2. Alex Quante Says:

The effort is in Tacoma, also:

3. Spirit of '79 Says:

Do people pay attention to letters to the editor, or to Seattle/Washington pols, from places like Colorado, or Ohio, or North Carolina?

4. Matthew Says:

Excellent! Going to donate as much as I can come next pay day. It would be great to get the necessary signatures ASAP!

5. Yoon Says:

As soon as you get your Paypal account up and running, you can expect a $30 donation from me (and possibly more in the future).

Let’s get this done!

6. Ted Z Says:

Brian,

Much thanks go out to you and your cohorts. I’m hoping that an update to the Save our Sonics website is coming, and please, reiterate what you’ve said about local business leaders and legislature being met with an “unsupervised answering machine” to the media at large as the initiative is being rolled out this week. I think that’s the most important piece that people haven’t been hearing. Bennett is clearly stonewalling legitimate efforts from local leaders that are trying to keep the team here. Sounds like a breach of contract to me. Where’s the good faith effort?

7. Balloholic Says:

Apparently Kiro 710 will be / is discussing this issue on this morning’s show. Can’t remember the host’s name.

8. Shawn Says:

One of my dreams is to come to Seattle to see the Sonics. Really don’t want to see them go ! (OK City is probably the last place a french guy wants to go to)

I will try to give you some money

9. DL Baller Says:

Great news on the initiative! Don’t underestimate the heart of a true Seattle Supersonics fan! You can expect my donation soon. Anxious to see how the roster plays out the rest of the summer. I keep thinking about Brian’s subtle hint about Wally SZ being moved. Would have to be part of a bigger move. Also, don’t count out Ridnour. I want him in a Sonic uniform. He will prove to be a winner!

10. fxyik Says:

This is a great effort. Thank you Brian and whoever is volunteering. I will definitely donate once the Paypal account is up.

11. dave Says:

Is there a dollar amount goal that we are going for? Also is there a snail mail address that money can be sent to? No matter what you can count on some $ on my part. Think of this people:
2 seats to see Durant and the Sonics (semi nose-bleed): $50

If you’re willing to pay for a single game next season its on you to counteract that money going into Bennetts pocket and make a stand about keeping the team here. One dollar now will be could be worth millions to that bastard, so do your part!

12. Myk Says:

- Is there a mailing address to send funds?

13. Sam K Says:

Beautiful work Brian. Sadly, you are our last line of defense. I’ll chip in at least 20 bucks ASAP.

14. Scott Says:

Looking at a previous post re: snail mail address I found this section.

“for information on how to donate contact donate@adealisadeal.org.”

I’m assuming that by sending an email there they will send a physical address.

15. versio Says:

Yes, please get that paypal account up!

16. phenom Says:

I doubt Durant wants to fail at keeping the Sonics in Seattle. The Chosen 1 should’nt allow such a disaster to occur, which would subsequently taint his career and legacy forever.

Durant = The Instructor ???

17. Zeppe Says:

Did anyone listen to the KIRO show? If so, how did it go?

18. Denise/StormStlkr Says:

19. Donald Says:

Hey guys I think what you are doing is great… Is there anyway to put up like some sort of counter on the ammount of funds raised? Kind of like a telethon? As a former Sales Manager I know that people tend to pay attention to numbers, and if they see there money making the count rise they are more likely to donate as opposed to just donating the money, just a thought and goodluck!

20. taro Says:

I really appreciate the effort here…it would be a HUGE blow to lose this franchise 3 years before the next NBA dynasty.

I’d also suggest contacting:

USSMARINER.COM

LOOKOUTLANDING.COM

DETECTOVISION.COM

We can get some of the local Mariner fans involved in this.

Hey will there be an official email sent out? I’d like to forward it to everyone I know. I coud easily send the info out…..but it would look more official coming from SOS.

24. Menace Says:

Hey will there be an official email sent out? I’d like to forward it to everyone I know. I coud easily send the info out…..but it would look more official coming from SOS.

25. EJ Says:

Totally agree with Taro. We need to get the other sports fans of Seattle on our side. It was a bit tricky dealing with the bandwagon fans when asking for support of tax money, but this shouldn’t be the case here. We need to hit M’s games, Storm games (that should be easy), as well as Hawks games. My work schedule doesn’t allow me to donate too much time volunteering. But whatever I can do, I’m all yours. Denise, I’ll contact you asap. And as soon as you guys got the paypal stuff working, I’m making whatever donation I can afford. Great stuff guys.

This is what I’ve been waiting to see ever since this thing started. To me the biggest thing to come from this besides potentially forcing the lease to be honored, is that this shows the league and the country that there is interest in Seattle. That this isn’t a case of a team moving because they aren’t wanted anymore. Clay Bennett is trying his best to make it look that way. We cannot let him make bold faced lies about us that way! Let’s do this.

26. Denise/StormStlkr Says:

menace - make sure I have your email address - as I will get a full email out tonight when I get home asking for help from folks

thank you - volunteers@saveoursonics.org comes directly to me and too my personal email is saveoursonics_storm@mac.com -

27. JonSunvold Says:

You guys watching the game.

Durant looks amazing!

I question his ability to be a two guard–he’s not exactly guard quick, but he’s a fantastic small forward. That spin move/jump hook will be unstoppable.

His arm length … exciting

28. SOOPRSONICK DAAd Says:

The NBA is on it’s knees a little right now, this might just work in our favor as Sonic fans? The league is going to want to appear strong. Letting a 40 year franchise walk to a small market truck-stop won’t cut it.

29. Otto Says:

Will donate soon.

Thanks for the update

30. Denise/StormStlkr Says:

just as an FYI on donations:

31. Sonicsman Says:

Hey Brian, you should email this article to David Locke, I am sure he would put it up on his blog and help get the word out!!

32. mrcysco Says:

Just made a donation via paypal. Just wish I still lived in Seattle so I could volunteer. Just remember, Dallas has your back!

-=cysco

33. Ny Sonicsfan Says:

I just withdrew all of my money from paypal, but will put some more funds in and donate next week. Great job guys!

Anyone see the poll at nba.com for most impressive performance during the State Farm Challenge?

1. Kobe 56%
2. Durant 22%
3. Lebron 9%

effin Kobe…

34. Brian Robinson Says:

Locke got the press release and has my number.

I believe that he’s in a tight spot. He is still techincally under contract with the team as he had a 2 year deal so I am pretty sure that they can forbid him to participate directly in something like this unless he’s willing to fork over a paycheck. I don’t see that happening and don’t blame him at all. He has a family and a career.

I’m not certain about that but its a guess. My gut tells me David would be more vocal if he could be and I do know it was a 2 year deal. There are a lot of potentially big participants in this who are conflicted out.

35. Sonicsman Says:

Very Good Point, I never thought of that and I know Locke is a quiet supporter because of his contract but will be a loud voice when his contract is up!!!

36. Zeppe Says:

So nobody listened to the KIRO show? I guess I was interested if there was any interesting/constructive discussion on a non-sports talk radio show. I was hoping there wasn’t just a bunch of “just let them leave,” talk from KIRO listeners.

37. Brian Robinson Says:

All the SOS core are starting to put their money in. I’m starting the ante at $200 personally and keep in mind I’ve got hundreds of hours and a couple grand donated already.

I love the $20 donations guys but really think about whether you can put money with some more zeros behind it. If you know people who have businesses who benefit even secondhand isn’t it worth getting together and pitching in something?

38. Brian Robinson Says:

I was on 6 different radio shows today and listened to only about 3 minutes of discussion outside of that. I also am very curious regarding how the discussion went.

I think we’re making a dent on this thing PR wise, but have been too busy to notice.

39. Sonicsman Says:

I put bulletin post on myspace to get the word out. Anyone with myspace should do the same. Lets get the word out!!!!

40. AK1984 Says:

All the SOS core are starting to put their money in. I’m starting the ante at $200 personally and keep in mind I’ve got hundreds of hours and a couple grand donated already.

Okay, anyone who’s donated some cash to A Deal Is A Deal better hope that their financial contribution isn’t all for naught; otherwise, it’ll’ve been an impetuous use of money.

“I love the $20 donations guys but really think about whether you can put money with some more zeros behind it. If you know people who have businesses who benefit even secondhand isn’t it worth getting together and pitching in something?”

Look, I don’t have a problem with folks charitably funding the aforementioned organization — in fact, it’s not my right to intrude on anybody’s monetary endeavors — however, this kind of overzealousness leaves me a bit squeamish on the inside. In this instance, I flat-out advise against using pushy tactics in an attempt to garner handouts.

41. epx Says:

I don’t mind Brian, and thanks again for your efforts. People need to guage how much it’s worth to them personally, and how much they’re willing to contribute. U understand more than anyone how much it’s gonna take monetarily, and also how much effort will need to be put in, so I don’t mind the encouragement to contribute time, or money at all, as I see the big picture, and hope the team will stay(bottom line). I’m still guaging what I myself can do, but I definitely don’t mind the encouragement to do as much as I can. Thanks again Brian, and stay positive regardless.

42. René Says:

I´ll just want you to know, that I´ll follow Shawn from France in what he posted. I´ve never been in Seattle too and I never was able to see a Sonics game live in the KeyArena - and movíng the team would kill my dreams and my inspiration brought to the Sonics and the town of Seattle.

43. Shawn Says:

Just made a donation, hope it will help !

44. James B. Says:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/basketball/325145_arena26.html

Check out this link for more media coverage of Brian and the proposal. It looks like Nickels will be supportive of our efforts now.

45. bj quimba Says:

I wouldn’t call these tactics pushy… in fact, it’s been persuasive, but absolutely first-class in my opinion.
Brian took the surprising yet strategic step of including Van Dyke in the ground swell. Van Dyke’s comments have been just as persuasive because, well, he has been considered part of the problem. The genius of finding middle ground with him and going public would have been lost on almost all of us! VERY nice move.

it is what it is: a great idea. Haven’t we seen enough of Brian’s leadership and vision to give us confidence that the first and only time he has solicited money is for a good reason?

AK, what does he have to prove to you for your whole-hearted support?

Your caution of a donation being an “impetuous use of money” (wouldn’t “misguided” be the better word for your argument, by the way) if Deal is a Deal is “all for naught,” my response is:

The reward is far greater than a $20 (or more) risk.

46. dave Says:

CONGRATS BRIAN!!! You’re cover story (on internet version) of the PI, this is great press and just wanted to throw you a shout-out, well done. You beat everyone to the media and get the props you deserve. The revolution is underway people.

47. FrodoTO Says:

The PI’s article was shockingly positive (for them). They even talked to a business owner who fears losing the Sonics!

I made my donation last night. Given the tone of Nickels quote in the PI, ADIAD is already improving the situation.

48. Call it like Calabro Says:

This is the kind of idiocy that we are up against.

A quote from the PI soundoff:
“I doubt there will be a void. Ms. Mains and other business owners in the area will likely survive after all, the Sonics home schedule accounts for only 11% of the days in a year.”

I myself have been involved in business for 20 yrs. The fact that these people seem to think that 11% of the days in a year equates to 11% of your profits for the year is ABSOLUTELY INSANE!!!!!!!!That kind of sentiment is absolutelt pathetic and perhaps as shortsighted and ignorant as anything I’ve heard on the matter.
I can personally tell you that I have seen many a business that have made 50% or more of their profits for the year in 5-10% of the days in a year. This is something that HAS to be conveyed to the people deciding the fates of business ownwers in Lower Queen Anne and surounding areas. The signature gatherers and press releases should highlight this point /fact.

I have yet to see the lost revenue issue put in those terms publicly. It is very important that the people recognize this fact IMO.

49. Myk Says:

Ummm Calabro…if you are going to cherry pick statements from the PI Forum how can you not take the one that talks about how Seattle was just fine 40 years ago without a team…that one made me laugh the most.

Our biggest problem in this city is that many people seem to think that we are still living in 1967…I just want to know what happened to all the hippies

50. Dork1013 Says:

Don’t worry Myk, the hippies are still here. They all live in Frank Chops district and voted for I-91. If I have offended anyone in Frank Chops district by my statement I would like to not appoligize for it now.

51. mark in bothell Says:

great editorial in PI this morning by seattle attorney Chi-Dooh Li.
email is:cli@elmlaw.com. email him w/ encouragement. This is stuff we need to keep this ball rolling.
Great job Brian.Im down to help.
Ive always thoght we need to get mariner/hawk fans involved.
how about an emotional SAVE OUR SONICS!! cheer at a hawk or mariner game? lot of bang for the buck it would seem.
way to go everyone!!

52. Dork1013 Says:

*apologize

53. K-man Says:

AK-

If you don’t support this, fine. But please don’t come on this site & discourage contibutions- especially if you want the Sonics to stay.

54. Scott Says:

“If I have offended anyone in Frank Chops district by my statement I would like to not appoligize for it now.”

Hey I live in Frank Chopp’s district……

“I myself have been involved in business for 20 yrs. The fact that these people seem to think that 11% of the days in a year equates to 11% of your profits for the year is ABSOLUTELY INSANE!!!!!!!!”

Are you trying to say there’s a difference between fixed and variable costs….blasphamy:)

55. GP are you wit'me? Says:

God freaking damn it..
people on PI are ridiculous.

Thank god we have this place for a change of tune….

56. Menace Says:

Just say no to the PI. Its not worth it. I realized that after everytime I’ve gone there, I’ve wanted to punch myself in the face. I can do that whenever. No reason to waste time reading dribble.

57. Call it like Calabro Says:

Myk-

I think the term to ‘cherry pick’ statements somewhat implies that I am taking things out of context. I certainly dont mean to. Just trying to point out some of the more blatant mistruths and poor assumptions.

58. chncasper Says:

I hate to be negative about things in the initiative again, but does the intent of the initiative shoot itself in the foot in the sense that KeyArena cannot be renovated between 2008 and 2010 due to the fact that 41 games have to be played there? This could scare off local investors.

59. Steve Says:

“Just say no to the PI. Its not worth it. I realized that after everytime I’ve gone there, I’ve wanted to punch myself in the face. I can do that whenever. No reason to waste time reading dribble. ”

Menace is right … I found for the most part the soundoffs are rife with ignorant mouthbreathers who live in their own little Seattle-centric dreamworld.

60. chncasper Says:

“Are you trying to say there’s a difference between fixed and variable costs….blasphamy:) ”

Scott, if there is going to be a day in court, your Econ background will probably qualify you as an expert witness for SOS.

61. jjdjvjej Says:

Can anyone else get the URL donate@adealisadeal.org to work?

I cannot.

62. Myk Says:

Myk-

I think the term to ‘cherry pick’ statements somewhat implies that I am taking things out of context. I certainly dont mean to. Just trying to point out some of the more blatant mistruths and poor assumptions.

- Sorry is “spotlight completely ignorant statements” better than cherry pick? Trust me I wasn’t calling you out…I just found it insane someone would say that things were fine 40 years ago as a reasonable argument. Does that mean we shouldn’t try to keep Microsoft around either??

63. Ninja Jordan Says:

I don’t understand how a Seattle resident can actually WANT the Sonics to leave. It seems like I read a lot of that on the PI Soundoffs. i.e., “bye bye sonics,” “I can’t wait for them to leave” etc. I understand not wanting a tax raise to fund an arena, but actually WANTING them to leave? It’s either a hatred of pro sports altogether, or just trolling.

64. Myk Says:

Scott, if there is going to be a day in court, your Econ background will probably qualify you as an expert witness for SOS.

- I had some of my most comfortable naps during Econ classes while streched out in Kane Hall…can I be an expert too??

65. Balloholic Says:

“I had some of my most comfortable naps during Econ classes while streched out in Kane Hall…can I be an expert too?? ”

They don’t have upper-level Econ classes for the 500 students it takes to fill Kane Hall. So no, you can’t play expert.

66. seattle_brett Says:

Sorry this is a little bit off-topic, but i thought everyone would enjoy this article. http://www.nba.com/usabasketball/durantusa_072207.html

This is a very good article on Kevin Durant’s performance with Team USA.

67. Scott Says:

“Scott, if there is going to be a day in court, your Econ background will probably qualify you as an expert witness for SOS.”

The key is to know just enough to be scary…thats me;)

Actually if we had to bring in an expert witness I’d recommend the guy who wrote the original Key Arena Economic Impact Assessment. Besides being spouted by CFMIT, the conclusions which are made actually support the position of redoing the arena.

I just loved the part pulled out about the 11% of the days theory. How well do you think downtown retailers would do if Christmas was outlawed in the state, without any kind of replacement, and instead they all got average July sales days? I’m pretty sure you’d see a lot of changes in the area.

68. AK1984 Says:

If you don’t support this, fine. But please don’t come on this site & discourage contibutions- especially if you want the Sonics to stay.

As it is, I’m ambivalent toward A Deal Is A Deal. I, however, was miffed about Brian’s apparent disfavor toward donations of $20. All things considered, he should be pleased with any amount of money that the aforementioned organization recieves from each of its benefactors.

69. jjdjvjej Says:

I’m a hippie, love basketball, did not vote for I-91, and will fight to keep this franchise here till the very end.

This defense of hippies has not been endorsed by anyone, and is brought to you by me.

70. Crow Says:

chncasper raises a question that the press conference should be ready for

71. Dick Tate Says:

This defense of hippies has not been endorsed by anyone, and is brought to you by me.
You and your four Johnsons? ;)

72. Call it like Calabro Says:

It would be nice if Brian could you try and plug the ‘11% of the days theory’ at the press conference. I know its just a stupid blogger from the PI’s opinion but one that is likely shared with others. The simplicity of this economic theory should be mentioned so as everyone knows that 11% of the days can add up to a huge % of yearly profit. People should know this when deciding what kind of impact goes along with a lease sellout.

This is truly the key point in a sellout situation. What exactly is the dollar amount impact on local business if the teams arent there for those days? And how do they divvy it up?

73. Frozenropers Says:

Are you trying to say there’s a difference between fixed and variable costs….blasphamy:)

Even more specifically, I think the issue is the “seasonal revenue streams”, where the businesses generate x% (large percentage) of their revenues on those 41 days there are home games. ;o)

74. Menace Says:

“How well do you think downtown retailers would do if Christmas was outlawed in the state”

Careful what you ask for. Remember all the hubbub about X-mas decorations at Sea-Tac last year. Now they can’t have any holiday related decorations. Definitely blame the hippies for this.

75. Myk Says:

Does it really take an economics expert to understand that making it less appearling for 600,000 people to enter your business area is not a good thing??

Maybe that shocking revelation just floated into my brain during one of those naps…

76. Otto Says:

With Brian trying to keep the sonics to stay at key arena, hopefully that convinces many businesses in Queen Anne to rise in support of this group.

77. Matthew Says:

How is any sports team a civic asset? How does it bring a city together, or instill a sense of civic pride?

The traffic jams caused by sporting events cause emergency responders to not get to emergencies on time. Our sports teams directly lead to the deaths of 2-3 people per event on average.

Perhaps sports teams should get the blood off of their hands before they beat their chests and proudly declare their worth.

Wow! The PI is full of types like this! This was taken from SoundOff of the Chi-Dooh Li article.

Its a GREAT letter.

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/325077_skip26.html

78. Scott Says:

“The traffic jams caused by sporting events cause emergency responders to not get to emergencies on time. Our sports teams directly lead to the deaths of 2-3 people per event on average.”

Holy crap????? 244 people a year may die in Seattle because of the Mariners home games?

Ain’t this one of those questions where you’d love to just sit there and pepper the writer with questions like ‘prove it?’

79. Moffet Says:

Sounds like a better argument for light rail to me

80. Matthew Says:

Yeah, you gotta love the people coming to conclusion that Pro Sports DIRECTLY kill people …as if nothing but that causes traffic jams. The 4th of July and New Years cause traffic jams downtown, better stop celebrating those.

Anybody care to tell me the proper “code” for Bold, Italics and URLs?

81. Alex Quante Says:

Matthew: You just have to do them with HTML tags (i.e. enclose your I for Italics inside of greater than and less than symbols and do the same for your /i)

82. Alex Quante Says:

Oh and URL’s in HTML are done with the A HREF tag. So instead of and it’s A HREF=”http://whatever.com” and /A enclosed in those greater than and less than symbols.

83. Matthew Says:

Thank YOU

Test

84. Steve Says:

“The traffic jams caused by sporting events cause emergency responders to not get to emergencies on time. Our sports teams directly lead to the deaths of 2-3 people per event on average.”

What a truly pathetic comment that is.

85. Otto Says:

I went and ahead and asked him to give some facts to try and support his stance.

86. Steve Says:

“As it is, I’m ambivalent toward A Deal Is A Deal. I, however, was miffed about Brian’s apparent disfavor toward donations of $20. All things considered, he should be pleased with any amount of money that the aforementioned organization recieves from each of its benefactors. ”

Have you donated? Just wondering… since you don’t seem to have any problem using this site to attract attention to yourself. I would have thought that at least would be worth something to you.

87. dave Says:

What about all the people that drown in the bathtub every year!!??!? Now THERE is a problem, I say the solution is ban running water as well as any container that can hold enough water to drown in. Please people, imagine all the lives this could save, lets bring this to the attention of everyone nation wide:
BAN BOWLS AND WATER! BAN BOWLS AND WATER!

88. Myk Says:

Wow…just wow…i want to live in their world for just one day and see how surreal everything is. Who needs drugs or alcohol when you are that far off the deep end??

What about all the people that drown in the bathtub every year!!??!? Now THERE is a problem, I say the solution is ban running water as well as any container that can hold enough water to drown in. Please people, imagine all the lives this could save, lets bring this to the attention of everyone nation wide:
BAN BOWLS AND WATER! BAN BOWLS AND WATER!

- Actually…I’d actually ask people to think of all the people who have been injured by being struck by emergency vehicles…that is the true travesty. If I have my way I will ban all emergency vehicles due to the increased risk to the pedestrians around the city…people who are injured will just need to find their way to the hospital. Of course, we’ll have to outlaw busses too…so….

I really think it’s an issue of race, and culture to some of these people writing those ridiculous “counterarguments” in the paper, or anywhere else regarding the Sonics staying.

The fact of the matter is that bars, strip clubs, night clubs, Seahawks games, Mariners Games, the Opera, Plays, Musicals, Concerts could all lead to deaths directly, or indirectly(drunk driving), as well as all other kinds of nuissances, so why isolate the Sonics for their enmity?

The Sonics are my MAIN source of entertainment. Don’t I have as much right to that as they have to their entertainment? I’m probably paying taxes for things that benefit many different people in the community, that I know nothing about, so I think those naysayers should shut their trap, bcuz if we’re not paying for this, or being annoyed by this, then we’ll be paying for something else anyway, and will probably be complaining about that instead.

91. Myk Says:

“As it is, I’m ambivalent toward A Deal Is A Deal. I, however, was miffed about Brian’s apparent disfavor toward donations of $20. All things considered, he should be pleased with any amount of money that the aforementioned organization recieves from each of its benefactors. ”

Have you donated? Just wondering… since you don’t seem to have any problem using this site to attract attention to yourself. I would have thought that at least would be worth something to you.

- I have to admit that I would have worded it differently than AK, but I do agree with his premise that if people are making a donation they are probably making a donation they feel is right for the cause and right for thier monetary situation. Therefore, lets not just push away someone who might think that even $20 would not be appreciated.

If the Seattle Supersonics became a publicly owned company (e.g., the Green Bay Packers), then I’d invest some money in the franchise by becoming a stockowner/shareholder; otherwise, the only cash that I’ll spend either directly or indirectly toward the organization will be on tickets and sports memorabilia.

- Everything you just said is a very “reasonable” argument that most “reasonable” people would look at and understand. However, people who think that we should return to 1967 Seattle, believe that a sporting event causes 2-3 deaths a year and believe that losing 600,000 potential customers will not hurt a business should not and cannot be considered “reasonable”…this is the biggest issue with the whole debate

So you’ll put money into things that will beneifit Clay Bennett, but not SOS????

Dude, K-man, everyone pays for goods and services in which the money they spent is either directly or indirectly pocketed by loathsome schmucks such as Clayton Bennett.

That’s a part of life, so deal with it.

96. Call it like Calabro Says:

I guess all the economic impact talk is debatable until someone can compare the revenues generated during the 42 dates the Sonics play vs the avg daily revenues.

But assuming that those 42 dates are higher than average, imagine any business anywhere having 42 days of higher than average sales stripped from them as after they signed a lease basically guaranteeing higher than average sales on those said dates. A tough pill to swallow to say the least. Especially when its at the hands of a rich out of towner.

There are different degrees of “the ask”

I don’t like asking for donations. It’s not something that comes easily to me nor something that I enjoy. That said there are times to be more aggressive and this is one of them. Through this all I have gotten to the point where I certainly don’t feel guilty about any of it. I’ve spent more on gas driving to meetings than the average person has donated and not to be pissy or self righteous but that gives me some sense that I’m entitled to ask.

That said I do not mean to imply that I do not appreciate $20 donations. Anything we get is great. Its just that sometimes peoiple don’t think that “Gee, I just spent $150 at the restaurant last night but I can only get myself to donate 1/10 of that to this important cause.”

Not to try and turn this into a thread about the depressing downsides of modern society, but I couldn’t agree more.

Sonic support is Sonic support, whether it’s buying a ticket, buying a jersey or donating $20. It all helps.

Orlando Magic selected HOK to design their new arena, same as Bennett. Interesting that fundamentally it looks a lot like the sketch that Bennett presented- oval arena and a largely separate wing entry and space for multiple commercial uses. http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/basketball/magic/The finish is different. I have to wonder how much HOK actually did on unique Seattle specific architectural design.

Vote on Orlando arena still a few hours away but morning news made it seem like it had pretty good chance to make it. Stream of Magic payments (not discounted, which would lower the value some) estimated at about 30% of initial construction cost (not dealing with the interest).

Regarding SonicsCentral, Save Our Sonics, and A Deal Is A Deal, Brian R., you’ve done everything at your own volition. Yet, despite the fact that I appreciate your efforts, you shouldn’t hold the rest of us to such lofty standards. All in all, folks are frequently turned off by that kind of haughty attitude.

That said I do not mean to imply that I do not appreciate $20 donations. Anything we get is great. Its just that sometimes peoiple don’t think that “Gee, I just spent $150 at the restaurant last night but I can only get myself to donate 1/10 of that to this important cause.”

Here’s an example. SInce you use half of the big words on this site I want you to start paying for half of the hosting fees. If you want to entertain yourself on my dime while at the same time calling me pushy then fine, thats the way it is.

Think about whether you want to continue posting. If you want to just be an ass all the time and think you can fall back on “it is my nature to be an ass” that doesn’t always work. If not go somewhere else and annoy them.

Send me a mail and I’ll send you an amount. Half the hosting fee.

110. Sonicsman Says:

Mr. AK1984,

I think you are totally out of line. Why you would want to start an argument at a time when Mr. Robinson has spent his own time and resources for a team we all love is beyond me. I think it takes a pretty small man to call him out when he is asking for a few bucks from fans to save a mulit-million dollar franchise from leaving. Mr. Bennett has more than enough money and resources to do what he wants with ease. MR. Robinson is not match financially for Mr. Bennett so he has to fight hard. I kind of see it as David and Goliath!! Anyway, stop being such a prick and join in on the efforts. If you are not part of the solution then get lost!!!

111. Alex Chan Says:

AK, you may have finally bit off more than you can chew. Brian, I think you should lower AK’s fee for any trade proposal he can generate for former All-American Steve Logan.

112. Sonicsman Says:

Hey Brian,

Can you post some details about the press conference today? I am from out of state and have been surfing the Seattle Media pages but haven’t seen anything.

P.S. The P-I Article was great!!

113. Ted Z Says:

Has KJR embargoed all A Deal is a Deal coverage? I’ve listened through most of the day and I haven’t heard word one, though I’ve heard plenty in the past few days leading up. I was surprised enough not to hear any audio from the press conference, but it’s as if they’re pretending it never happened. Almost zero discussion of the Sonics at all today. It sounds as if Ian and Elise, who usually talk the most Sonics of all the hosts, are going to be talking football all evening. Something is fishy.

119. montanasupesfan Says:

Look- I don’t often post, but I read the site all day long.

120. Alex Chan Says:

The NBA ref controvery is being covered more by the mainstream media. It is not getting much coverage from the NBA blogosphere with the exception of sensitive Spurs fans. The Vick story is big but I question the extent to which it can really serve as a topic of conversation for non-lawyers.

121. Sonicsman Says:

Your love for the Sonics in my mind is non-existent if you come on this site or any site and totally try and downplay and destroy and effort to save the team you love!! If you can’t financially help then fine, at least be a support on the page. Of course the media doesn’t find this to be top news, that is why it talks about spreading the word and making our voices heard. That is what makes this such a tough fight. We have enough negative people out there so don’t be one of them. We have to show unity or people won’t take it seriously!! You are either on in or you are out!! Don’t ride the fence!

122. SonicComic Says:

“I truly think that Brian ought to be respectful of everyone’s financial status and personal budgets. Instead of acting dissatisfied with a $20 donation that somebody has made to A Deal Is A Deal, he should be gratefully appreciative of their contribution.”

AK, Sir.
I’d like to put aside my usual dopey moronic posts for a moment. Although you seem to be pretty intelligent young man, there are things you can learn from this forum. I watch the Sonic games and love my team but a few years back I didn’t even know what “weak side help” meant. I wanted to be a more intelligent fan rather than just chanting “rah-rah-go-Sonics”. Forums have taught me an infinite amount about the Sonics and basketball. In fact I have learned some things that came directly from you. It is my guess that later on in life you will learn about your now misconception of what Brian is doing. Today you may think he is a pushy guy asking for money. In time you will realize he is a stand up guy, someone who steps up to the plate in what he believes in. And that is a lot nobler than most men. Although I actually understand where your heart is in where you are coming from in your comments, I suggest that you pause for a moment and think about what intelligent posters are putting forth in their response to you. You know who they are as you have been in this forum much longer that I. Although you may not understand what Brian is doing now, my suggestion for you is to simply hold your tongue at this time. When it comes clear to you later on (whenever that may be) you’ll be glad that you kept quiet… or you may continue to defend yourself as the rest of are 100% clear you are speaking way out of line.

123. bj quimba Says:

Frankly, I’m tired of AK hijacking the site by responding to every perceived slight he receives.

For somebody who prides himself in his ability to make what could be a simple sentence into a ludicrously esoteric and largely annoying turn of phrase, he should understand that many of his posts are hurtful and inflammatory. He shouldn’t be surprised they engender emotional retorts from the majority of this site’s regular posters. By the way, this paragraph I just typed is pretty much how you sound all the time.

And I’m also tired of how you ignore responses. For instance (i’m trying the italics thing, don’t know if it will work):

Your original post in response to your perception of Brian’s plea for more than a $20 donation.

His response:

That said I do not mean to imply that I do not appreciate $20 donations. Anything we get is great. Its just that sometimes peoiple don’t think that “Gee, I just spent $150 at the restaurant last night but I can only get myself to donate 1/10 of that to this important cause

Your posts following the one above:

Yet, as it is, I truly think that Brian ought to be respectful of everyone’s financial status and personal budgets. Instead of acting dissatisfied with a $20 donation that somebody has made to A Deal Is A Deal, he should be gratefully appreciative of their contribution.

You also write:

Yet, as it is, I truly think that Brian ought to be respectful of everyone’s financial status and personal budgets. Instead of acting dissatisfied with a $20 donation that somebody has made to A Deal Is A Deal, he should be gratefully appreciative of their contribution.

He addressed this earlier but you don’t give him the courtesy of alluding to his original response.

You don’t directly reply to his original response with anything good. But you do offer up this amazingly sophomoric resonse:

I spent $4.83 at Taco Bell for dinner tonight.

I’m really tired of weeding through all your posts until it gets back to basketball.

Now, you definitely have good ideas about the Sonics and really take time to think through the issues. I’ve grown to appreciate that.

Why such detail in this post? If threads continue to go the route that this one has gone, I think that AK should be asked to refrain from posting for a period of time.

124. bj quimba Says:

I meant to quote this as AK’s second response. I don’t know what I’m doing with the italics thing.

“Well, Sonicsman, if you’re angry with me about my feelings concerning Brian’s disgruntled mood toward donations of $20 or less by contributors for A Deal Is A Deal, then so be it. On the other hand, though, you have absolutely no grounds to question my love for the Seattle Supersonics.”

125. Alex Chan Says:

I really want to see a trade proposal that includes both Peter Fehse and Steve Logan.

126. Call it like Calabro Says:

AK

You sir are a breed alone around here. Belonging to a very small group of personalities I have come across in life. That would be the type that think because they have studied a thesaurus for hours on end and have developed this outrageous vocabulary they have the right to talk down to anyone. These types mainly hang around their keyboards and wouldnt dare speak in a live public forum the way they type….There is a point sir where overly eloquent turns into brash arrogance. No offense but you seem to breech that barrier much too often.

This seems like a pretty easy-going bunch around here that are more turned off by your $10 words than they are accepting of your knowledge of the game. Me included.

127. Scott Says:

Not sure why everyone keeps responding to the guy that obviously is getting his kicks by making stupid comments and then getting all the attention. The more you keep responding to him, the more often these threads go off track.

128. bj quimba Says:

I haven’t responded to Ak for awhile. I was feeling angry about his attitude towards Deal is a Deal and Brian Robinson. But you’re right. No response is the best response for the most part.

129. rensman Says:

AK, you’ve got it wrong, Brian has never looked down upon ONLY a $20 donation. i believe he’s appreciative of ANY donation but has made the honest call of ‘if there’s anyone out there who can put bigger money up, it would really help’
hardly unreasonable, trust me he could put on much more of a guilt trip if required ,but rather has acted in an honourable way.
you’re seeing things through your own filter. clean the filter out for a moment and think reasonably without your pre-existing agenda.
everyone’s asking for money, TACO BELL included, we have the freedom to donate in which way we want.

130. James B. Says:

Any donation of any size is appreciated. My understanding is that if 1,000 people donate $25 we reach our goal. I say we all boycott the Starbucks lattes for a month (since Shultz got us into this mess) and give our fair share. Why not?

131. Dick Tate Says:

I say we all boycott the Starbucks lattes for a month

I’ve been on that boycott for the last twelve months.

132. Call it like Calabro Says:

“I’ve oftentimes been outspoken in real life, too, ”

Nice. I atleast can now take your coments here as pure fantasy. Nothing is real here to you. It makes sense.

Sorry everyone…Thats my final response to Mr. Fantasyland.

133. Kivman Says:

AK (sigh)
We all (excluding you) appreciate what Brian has done and is doing. You personalize everything, take a slight at ludicrously inoffensive items, and don’t know when to be quiet. You obviously have no respect for anyone on this site since you have so little for Brian. You are showing yourself to be quite a small person.

Feel free to NOT donate money. However, you should not attack the person that is sacrificing the most when he asks for help. You are being mean-spirited, immature, cocky and self-centered.

I’m sure you will have wonderful retorts to this post. Have at it. I will not be responding.

134. feed the hawk Says:

AK:

You say:

“Yes, I’m an outspoken person…that’s neither a good thing nor a bad thing, but rather just a part of my personality…Yet, for whatever reason, you find that to be a detestable quality of mine.”

What you don’t realize is that its not just being outspoken that people detest. It is being spoken to as though they are morons. It doesn’t really matter what words you use when everything you write is combative and demeaning. Those qualities are detestable in what is meant to be a place for people with a common interest to come together to discuss and debate the focus of that interest.

The point is that there are ways to disagree in an honorable and respectful way. Choosing to do so rudely, just for the hell of it, or because “it’s your personality” just means you are an asshole. When you make half the posts on any of these boards and hijack every thread, THAT is the detestable quality.

Your absurd, gratuitous, and tortured diction (or “style” as you call it) makes it all the more maddening.

Please grow up. That is all.

135. A Deal is a Deal Says:

I have not read everyone of the 100+ posts but I did notice some people concerned about the tone of the “asking” fro donations.

We at DIAD appreciate EVERY donation even the $5 ones that we get. In fact when a kid comes up to you at an SOS event and gives you $1 instead of spending it on ice cream it brings tears to my eyes and makes me want to work that much harder to keep the teams here for his future. (I took the $1 for SOS and bought him an ice cream out of my own pocket).

Brian and the rest of us have put a year of our lives and piles of money into this effort. We have not made any kind of hard core fundraising push because we were asking people to donate without a specific result. This is different because there is a very real goal that WILL bring results.

We know everyone will give what they can. Some can’t give much, others can give a lot, and all we hope is that those that can afford to give $500 or $1000 do so understanding that someone giving $10 might be making a choice between giving $10 or eating dinner.

No one has to give a dime, but if the team is worth keeping here for you then we hope it is worth making a little sacrifice to ensure that the team stays here at least through 2010. These initiatives are not cheap, even to get a “slam dunk” like this on the ballot, and passed, is going to cost a minimum of $50,000.

So if 200 people want to keep the team here they can do one of two things…

Commit to collecting 200 signatures in the next 60 days (and deliver on that commitment), or realize that they can’t invest that kind of time and give $300 (which is what it will cost to hire someone to collect that many signatures), or realize that they can’t afford that much so they contact friends or business’s and raise $300 in donations.

If just 200 people do this at MINIMUM we are home free and the Sonics and Storm WILL be here until at least 2010 and they will have the pride of knowing they were one of the few that stepped up and did what the average person won’t.

If we keep them here that long you can be sure that a solution will be found and they won’t be leaving at all.

Isn’t that worth making that extra effort?

Steve

136. Yoon Says:

AK - personal inventory time. If your attitude and personality are this grating on a message board, I can’t imagine that you’re doing much better in the “real world.”

I’ve met guys like you many times before. You hide your lack of social skills behind a smug attitude and a sense of intellectual superiority over those you interact with. As a result, most people don’t like you, which only makes you even more jaded.

Here’s a tip. You’re still young - lose the smug attitude, quit using ten-letter words when a three-letter word will do, and start applying yourself when it comes to your career. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll achieve a level of success where a $20 contribution isn’t that big of a deal. Better yet, you may find more than just dudes posting on your Myspace.

Cheers.

137. Call it like Calabro Says:

It looks like you can offend quite a few people by belittling the efforts of Brian Robinson.

A good sign for the grass roots of America.

138. Menace Says:

AK- As a solid supporter of your smug controversial attitude…….I fail to see the reasoning be your insubordinate approach to Brian’s efforts. What are you doing to keep this team, we all love, here? I thought we were all part of a brotherhood……all part of the same team.

Whats the point other than to say “look at me”?

Considering our knowledge of your place in life………..give me a reason to not consider you a “loser”. We all understand how $20 may set you back. Brian has put forth purpose, effort, and love.

Think about your contribution……to society………to radio……..to yourself.

PS: Stay true to yourself. This isn’t a TV show.

139. epx Says:

Myk-I see what u’re saying, and those peoples’ arguments were unreasonable, definitely. Some of it sounded absurd to be honest with u, and that’s why I think that race could be at the bottom of this for some people. For the others it could just be ignorance, or selfishness, but it’d be nice if they thought about those people who DO care about the Sonics, and the taxes that WE’RE paying that might be benefitting them in some way.

140. David Says:

I echo what Scott wrote. Ignore it. Although this thread has probably resulted in the most AK “contain and control” that I have seen here.

I stopped reading anything AK1984 wrote a long time ago, although at times-especially lately-it has been hard to do.

Most everything written on the topic has been right on. Now back to basketball…

141. Ted Z Says:

Think about how much energy is being wasted on a guy that, as Scott pointed out earlier, acts quite like a five year old who knocks the milk off the kitchen table just so Mom will turn her eyes back to him. If no one reacted to his attention grabbing efforts he’d simply vanish into the ether forever.

Today was a great day, and a great step towards a long-term future for Sonics basketball in the Northwest. Pat yourself on the back, Brian. Let’s hold focus on the Sonics and keeping the team here. Forget the brats.

142. sivicsi099 Says:

COMPLETLY OFF TOPIC - Ran into Bobby Jones (ex-husky/now 76er i think) at my hotel, and thought about talking hoops with him, but of course I chickened out - I get excited and giddy around athletes and celebs, yes, even the bench warmers/12th man.

That’s not a URL, that’s an email address. Try going to
http://adealisadeal.org/

instead.

PS: thanks for backing up the hippies in here. Being a hippie and being a Sonics fan are NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE. It’s totally misleading and off-base to blame this on the hippies… try instead combining the elitist Seattelite art-fart regime (no diss to artists here - just elitist followers) with the omnipotent anti-tax morons, and then you’ll get the likes of I-91.

Thanks Speedcat.

I do know the difference between an URL and an address, it’s just that I was trying to find the paypal site and tried adealisadeal.org but it didn’t work. Might have been a server issue.

Anyway it works now.

Ok, done. $50 towards the cause.

And yes, I know my post looks like I tried to enter the address in my broswer bar…but that’s because I don’t know how to write. :)

This is just another counter productive initiative.

Seattle blew it. Now you are trying to minimize the damage done by Chris Van Dyk. Forcing someone to lose $20 million per year is not going to build a good relationship with the new owners. Stop meddling in the people’s business. You were not appointed to be Mayor. Why elect a Mayor if you don’t trust him to operate in the best interests of the public.

If you really wanted to Save the Sonics you would be drumming up local support for a new arena, raising cash to build it, putting pressure on the legislature to fund it and trying to get the entire community to get behind it. Instead all you are doing is trying to avoid the debt on Key Arena, which is now a white elephant.

Sports Fan, you’re an idiot if you think the fans can “raise cash to build” the arena. And NO, I don’t trust the Mayor to get this one right, although with the new pressure from this initiative, perhaps his hand will be forced to keep the Sonics to the existing lease deal. At the least, it will keep the team here for a couple more years, which is more than what Bennett wants already. Without this, our team is gone right away. At least now there will be more time to find another arena solution.
