Daily Roundup 4.4.07

Posted on Wednesday, April 4th, 2007 at 9:33 am by Xteve

As expected it wasn’t pretty last night but for a 12 minute garbage time stint by Big Mo Sene.

That’s not exactly true, as you can glean from the boxscore thread but it’s been so long since Mo got minutes I’m fairly dripping with joy.

Frank waxes poetic

If the Seattle SuperSonics are the Titanic, the San Antonio Spurs are the iceberg.
If the Sonics are Pompeii, the Spurs are Vesuvius.

If the Sonics … well, you get the idea.

Supes Feeling Horn-y, Danny Feeling Pain Only a Molar Could Love

Sonics coach Bob Hill said forward Danny Fortson was supposed to go to the dentist Monday for a toothache that kept him home from this two-game trip.

Fortson apparently canceled the appointment, though Hill did not know why.

Percy’s take is better

While explaining why a toothache prevented Fortson from joining the team on its two-day trip to San Antonio and Oklahoma City, Hill managed to keep a straight face for 18 seconds before bursting into laughter.

“I heard that they didn’t want him to fly because if it were an abscess then it might have burst in the air because of the pressure,” Hill said before doubling over laughing. “That’s the truth. That’s what I heard. … Can we talk about something else?”

Hill said Fortson was scheduled to visit a dentist on Tuesday but missed the appointment.

Thanks for the image of the exploding abscess in my head….like something out of Gremlins

And if that wasn’t disturbing enough for you, sounds like Lenny Wilkens is the man in charge for the time being.

Wilkens said he’ll also meet with Bennett in the afternoon. Wilkens declined to describe the nature of the meeting, but he didn’t anticipate any long-term decisions will be made today.

“After the season, we’ll sit down and talk more about those types of things,” Wilkens said.

When asked if a decision on coach Bob Hill, who is in the final year of his contract, will be decided immediately after the season, Wilkens said: “From top to bottom everything will be decided. Immediately.”

That includes Rashard Lewis, who can opt out of his deal in the offseason and is line for a maximum-level contract. He’s likely to draw plenty of attention from the ownership group at the morning meeting.

Board meeting today to determine Hill’s future

Speaker of the House, bought and paid for SEIU tool (check his donations on the State website) and arrogant nitwit Frank Chopp is on a one man crusade to prevent an arena vote from going to King County. I think you should let him know how you feel. This is the very epitome of Washingtonian leadership. Apparently Frank has anointed himself “the decider” for the rest of Washington. Mo Sene delivered a leather sandwhich last night - and it was all ball!

He should be playing so much more. And the 4th quarter was by far the most interesting part of last nights game (except for Wilcox showing that he can be close to a dominant inside scorer against a great defensive team).

  2. AK1984 Says:

With Clay Bennett in charge, the Seattle Supersonics have become a shoddy, second-rate organization. Distressingly, it’s times like these that I’d almost rather be a fan of the Portland Trailblazers.

From Bennett all the way down to Danny Fortson — with Lenny Wilkens, Rick Sund, and Bob Hill lodged in there somewhere, too — this franchise is filled with a bunch of blockheaded clods.

At any rate, though, several of y’all have probably creamed yourselves over Mouhamed Sene’s somewhat tolerable performance against scrubs like Jackie Butler last night. That, dismayingly, is the only unobjectionable thing that I can currently think about regarding the Supersonics.

  3. jjdjejvj Says:

Calm down AK, in the midst of all this transition things are going to take some time. With Bennett in charge I bet you $1 the Supes win 43 games next year; a respectable improvement. And I bet it happens in Seattle.

No, I am not on drugs.

  4. Brian Robinson Says:

Clay Bennet has not put his stamp on this organization in any way. In 60 days we’ll have to revisit this conversation.

    Hilariously ignorant.

Who agreed to the contract extensions for Nick Collison and Luke Ridnour earlier this season?

As far as I can recall, at least one of y’all claimed that it was Clay Bennett’s decision to re-sign both of them.

    Hilariously ignorant.

Okay, practically my entire rant was a bunch of exaggerated hyperbole. Yet, regardless of my excessive sensationalism, there’s still a legitimate reason to be concerned about the state of the Seattle Supersonics.

I, however, could be needlessly overreacting about the whole situation—there’s no denyin’ it!

    - Wow the crazy stuff is coming from all angles today. You seriously aren’t going to make a claim like this based on the sample size of the decisions he has made are you??

  8. Moffet Says:

Dude. What’s exaggerated hyperbole? When is overreacting ever needful? You can’t possibly talk like you write. Try your own voice on for size, please!

  9. Vinny Says:

All things considered, I think Sene looked pretty good last night. You could tell he has been working on that face up from the left side of the key. I think that is a great move releasing the ball like that from way over the top of his head. He had somewhat of an inside presence on the defensive end, blocking a couple of shots and at least making opposing players think about him being there.

  10. Myk Says:

    - If…and this is the biggest if…Sene gets time to develop I am relatively certain he would turn out to be a better post player than Petro will be…more reason IMO to trade Petro

  11. Vinny Says:

I think it hurts but in the long run I think the best front court we can keep is Swift / Wilcox starting and Sene / Petro backups. And if we can keep Lewis / Jelly as backup then - weed b gud.

  12. AK1984 Says:

Dude. What’s exaggerated hyperbole? When is overreacting ever needful? You can’t possibly talk like you write. Try your own voice on for size, please!

Well, Moffet, I write and talk in a pretty similar fashion. The main difference, however, is that I tend to swear more often while talking to someone.

Indeed, I’m an obnoxious blowhard in numerous ways.

Wow the crazy stuff is coming from all angles today. You seriously aren’t going to make a claim like this based on the sample size of the decisions he has made are you??

No, Myk, I was just joshing about turning my back on the Seattle Supersonics. Yet, as it is, the only way that I’d ever switch allegiances from the Supersonics to the Portland Trailblazers is if the team relocated elsewhere.

That isn’t a far-fetched possibility, though, which alarms me.

  13. Perfect Says:

Saying you’d keep Swift over Collison… bold

I’m baffled as to why Sene hasn’t been getting more minutes like that. The season has already been admittedly given up on, and Sene is developing at an exponential rate. Just give the kid some minutes, pleeease. It’s painful watching him sitting on the bench.

  14. AK1984 Says:

Even though the following comments will make me seem like a contemptuous jackass, I still think that it should be noted that Mouhamed Sene (Player Efficiency Rating :+7.3; Net Efficiency Rating: -14.1; Net Points Per 100 Possessions: -8.3) is too raw offensively and Johan Petro (Opponent Efficiency Rating :+23.4; Net Efficiency Rating: -10.0; Net Points Per 100 Possessions: -5.7) is too raw defensively for them to make a positive impact.

As a result of Petro and Sene’s obvious deficiencies, they should both be traded during the upcoming off-season.

Although I don’t necessarily agree with the extensions of Luke and Nick…….I don’t mind an owner who isn’t afraid to spend money. That is a refreshing change from most owners, Paul Allen exclude, in this area.

My friend works in sales for the Sonics. Every year they go to an NBA sales conference. Under Shultz they would always fly commercial. Once Bennett took over he said screw that, and chartered flights for the supes staff. Bennett doesn’t seem to skimp on the small stuff. I can’t fault him for that.

    RE: Sene

Did anyone see him crash to the floor after the missed dunk vs Memphis last friday? He had a wide open dunk, got fouled, hung on the rim and landed on his back. May have been one of the funniest/clumsiest things I’ve ever seen.

For a big man he runs well……but he is still pretty corky if you ask me. He has showed me some things as of late. I’m easily impressed by anything he does though. Here is to jumping off the correct foot! Boo ya.

It’s more agonizing and excruciating to watch Mouhamed Sene erratically flail around on the court than it is to see him peacefully sit on the bench.

  17. Vinny Says:

Yeah that is twice lately that Sene has crashed to the floor in a violent manner.

I hope he stops doing that.

Aside from any derogatory pejoratives concerning Howard Schultz, I’d like to commend Clay Bennett for not being a stingy tightwad toward his employees.

With regards to players’ salaries, however, frugality and parsimony are two beneficial qualities for an owner to exude in this case. Undoubtedly, it’s an entirely different matter between the basketball operations department and the sales department.

We should all be aware of that, though.

  19. Menace Says:

Has Sene become the new Steve Sheffler? Sideshow Sene?

    Apparently, that’s the case.

  22. Menace Says:

There was a nice “Sene…Sene” chant at the end of the Memphis game.

  23. EJlover Says:

Menace, do you remember Vlade’s dunk in his rookie season where he did a flip and landed on his head. I think that one beats out Sene’s in terms off clumsiness. Though I think Sene’s head hit the floor harder than Vlade’s did. Or, maybe that was the beginning of the mental issues Vlade developed…

    Ahhh yes.

I can only imagine him doing the same thing now…..but on a snowboard. Then getting up……shrugging his shoulders…..and continuing to not care about anything.

Nobody can hate on Vladimir “The Space Cadet” Radmanovic.

Besides, as a good-for-nothing idler myself, I appreciate the apathetic laziness of Vladi’ Radman’.

  27. EJlover Says:

Actually I think he did do the same thing while snowboarding, then he lied about it. Haha.

  28. Dick Tate Says:

You’re really going out on a limb there. :)
