future of french basketball

  27. MarkS Says:

“Fifty-four points? Now our defense is not going to allow 54 points, but he is going to get some points. We know that.”

Allen’s 54 points Friday was a game for the ages. It’s pretty much a given Cleveland will double team him tonight. I hope the rest of our guys can make up the difference.

  28. Perfect Says:

Would anybody be interested in a Richard Jefferson/Rashard Lewis trade of some sort?

  29. rensman Says:

NO, i reckon jefferson is overrated, poor outside shooter

  30. Menace Says:

Overrated? When is he ever praised. RJ is the anti Rashard Lewis. A defender, rebounder, and ballhandler.

  31. Scott Says:

    “A defender, rebounder, and ballhandler.”

Ballhandler? The 1/2 season he was asked to be the man in NJ he averaged an astonishing 4.5 TO’s a game.

Not to mention that Lewis is actually a better rebounder than Jefferson is.

  32. Steve Says:

I’d give Gelabale more minutes before I trade for Jefferson. I think you can get defense and rebounding at the swing position for a lot cheaper than $12-15 mil a year.

  33. Spirit of '79 Says:

Listen to these whiners . . . it was 30 below when I went to work this morning, and we’ve had I don’t know how many feet of snow since October (we got a foot overnight 10/15, just to kick off the season).

As for who to take in the draft, let’s see where we wind up first, and who comes out. Obviously, if we’re in the top two and Oden and Durant are there, the answer’s easy . . .

  34. Carnival of the NBA #40 — The Bill Laimbeer Edition | Detroit Bad Boys Says:

[...] onics Central M.O.: All over the Sonics, from stadium issues to shattering my dreams of a Dale Davis for Earl Watson trade. Probably would have obsessed over: Jack Sikma. Hah! I’d like to point [...]
