Pulling a Heat? Wilcox out for the rest of this season

Posted on Friday, March 28th, 2008 at 7:45 am by Big Chris

Yep, due to a dislocated finger, Chris Wilcox will not play again this season. Wilcox originally hurt it January 3rd against Phoenix, and then re-injured it March 19th against the Suns. Wilcox is the second leading scorer for the Sonics. I’m confident that this move assures us the worst record in franchise history.

A quote from Presti via ESPN:

“After gathering all of the necessary information, the decision has been made to rest the injury and allow for the proper recuperation and rehabilitation to avoid further damage,” Sonics general manager Sam Presti said Thursday. “We are disappointed that we will be without Chris the remainder of the season, but look forward to having him back healthy next year.”

    Free Mo Sene!

(why thank you…I’ll take two then…)

    Big Chris

Weak, why is presti making us look bad?! What ever happened to taking things one step at a time and at the very least not look like we are TRYING to tank the rest of the season?! That method sure worked well for getting boston a good draft pick last season……..

I imagine NBA players play through alot of nagging injuries that us fans never hear about. But it’s about helping to make your team get into the playoffs and beyond. That’s what being a paid professional who makes a living trying to win basketball games is all about. Kobe Bryant’s finger is probably as bad if not worse than Wilcox’s but he is the leader that has to play if the Lakers are to go anywhere.

Sure Seattle knew a long, long time ago they weren’t bound for the post season. But at this stage I have no problem with sitting Wilcox for the rest of the season. I guess the biggest drawback is for the fans that like to watch him play. There’s probably a bigger uproar in Miami with fans not having a chance to see Dwayne Wade than Sonics fans crying over the loss of Wilcox. But Wade is their franchise and to risk him being hurt for the longer term isn’t an option when you know your season is a bad one.

The question is whether Presti gives a D Leaguer a chance in the big show or he just let’s Donyell Marshall have more time.

But Big Chris’ Free Mo Sene chant has merit to it at this stage of the year. I see no reason now that things are winding down to not give Sene lots of time to see what he can do. No reason at all that I can think of.

I say give “the grand plan” a shot. Throw Green at PF, KD at SF, Sene at C

  5. Clint Says:

This is just another act of Bennett to decrease the short-term interest level in the Seattle team.

    Presti is a Spurs-forged tool.

  6. Bigsmooth Says:

What a season. What a crazy mess of a season.

  7. phenom Says:

Wilcox’s trade value had already peaked and he could be another team’s priority to acquire on draft night or next season. It’s an appropriate time to evaluate Sene’s progress and potential as a defensive and rebounding force. Marshall is a solid team player willing to help Collison do the dirty work and the Sonics as a whole are green, but even the snakes sense the gold.

  8. Mr. Baker Says:

I think they would lose just as many games with him on the floor, as without, at this point.

Earl story in the newspaper today is a near repeat of one written a couple months ago. He does not like losing, thinks there is a plan. There is, but it does not involve him starting in front of the coming draft pick, I’m sure he will get his numbers, sulk, and hope for a trade to another team.
Hey Earl, the team isn’t very good, that includes you.

  9. jay Says:

this just give big nick more playing time..maybe he can get 30 rebounds this time..lol

  10. Clint Says:

    hahahaha.

Oh how I loathe Earl Watson’s decision making.

  11. courtsense Says:

    No new contract for Wilcox!

Presti should either package Wilcox with a pick and/or Ridnour and trade him on draft day, or move him at the deadline in 09.

  12. Mr. Baker Says:

Or, he can sign him to a free agent contract to the new expansion franchise in Oklahoma City.

  13. Dick Tate Says:

My pinkie hurts too. I wonder if i’m in line for workers compensation.

Hey! First post. Has anyone else seen this article about rumblings/changes in Grizzly ownership? Might be nothing, or it might be interesting as far as our situation goes.

Anyone catch the news on Schultz? Karma is a B$^%*, Mr coffe-man. Pay the kind workers and suffer.
“extremely unfair and beyond reason”?!?!?! what you mean like when you sold YOUR soul and OUR team?!?!?!

MEMPHIS thinking on drafting Rose, what does that mean for Conley? I can see some possible trades involving sonics-grizzleys

  17. Clint Says:

Kobe is playing all-star ball with a finger problem.

Wilcox can’t even suit up and give 10-15 minutes of work.

I understand the biz side in protecting value and all, but this seems like another horrible example of how the NBA is a for-profit biz - nothing more, nothing less.

I can’t stand Bryant on most levels, but admire his passion for the game and current commitment to his team. Wish Wilcox had half of Bryant’s character when it comes to finger injuries.

  18. courtsense Says:

Sorry, but unless we’re talking about Chris Paul or Tony Parker, I don’t want a 6-0 or under, 175 pound PG like Mike Conley. I’ll take a bigger guy like Rose or Mayo any day over that scenario.

Presti has talked about big, athletic, rangy guys who can defend multiple positions - Conley can barely defend his own position, let alone bigger players. Maybe a guy like that works as an energy changer off the bench, but not for 35 minutes a night.

  19. carlos Says:

I meant if by any chance they ended up ahead of us in the draft,

  20. Myk Says:

MEMPHIS thinking on drafting Rose, what does that mean for Conley? I can see some possible trades involving sonics-grizzleys

    - Im a strong defender of the BPA strategy..but they sure better have some trades set up because 4 PGs under 22 y/o makes no sense.

Sorry, but unless we’re talking about Chris Paul or Tony Parker, I don’t want a 6-0 or under, 175 pound PG like Mike Conley. I’ll take a bigger guy like Rose or Mayo any day over that scenario.

    - Im sure if Paul or Parker came into the league at 19 and had to compete with three other players for minutes they’d have had a few struggles as well. If Conley was available (for a relative discount) I would take him without hesitation.

  21. carlos Says:

maybe a mix of 2nd rounders and a big (petro?) for conley, that would fill the pg spot and give room for drafting another position (sg mayo?). Then it would be:

    PG conley-watson
    SG mayo- d-wilk
    SF durant -green
    PF green - collison
C ? (trading wilcox and something else could bring a decent center)

    That’s a great young team

  22. D_G Says:

I recall seeing discussed somewhere recently a two league model (major and minor league) in which each team is independent, and the best three teams from the minor league advance to the majors and the worst three teams from the majors are demoted to the minors (in the next year).

(If I recall the precident is some European soccer league).

Anyhow, this seems like an ideal solution to two of the NBA problems. (1) Both Seattle and OKC want a major league team — both can have their own team, and they compete (along with all others) to see who is in the majors. (2) Tanking at the end of the season chasing ping-pong balls? Only in the minor league.

I’m sure it would never happen, but it is nice to think that there are potential solutions to seemingly intractible problems.

  23. Menace Says:

“MEMPHIS thinking on drafting Rose, what does that mean for Conley? I can see some possible trades involving sonics-grizzleys”

Doesn’t mean squat. Why would they trade either player? And if they did…..we would have nothing to offer to get one of them. Its ok to have a surplus of talent at a position…..especially PG.
