Daily Roundup 01.25.07

Posted on Thursday, January 25th, 2007 at 10:00 am by Xteve

I’m Lester the Nightfly, respect the seven second delay …

Props to Gary Washburn for bringing it today in a lunchpail. Earl is questionable for tomorrow ( I’ll bet he plays) , Sene’s short stint in the NBDL may be coming to an end, and the day of reckoning for Andre Brown is at hand.

Ray and Slick stump for the arena

“I think if you look at the small picture, people want to say ‘No,’” Watts said. “But if you look at the big picture, all pro sports are good for this city. They’re good for the kids and they’re good for our way of life. We’ve got to find a way to make it happen.”

Watts noted the adversity the Seahawks faced in 1996 when former owner Ken Behring wanted to break the team’s lease with King County and move it to Los Angeles. Watts also talked of what the city might have been like had former Mariners owner Jeff Smulyan moved the baseball team to Tampa, Fla. in 1991.

“Look at what the Seahawks and Mariners have done for this town since then,” said Watts, who thinks the Sonics may move to Bellevue or Renton but won’t move out of state. “People are going to have to look to the (state) Legislature to make it happen.”

Hey, anyone else remember those bumper stickers you used to see about ten years ago that said “Go Seahawks — And Take the Mariners With You!” How retarded do those people look now?

Percy expects Brown to stay

“We don’t have the bodies to be losing anybody right now,” Hill said.

Bennett speaks with other business leaders

It’s part of an overall desire I see from the local megabusiness community to get improvements and make this city and region more business friendly … basically Seattle’s been stuck with their heads in the sand for too long. Boeing said the same thing for years … the city need improvements in infrastructure, transportation incentives, airports, the whole nine yards to be a competitive place for them to do business. It’s the 21st century but Seattle in many ways is stuck in the 1950s and 60s because they didn’t buck up and do things right back in the day. Can this city have mass transit, new arenas, better roads and schools? Of course it can, many other cities manage to have all these things. Puget Sound is just behind the 8-ball because they’ve put off so many needed things for so long that the proverbial bill has come due on a lot of things simultaneously.

Enough of that, moving on …

Dwane Casey gets the shaft

How many coaches is this for KG? How many is this for Ricky Davis? Unfortunate.

In the same article Rashard should either get clearance today or not to begin exercising his injured hand. I don’t know if any of you saw his interview during the Denver broadcast but the knuckle still looked swollen as hell to me.

Not sure about the KG remark. I am pretty sure that he’s only had three (if you don’t count McHale)…that’s pretty good these days

  2. Steve Says:

Myk brings up a good point. I didn’t intend to imply that KG was a coach killer. Ricky Davis is another story. It just seems like the T-Wolves have gone through quite a few coaches, sidekicks and permutations of the team during KGs career, more so than the other guys who’ve been with the same team their whole career and in the league for about the same amount of time…Duncan’s only had one coach, Dirk two.

Let’s see, Bill Blair, Flip Saunders, Kevin McHale, Dwane Casey and now Randy Wittman with a new guy possibly to follow next year.

  3. Shawn Says:

Brown is signed for the remainder of the season

  4. jamminJ Says:

    Brown signed.

  5. Scott Says:

On Mo coming back, I’m not surprised they’re bringing him back. There’s supposed to be an unwritten rule that guys sent down by teams get a certain amount of minutes and he’s not getting them really no matter how he plays.

Last night he only got in for 6 minutes in a game where the team lost by 22, most of that lead being added in the last quarter.

Wonder whats up with Johan? As soon as I start to envision him playing a solid role he’ll throw in a stinker of a week.

  6. McCoy Says:

Did Sene get hurt or something? Is he sick. 6 minutes does not make sense - it is a development league - no matter how bad he is playing he should be playing. I hope the coach is not trying to win games. The incentive structure may be a little skewed.

Why doesn’t the NBDL just scrimmage every day? That would be much more valuable than what they appear to do now. Do they really make a profit?

  7. SonicBurrito Says:

Whoooo!!! ESPN says this trade works, so let’s call Sonic management and let them know!

    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=1985~3029~1731~2506~996~3045~2781&teams=29~29~29~29~25~25~25

Seriously, though, here I am again. Three wins in a row, and my hope springs eternal for the playoffs. One loss, and I’m back to thinking “blow it up”. The Sonics need to figure out before the deadline whether they want try and win with the R&R combo, or if they want to tear it down and start over. If they want to win (deep down, don’t we all want this team to just win), I think they have the young players to get a trade like the above done, WITHOUT moving Ray or Rashard.

If they want to blow it up, let’s get on with it.

  8. Dick Tate Says:

A few of the reasons KG has had so many coaches: Glen Taylor, McHale, the Joe Smith fiasco, Terrell Brandon’s career ending injury, JR Rider, Gugs, Wally Z, Kandi-man, Starbury, Cheroke Parks, Stanley Roberts, Sprewell, William Avery, Kendall Gill, Troy Hudson, Jaric, Ricky Buckets, Eddie Griffin and on and on…

    Wonder whats up with Johan?
Seems to be lacking the eye of the tiger.

  9. Silvio Says:

“The Sonics need to figure out before the deadline whether they want try and win with the R&R combo, or if they want to tear it down and start over.”

That’s exactly the way I see it as well.
There are 3 ways to go:
    1. Trade young players and sourround Ray and Shard with vets that do the dirty work for them and make us a team, that can win now.
    2. Trade Ray and/or Shard and start rebuilding.
    3. Don’t do anything and hope that the young talent will be ready to help us win consistantly before Ray and Shard will be done.

Number 3 is the worst way you can go, as it get’s you arround 30 wins every season, mid to late lottery picks and keeps you stuck in mediocorcy for years to come. Though, somehow managent thinks that way is the way to go.

  10. Mr. Baker Says:

Maybe KG needs to be player/coach for a season to see what it is like with that roster.

  11. myELFboy Says:

Ergh, I just read the Seattle Times article, & I’m so sick of constantly reading, “…when they are pushing the state to address vital issues such as improving schools and roads.” The day the state decides restaurant, hotel, & rental car taxes will supplement the taxes we already pay for those things, is the day I leave this state.

  12. Scott Says:

“Maybe KG needs to be player/coach for a season to see what it is like with that roster.”

Not legal with todays CBA, but would be interesting none the less.

  13. Vinny Says:

Mired in mediocrity means no big contracts. The previous management was all for a low payroll while whining about losing money and not getting respect. I used to work at Starbucks and if I ever see my old boss is gonna happen.

Lets see what this new ownership group is gonna do. Whatever happens before Feb22 should tip their hand as to how the team will be run in the future. I hope it will not be bargain basement players surrounding 1 legit star.

  14. Vinny Says:

how come Bit@h slap is banned from the site?

  15. MC Nuggit Says:

    “Wonder whats up with Johan?”

    With youth comes inconsistency. Period.

He’s gonna be good. But it will take time.

  16. Steve Says:

“A few of the reasons KG has had so many coaches: Glen Taylor, McHale, the Joe Smith fiasco, Terrell Brandon’s career ending injury, JR Rider, Gugs, Wally Z, Kandi-man, Starbury, Cheroke Parks, Stanley Roberts, Sprewell, William Avery, Kendall Gill, Troy Hudson, Jaric, Ricky Buckets, Eddie Griffin and on and on…”

I see it as a couple of things working together. KG’s deal doesn’t exactly lend itself to putting a complete team around him without going into lux tax territory. I think some of the players you cited are decent players in their own way. T-Wolves mgmt has never been able to keep a reliable 2nd option either because of expense (can’t afford to keep guys once they hit free agency) and the cheaper option of developing within was taken away from them because of the Joe Smith situation.

So in the end it may all come back to Glen Taylor. Taylor’s original contract with KG was a major reason behind the lockout; he was one owner who kind of shot the reasonable contract for reasonable production model to hell. He was by no means the sole culprit but did make life tough for other owners who were trying to keep salaries reasonable. In his defense he probably thought he had to overpay guys to get them to play in Minnesota in the winter.

  17. Myk Says:

Im still confused…how is Garnett a coach killer?? He has basically played for 3 full time coaches and 2 interim coaches…thats pretty darn good. Ray has already played for 3 full time coaches in the last two years. Is he a coach killer???

  18. theSonicsMan Says:

He already said he didn’t mean to imply that KG was a coach killer… He even addressed it directly to you… “Myk brings up a good point. I didn’t intend to imply that KG was a coach killer. ”

KG is great. His deal has been a problem and the fact that they lost so many first rounders… But neither of those are KG’s fault. The team has been poorly managed and Casey deserved better than he got, he should have gotten atleast a year. They had a good shot of making the post season, that could have brought the team together. Now they just look pathetic.

  19. Vinny Says:

    Finally!!!
Hopefullt they can eliminate this from the game.

NBA Might Penalize Players For `Flopping’
    25th January, 2007 - 5:25 pm
    Bloomberg -
The NBA is looking into how often players simulate fouls and whether or not officials can tell the difference.

“They’re really difficult to determine in real time. They’re meant to fool an official,” Stu Jackson told reporters on Thursday. “Are we going to be wrong more times than not? It’s tough, but we’re looking at it.”

FIBA already permits referees to issue a technical foul for flopping, a penalty that Jackson said the NBA is considering. Other sports, including soccer and hockey, also allow officials to penalize players who embellish fouls.

“We have so many more plays than you do in a football or soccer game and in a more intimate environment,” said Jackson

  20. Myk Says:

Yes the post way up at the top says that is not what he meant. But then there are like 10 posts explaining why KG went through so many coaches…when in the grand scheme of things he’s been pretty consistent

  21. Myk Says:

    I almost got a Technical for flopping….in 6th grade. Even back then I was at Divac’ian levels….

  22. Steve Says:

“Yes the post way up at the top says that is not what he meant. But then there are like 10 posts explaining why KG went through so many coaches…when in the grand scheme of things he’s been pretty consistent ”

So … what’s the beef? The Cliffs Notes goes something like this:

Steve: Wow, KG has gone through a lot of coaches.

Myk: KG isn’t a coach killer.

Steve: You’re right. Instead I should have said Minnesota has gone through a lot of coaches considering they have one of the best players in the NBA.

(Various points and theories on the T-Wolves ensue)

Myk: So how does that make KG a coach killer?

SM: We’ve established he isn’t. We’re discussing reasons why the Twolves haven’t been successful.

Myk: So how does that make KG a coach killer?

    :D

  23. Myk Says:

    Ok…let me restate:

Steve: “You’re right. Instead I should have said Minnesota has gone through a lot of coaches considering they have one of the best players in the NBA. ”

How has KG gone through a lot of coaches? He has had less non-interim coaches in his career than Ray Allen has had in his short time in Seattle…

  24. Steve Says:

“How has KG gone through a lot of coaches? He has had less non-interim coaches in his career than Ray Allen has had in his short time in Seattle… ”

Jesus wept. Look, replace the words KG with Minnesota Timberwolves. You are making an inference that I didn’t intend in the first place (due to my own crappy choice of words and I acknowledged that in the second post in this thread) … my intent was to say “poor KG, how many coaches has this team gone through trying to win with him” not “Jeez KG is a coach killer.”

  25. Alex Chan Says:

Only one coach has actually been fired during the time Ray Allen has been here. The team extended an offer to Nate after the 2004-2005 season.

A firing is distinguishable from a situation where the coach decides to leave the team on his own terms by taking a more lucrative job with another team. The Timberwolves fired both Saunders and Casey. Thus, it is difficult to say that Ray Allen is really on his third coach when Nate could very well still be the coach of this team had the Sonics extended him a better offer than Portland’s offer.

  26. AK1984 Says:

The Seattle Supersonics WON’T acquire Pau Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies during the near or distant future. All things considered, Gasol wants to be traded from a bottom-feeder to a winning team rather than to another bottom-feeder.

Yes, folks, the Supersonics are a bottom-feeder—so get use to it!

Besides, that notwithstanding, the Supersonics don’t have the necessary pieces to intice Jerry West to trade Gasol to Seattle. In the end, ultimately, it’s time that y’all quit wasting your goddamn time thinking about such an asinine pipe dream.

  27. Frozenropers Says:

“Besides, that notwithstanding, the Supersonics don’t have the necessary pieces to intice Jerry West to trade Gasol to Seattle. In the end, ultimately, it’s time that y’all quit wasting your goddamn time thinking about such an asinine pipe dream.”

Gotta laugh at that coming from you AK “Mr. Out of this World Trade Creator” 1984. ;)

  28. Sam Says:

I just saw a video of Andre Brown in a High School Slam Dunk Contest. Check it out:

  29. Perfect Says:

Man, that commercial with Ridnour hitting the GW against indiana. I wonder what happened to him so that he can’t do that anymore

  30. AK1984 Says:

For those of whom who’ve been going through withdrawls, the following is an out of this world trade proposal that’s courtesy of AK1984.

    FROM DALLAS
    SG Jerry Stackhouse ($9,296,874)
    PF Austin Croshere ($7,300,000)
    PG Devin Harris ($3,153,120)

    FROM SEATTLE
    SG Ray Allen ($14,611,570)
    PF Chris Wilcox ($6,250,000)

    http://tinyurl.com/2dr4s6

Although Wilcox is a base year compensation player, the above trade proposal works under the rules and regulations of the NBA collective bargaining agreement. For Rick Sund, the reasonings behind it would be to clear salary by acquiring two players who have expiring contracts (i.e., Jerry Stackhouse and Austin Croshere) and a young, up-’n'-coming point guard (i.e., Devin Harris) who can displace Earl Watson in the starting lineup. Yet, on the other hand, the loss of both Ray Allen and Chris Wilcox would greatly hurt the franchise with regards to on-the-court production. All things considered, there are numerous pros and cons to the proposition.

In an attempt to balance out the roster after such an enormous trade, moreover, Sund should try to deal Earl Watson and Damien Wilkins to the Miami Heat for James Posey and Gary Payton. Admittedly, I’m still a huge proponent of that idea. On the whole, it’s not too much of a stretch to believe that the Supersonics could acquire both Posey and Payton at some point this season.

  31. mark in bothell Says:

trade everybody in whatever combos except ray and rashard now.and go get a stud like gasol or garnett.

  32. Silvio Says:

    AK at it again. :-)

Wouldn’t it be better to send Watson, instead of Wilcox, to the Mavs? They’d need him more than Wilcox, if they’d trade Harris.
Oh, and where are the picks we’d receive for trading one of the best players of this league?

  33. Vinny Says:

I still say we should trade Ray & Rashard for Garnett!
Can you imagine a front line of Wilcox, Swift, And KG?

  34. DK Says:

I enjoy reading all these fantasy trade proposals. But how many in here truly believe that Rick Sund is going to make a blockbuster deal by this coming trade deadline?

In just going by the wire stories on hoopshype, it seems that the only big name players that are available are Gasol, and possibly Vince Carter.

Gasol has made it clear he wants to go to a contender. And Carter would be a rent a player and most likely opt out after the season.

  35. Vinny Says:

Rick Sund said this deal is all but done.

    http://realgm.com/src_checktrade.php?tradeid=3630068

  36. Steve Says:

Well, that’s ten seconds of my life I’ll never get back …

  37. Silvio Says:

Why should the Wolves deal Garnett for Allen and Lewis?
They know we’re not doing all that well, while building our team around them, and wouldn’t deal Garnett to one of their Division rivals as well.
Also, if they deal Garnett, than they start over and don’t add the contracts of Allen and Lewis.

BTW: We’d be no better than the Wolves are currently, if we deal Allen and Shard to get him.

So this trade just makes no sense.

  38. Scott Says:

“Well, that’s ten seconds of my life I’ll never get back…”

And I only checked it because I wanted to make sure I lost ten seconds too….

  39. Menace Says:

I think you have to put a lot of the blame on the front office of the T-wolves for their downward spiral. They pretty much broke up the best team they ever had with KG/Sprewell/Cassell. Who knows whether that works today……but they had a good thing a few years back. At the same time you have to blame the attitudes of Sprewell and Cassell too. After all….Sprewell does have kids to feed.

Can’t call KG a coach killer. In fact he is a rarity in the NBA of today. You’d think that a star of his caliber would have asked for a trade a long time ago. However he remains loyal and professional to the franchise that drafted him (despite all the media fueled rumors/wants).
