3/21/08 Box Score: Sonics 105 Lakers 130
Posted on Friday, March 21st, 2008 at 10:13 pm by Big Chris
Surely the Nuggets are superior to the Lakers - they beat us by a lot more points….right? The Lakers shot incredibly well - 60.7% from the floor, 52.2% from 3pt range, and 84.2% from the charity stripe.
Tenth straight loss for your Seattle Supersonics. I really hate loosing to the Lakers under any circumstance, even if it keeps us in the hunt for a high draft lottery position.
Kevin Durant and Earl Watson led the Sonics with 20 point apiece. Durant had another game without a 3 point shot. Donyell Marshall added 17 points in what may be final effort to convince a team he’s NBA material for next season. I mean if Eric Piatkowski can still get paid…
Johan Petro added 11 rebound, Nick Collison 9 rebounds, and Earl Watson 7 assists.

Presti and Bennett are frustrated with PJ. They feel he is screwing them over and PJ run as Sonics coach could be over soon! They expected the players to respond to PJ more than they do and PJ constant yelling is starting to eat at the players and at Presti. Sam looks bad in all this because he was pushing hard to get PJ from San Antonio.

Some good individual stats for Marshall and Sene stand out as worth noting.
Ridnour quietly putting up good recent numbers in short minutes. Per 48 in last 10 games his efficiency is even a little better than Watson’s very good performance ( in bigger minutes against starter though)
March 21st, 2008 at 11:49 pm
Kevin Durant’s offensive efficiency has been outstanding this month; the next step in his progression to obtaining even grater efficieincy should be developing a three-point shot, which he has sacrificed at this point to boost his field goal percentage.
March 22nd, 2008 at 12:38 am
Marshall was a solid pickup and Sene could be an excellent center. Ridnour needs to get some more core strength to fix his hitch in the longer shot attempts. Petro had double digit rebounds tonight, but he may be limited to a bench role for the Sonics. I hope Durant, Green, Collison and the rest of the Sonics get to stay in Seattle under the city’s rule.

I like Ridnour because he runs the offensive better than Watson. But Watson probably play better defense than Ridnour. I hope Ridnour will stay with Seattle Sonics as he is like a John Stockton type player.

IMO Presti and Bennett knew exactly what they got with PJ, a cheap temp. He’s a good enough teacher to instill the basics and cheap enough to re-build with. No expensive long term deal. Not like they had a lot of options either. No decent coach would have wanted this situation. Give the team some players and this job may attract someone good. It’s part of the plan. PJ has one more season at best.
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:46 am
So we all think this is a good thing right? Better offensive production..more free throw attempts..less shots taken, less 3pt shots taken.
March 22nd, 2008 at 6:59 am
I think at this point calling Ridnour a “Stockton like” player is just too far of a stretch. I hated the draft pick when it was made, then really warmed to Luke as a player because of his work ethic. Now I think he’s broken. At least for this team he is a non-factor.
I think they have to trade Luke just because he needs a change of scenery. He really could thrive there, but I don’t see it here. The problem with him is that physically he’s small and mentally he’s prone to getting too caught up in his own mistakes. In Seattle he’s just been beaten with a stick too much. He needs to go somewhere else where he can put the past behind him and play ball. I don’t see that happening here anymore.
Sene who clearly sucks has 8 points and 3 boards in 8 minutes. If he gets 16 points, 6 boards in 16 minutes are peopel happy?
The nice thing about his line IMO is that he has no turnovers, no PF’s, and shoots above 50%. If he can continue that trend I’m pretty damn happy.
Marshall should never see the court for this team. I doubt he’s here next season.

I made the mistake of doing this kind of thing. Made the mistake of following the example of our head coach. Kids(and men) for the most part, and least from what I have seen, really do respond better to inspiration and challenge rather than being barrated all the time. But that is just my two sense.
Good to see Durant getting that FG% up….and buoyant. I don’t care what analyst on ESPN you are, or what kind of fan perspective you have. Kevin Durant IS the rookie of the year hands down.

Rebuilding is rebuilding, but it’s still pretty depressing to see these kind of box scores every day. Another team shoot 60+%, another team over 120 against us. What’s our record since the Wally/Kurt trades?

2-15

I am keeping track of some stats for this year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament. There have been 32 games played so far, on Thursday and Friday. Here are the W-L numbers for these various stats through the first 32 games:
Higher FG%: 28-4 (.875)
Most Rebounds: 24-8 (.750)
Most Free Throws Made: 19-11 (.633)
Fewest Turnovers: 14-18 (.438)
Most Offensive Rebounds: 13-13 (.500)
Most Field Goal Attempts: 12-19 (.387)
As usual, the most important factor in winning games is shooting a higher fg% than your opponent. So far, the teams which have shot better from the field have won 87.5 % of games.
Total rebounds have been a major factor, as has been making more free throws than your opponent.
As usual, the team which takes the most field goal attempts usually LOSES.
The biggest surprise is that the teams which have the fewest turnovers are losing most of the time. I don’t consider turnovers to be a critical stat, but usually the team which has fewer turnovers wins more than half the time. This is sort of a fluke, so far, in my opinion.
All the other stats look pretty much like every other year I have kept track of them.
When the W-L totals do not add up to 32, that is because in some games each team had the same number of that stat. For example, in offensive rebounds, there have been 6 games when both teams had exactly the same number of offensive rebounds.

Are Bennett / Presti / PJ / Westhead content in their design or does the depth of its failure in this Presti era season 1 cause any second guessing of the others or adjustment?
A design is easy, though what we’ve seen so far is half-baked. Getting it to work, adjusting it til something does is the hard part and if you don’t admit mistakes it won’t get fixed.
When teams know to expect a zone it seems pretty easy for them to get available shots. Most of the damage is being done by avoiding turnovers. Sonics defense is now 24th and if the recent pattern continues they should be back to last year’s 27th before it is over.
When teams know there is little 3 pt shooting (or much post) from the opponent it is pretty easy to make defensive choices.
Hey Dipper, college is a different game/world but have you tracked how important made 3s are there?
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:13 am
Crow: No. I did not think of that. How would you do that? By which team made the most 3-pt shots? By 3-point percentage? I think most 3-pointers made would be the most important way of looking at that.
One reason I posted this today is that the box scores from all those games are still available so people can check the accuracy of my numbers if they want to, or check some other stat which I did not keep track of.
http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/scoreboard?d=2008-03-20&refresh=60
I like Yahoo for box scores. This link is to a calendar. Click on the day, and you get all the box scores for every game played on that day.
So you can go back and check on 3-pointers, or any other stat, if you want to. I would be interested in what you come up with regarding 3-pointers. It might take you half an hour or less to do that for all 32 games played so far, if you are so inclined.
I agree that college is different from the NBA. But also pretty similar. I intend to keep track of the same stats during all games in the NBA playoffs this year, also. Keeping track of every NBA regular season game is just too much of a hassle. I used to do that when I was younger. Spent about 10 minutes every morning writing that stuff down in a notebook. But, since the numbers were virtually the same year after year, I decided there was no sense in continuing to do it. Plus, it is a pretty boring thing to do. The results are interesting to me, but the process of going through every box score every morning is tedious.

PJ sucks. Bennett hired Presti to build the Sonics to lose until they can leave town and establish themselves in OKC.
I hope that, contrary to the common theme in most all email responses from city council members, the city does not accept a buyout, and holds that scumbag Clay to his investment for at least the nxt two years.
I think that Emiliano Zapata’s “it is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees” is a gratifying ideology to keep in mind here. IF the BOG votes to relocate the Supes, then I have little-to-no faith we will get the NBA back anytime soon. For that, I would oppose a buyout and vocally support going after the league for what they and Clay are doing to us. Sue them into the ground.
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:56 am
The Sonics should be the intellectual property of the city of Seattle and/or state of Washington for their positive, stimulating history in our local and state community.
Durant jersey sales funding public sidewaks and transportation initiatives? The gov. really dropped the ball here…
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:56 am
I agree Dipper 3s made is the best if you use just one stat, but perhaps some product of 3s made and actual FG% - league avg 3pt FG% or overall FG% would be even better.
I am not interested enough in the college game to calculate it for the tourney myself. It was just a possibility if it was intriguing enough for you. Alex keeps us well-informed about that aspect of the pro game.
The reasonable limit for stat work is wherever you want to draw it and when you stop finding or seeing something new and useful is a good standard for a fan.
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:13 am
Who turned the ball over? Will Seattle lose the Sonics and our new franchise superstar because of the government financial blunders??? I just want the Sonics to stay so I can keep alive my dream of playing in the NBA….or maybe I should go back to school and walk on as a college recruit.
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:15 am
Rose, Beasley or Bayless with the #1 pick if we land it…???
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:56 am
phenom, do you wish to wish to share age, height, high school averages / honors? Your choice.

About time the lottery balls are randomly selected during a televised event to eliminate the Stern error factor.

I’ll email you my resume if I can have your email address.
March 22nd, 2008 at 12:06 pm
I’m as old as I feel like, I’m as tall as I can stretch or jump and I almost had a perfect shooting game my freshman year before my three-point field goal attempt rolled out at the last second to leave me stuck on only twenty-seven.
March 22nd, 2008 at 12:37 pm
I’m five feet and ten inches in length, but I’m known as the freak who dunked the ball in practice. In fact, I was a member of the dunk contest during the SuperSonic’s basketball camp in Yakima during 1989. I played against Dana Barros during the scrimmage and my lock-down defense helped him retire into a management position with the Celtics. Cougar Cage Camps were amazing and I always dreamed to see the Sonics play in Key Arena. I’m just a boy, but I dream of basketball.
March 22nd, 2008 at 1:15 pm
Ok phenom I get some idea about your background. I didnt mean to pry and don’t really need a resume I was just showing interest and giving you a chance to say a few words about yourself. Sounds like you have athleticism and skills and certainly passion.
March 22nd, 2008 at 1:44 pm
But you meant 1999 I think?
If you want to send your basketball resume to me just out of friendly conversation (I have no pull with team) you could to this email account I use for some basketball related internet activity

March 22nd, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Well actually I don’t know what date you meant in terms of playing an older Barros. in 1989 he was still a young Barros.
March 22nd, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Did somebody really write that Ridnour is a John Stockton-type player? Really? Really? Well, aside from the fact that Stockton was a great shooter, tougher than hell, the best assists and steal man in history, and fiercely competitive, Ridnour is EXACTLY like Stockton…
March 22nd, 2008 at 7:21 pm
So Luke isn’t known for his razor sharp elbows?
