NBA fan blogs - Spreading the SOS virus
Posted on Tuesday, April 15th, 2008 at 9:00 pm by Big Chris
I love viral marketing. Big shout out of thanks to South Florida Fan!
Update - 4/16 7:30AM: This morning I emailed something like 30 people who run NBA fan blogs and asked directly that they join us in our effort to Save the Sonics. So if some people from outside the Sonics fan base show up, play nice, as they don’t know all the details of our efforts up to this point.
This is the best list I can put together on short notice. Feel free to add more blogs in the comments, and let me know if any links are dead too.
Quoting South Florida Fan:
IMPLORE EVERY NBA TEAM BLOG TO POST THE ADDRESS OF THEIR OWNERS. IN ADDITION, LETTERS SHOULD INCLUDE SOMETHING LIKE THIS:
“As a form of protest, we vow to boycott any game next season in which the Oklahoma City Sonics play, whether it be in our arena or watching it on television.”
Spread this around as much as you can. It’s going to take the other teams to prevent this from happening. Let’s save the Sonics!
Another cool thing started by the fans of the Cleveland Cavaliers - Fan Petition. At this point we ask that Sonics fans not sign this, as we want it to be a genuine reflection of the Cav’s fan’s support.
Thanks to Tim Keown @ ESPN - The Seattle situation is one giant black eye for the NBA
Some additional NBA blogs can be found on BallHype.
Addicted To Quack has a great article supporting SOS - Thanks Dave!

Hi there. Just want to say hi.
Bye.
April 15th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Several threads ago there was a link to a nice petition from Cleveland fans to their owner re voting no to relocation. It would be nice to tie that idea in with the OK boycott.

Here’s the Cavs fans’ petition;

I don’t think Seattle fans should add to it though. It will make a bigger statement if it is coming from NON Seattle fans imo.

The Atlanta Hawks blog is a broken link.

It looks like the indycornrow guy beat us to it. He has a linked image to saveoursonics.org.
Is that sight up to date?
April 15th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
As a courtesy to the cause, I’m going to move all our other blog pieces down below the Sonics one for the rest of the night. I want to make sure people see it at the top of the page.
I’m devoting the next 3 hours to this (on ET). If I can pledge that time, then so can others.
April 15th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
You Rock Man. I hope you know how much this means to us.

just posted on the Suns blog.

South Florida - you’re my hero.
Here’s the email I’m sending out to the different site’s leaders:
Dear Co-NBA Brother,
I’ll start with this: I’m a Sonics fan. I realize, that on any given night, if your (team name) are going head to head with my Supes, we are on opposite sides of the fence and wouldn’t buy each other a beer. Today, however, I’m hoping that you’ll be able to see beyond the court to the bigger picture.
As an NBA fan, I would imagine you’ve been following to some extent, what’s happening up here in Seattle. We are in the midst of having our hearts ripped out by a deceitful ownership group trying to steal our team. A local ownership group has stepped up to the plate in an effort to save the team, and the community has rallied behind them. Despite the local momentum, much of how this all plays out will hinge on how the NBA Board of Governors will vote regarding the relocation bid. The vote is scheduled to take place in 2 days (April 17). Here’s where you come in.
Let your team’s owner know that you do not support the relocation of the Sonics to Oklahoma City. Email him. Write him a letter. Call him. Let him know you will boycott any game next season in which the Oklahoma City Sonics play, whether it be in your arena or on tv.
A warm-hearted Miami Heat fan who has gotten involved in the protest gave us the idea to reach out to other team’s fan bases and had this to say on our Sonicscentral.com blog: “Spread this idea around as much as you can. It’s going to take the other teams to prevent this from happening. Let’s save the Sonics!”
I implore you- if you feel like what is happening is wrong - if you aren’t buying Clay Bennett and David Stern’s lies and cover ups - if you don’t want to see a precedent set where the NBA can rip 40+ years of tradition away from any community that doesn’t bow it’s knee in submission - then take action. The Board of Governor’s meeting is in 2 days. We love our team as much as you love yours. If we don’t stop this travesty from occurring, it could happen to any team or market. Please do your part and help us. It’s the 11th hour, but it’s not too late!
Our most sincere thanks,
Tyler

Andre give us highlights on the espn bit? Was it a rehash of the earlier clueless piece?
April 15th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
What did they do give 30 seconds to it?
April 15th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Brilliant letter, Tyler, and thanks for the nice words. 5 years ago, a protest like this wouldn’t be possible.
In today’s Internet age….I think it can be done. We can have major publicity surrounding this, the more it takes off.
Teams all around the NBA will be playing their last game tomorrow, and this could be a topic of discussion on each broadcast. I hope we can reach them all in time.
April 15th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
My message (not nearly as good as Tyler’s):
Hi,
As a fan of the Seattle Supersonics, I am writing to ask everyone to please help us keep our Sonics in Seattle. If you have a moment, I would really appreciate it if you would write your owner and ask him to vote NO to the relocation of the team. This is a fight that can be won, but we need your help! One way would be to send this message:
“As a form of protest, we vow to boycott any game next season in which the Oklahoma City Sonics play, whether it be in our arena or watching it on television.”
April 15th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
The pen is a mighty sword my friends! Keep up the good fight!
Save our Sonics!

Let’s all be sure to contact the blog’s ADMINISTRATORS as well as posting. They are the ones who can bring attention to the issue on their blog’s front page. A post in a thread is nice, but people may or may not read it. Let’s focus on the administrators who can help us the most by bringing attention to the issue to the forefront.
HELPFUL TIP (maybe):
If any of you are having trouble figuring out how to email the respective team’s administrators without Outlook (like I was), try this: If you can find a”contact” link somewhere on the front page and mouse over it, the email address shows up in the bottom left hand of the explorer window.
Let’s rally all NBA fans to our cause! Thank you Miami and Cleveland fans for reaching out and giving us the confidence to ask for support from our NBA brethren. We’re really all in this together.
It’s not too late!
April 15th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
yeah, espn did about 5 seconds of what they were “going” to cover on the show. They didn’t even get to it. Bennett must have wired them 50 grand real quick and told em not to do it.

Another option for you to send out…
Dear Basketball Fan,
First off, I apologize for the form email. I am trying to reach the largest possible audience as this is an extremely time-sensitive matter. I approach you as a die-hard Sonics fan making a plea for help. As an avid follower of the NBA, you are surely aware of the Seattle Sonics’ potential relocation to Oklahoma City. The NBA’s Board of Governors (composed of the 30 team owners) will be voting on Clay Bennett’s relocation request in two days. Contrary to popular belief, the relocation is far from inevitable. If we, as a community of NBA fans, speak out against this atrocity and voice our concerns to the owners, this move can be stopped. I urge you to encourage everyone you know to send an email or letter to [INSERT TEAM OWNER], who will be voting on the relocation request this Thursday, and relay the following message:
“I am appalled by Clay Bennett’s blatant disrespect for the fans of Seattle and disregard of the good faith effort he promised to make. If this relocation is approved, it is a slap in the face of NBA fans everywhere. Seattle has passionately supported the Sonics for 41 years and deserves a fair chance to keep its team. If this move is approved, I vow never to attend an OKC Sonics game when they visit [INSERT LOCAL ARENA NAME], nor will I ever watch their games on TV. Please respect your customers and REJECT Clay Bennett’s relocation request.”
This tragedy should strike a chord in the heart of every basketball lover. You have probably skimmed a few articles on ESPN and dismissed the situation as something that could never happen to your team. I cannot blame you; that was my reaction when the Grizzlies left Vancouver and the Hornets left Charlotte. You likely think that Seattleites simply care less about their team than [INSERT CITY] cares about the [INSERT TEAM NAME]. ‘If they really wanted the Sonics to stay, they would have built an arena’ says the casual observer. Let me tell you this repulsive story goes much deeper. This is an act of outright deceit and corruption on the part of Clay Bennett and his good friend David Stern. There is a local ownership group eager to buy the team from Clay and keep it in Seattle. The government is willing to work in good faith to arrive at an arena solution. Basketball can and will work in Seattle. The burden is on fans like us to step up and save the Sonics. I cannot thank you enough for your help. Sonics fans alone cannot possibly win this battle; we need help from everyone who can imagine what it would feel like to have his best childhood memories ripped away from him by an out of town owner.
April 15th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
Why limit ourselves to blogs? People, post this idea on every internet forum you know of!
I’ll admit, I’m not a fan of the NBA, but no town deserves to lose their team, no matter what the sport. Especially a team as steeped in tradition as the Sonics.
April 15th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
For all of you who are emailing other team’s blogs to rally support from other fansites, here’s another resource: There are probably mostly duplicates listed, but this Cleveland Cav fansite has many other team’s fan blogs listed as well

Let me second what Rate said. I think the next step after blogs is to go after newspapers. Every NBA city has a newspaper. Maybe we make it more of a story, such as:
“There’s a huge viral campaign going around right now that you might want to be aware of……
Even if they don’t take a side, just reporting it would enhance the cause. Let’s keep going!
April 15th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
TEAM 1040AM Radio in Vancouver Canada had the original Vancouver Grizzlies owner Arthur Griffiths on to talk about the situation in Seattle and he did not have nice things to say about Clay Bennett or David Stern at all…He knows from the time that Clay bought the team they wanted to move them..nothing new, but its good to hear that everyone is hearing about this shady NBA business going on…he questions the integrity of the NBA…
April 15th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
what integrity? you mean the NBA where amazing happens?
April 15th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
TJKK… Great letter & great idea to try & get the bolg administator to give this some highlighted attention. Let’s all get this moving as much as possible in the next 24-48 hours. I’ll do what I can moving around some of these blogs.
S. Florida is right - the Internet & blogging changes everything. If we can get this on some national media all the better. I e-mailed Simmons on this.

I just sent emails to most every administrator on the list Big Chris provided above. Some were not team-specific blogs though. I couldn’t find the contact link for the following sites:
Kings (Sactown Rally)
Clippers (ClipNation)
Spurs (Pounding the Rock)
Cavs (the POJO Dojo)
Nuggets (Nugg Doctor)
Magic (Third Quarter Collapse)
Does anyone have the administrator contact info for any of these?

Just got a response from the 76ers blog moderator…he’s going to post on it tomorrow. Here’s what he wrote me:
“I support the Sonics in Seattle. I’ll be sure to write something tomorrow (Wednesday) and start a petition to e-mail to the Sixers.”
Keep up the activity…it’s working!
April 15th, 2008 at 11:24 pm
“Anyone see this from Seattle Weekly??” {Myk}
Astonishingly, “Never Gonna Give You Up” was finally used in an enjoyable fashion. After a few years of the obnoxious “rick roll” cultural phenomenon, I’m mightily impressed by that there’s a way for me to not be annoyed with one-hit wonder Rick Astley.

Big ups to all the fans of other NBA teams for the support.
Your support means alot to us. We know we are not fighting alone.
Caz seriously, waking up to Stern and everyone saying “Your team is gone, give up, maybe we will grant you an expansion team later, maybe…” is some depressing stuff.
Thanks for recognizing the wrongdoings of Stern and Bennett.
Keep fighting the fight y’all
April 15th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Wow!! Keep the great work of spreading the info! It gets better every minutes and hope it becomes into seconds!
April 15th, 2008 at 11:27 pm
I sent an email through the web form at the nytimes site to Howard Beck to see if he is going to cover the league meeting.
If they report on it, it is news.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
Great move here to reach out to blogs. I want to say Thank you to the Governor for writing a letter to Mr. Stern and the other owners regarding the relocation vote. A lot of people blasting her for not doing more but let things play out and don’t be quick to blast her. Just remember all the blasting we did with Howard and all of the Sudden he does not look so bad. The Gov needs to Save the Sonics or she likely will lose the election and she knows that so I think the letter is simply the start and we shall see what happens. I am very curious what type of role Gary Payton may be playing in all of this behind the scenes. Something about his interview and his being at the game on Sunday has had me thinking a lot. He could end up being a big player in this when it is all said and done. Could you imagine Schultz and Payton working together to Save the Sonics after their history together. Payton mentioned the one thing he would change about his career was the 2003 public spat with Schultz. We will see what happens.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
TJKK,
It seems like your strategy is working very well. Any suggestions for me from here?
April 15th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
I just wrote Tim Keown of ESPN to let him know this is happening.
I think we need to let every NBA cities main newspaper sports section & NBA beat writer know this is happening - NBA fans all over the country are tellin their own owners to vote against this OKC move and will Boycott any OKC Teams games.
Owners need to know this movement is gaining momentuem and it will not stop! Think they want people turning off their TV’s and staying home when K. durrant is playing?
April 15th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
“Look at the utter nonsense this Okie is spouting off. Everybody should send him an email and completely blast this dude!!!” {Sonic Scott}
That article had some good lines, though, including the amusing “Beelzebub Bennett” quip.
Let’s hope that Howard Schultz isn’t trying to just save face here and, in fact, is willing to break the bank — which, in his case, is pretty heavily stashed with cash — to keep the Seattle SuperSonics here in the Emerald City.
I’m all for second chances, with this being a big one.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:43 pm
Bennett will argue that the context is all wrong, that he still was talking about a Seattle arena deal, and nobody in Seattle will believe him, but I don’t see him cracking on the witness stand.
- Anyone see this in the the OKC article. So…the reason the Schultz lawsuit wont work is because when Bennett said he was “a man possessed” he was really saying he was “possessed” with getting an Arena in Seattle.
Seriously…….I REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY want to have a little respect for OKC citizens. I don’t want to be the “elitst” people that they claim most Seattle people are. But seriously, the things they say almost give you no other choice, right?
April 15th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
I just sent a message to David Locke of Salt Lake City. Maybe we should contact the sports stations as well….it wouldn’t hurt.
this is amazing what we are doing and all the help that we are receiving. SOS
April 15th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
Although this whole brouhaha with the Seattle SuperSonics isn’t as damning as the Tim Donaghy gamblin’ scandal, it must be almost to the point in which NBA Commissioner David Stern can’t handle all of the hullabaloo regarding the negative public relations that’s surrounding him.
I don’t know if either the City of Seattle’s pending court case with the Seattle SuperSonics or Howard Schultz’s potential lawsuit against the Professional Basketball Club, LLC will bring about Stern’s breaking point, but he’s probably questioning his allegiance with Clay Bennett more and more nowadays.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:50 pm
If you recalled my point of view about Unity and Attitude from my post few weeks ago about my experiences at my university, where we had removed two presidents from the university. I am seeing that now with Sonics fans and other NBA fans formed a powerful unity and attitude. I knew that unity and attitude is a powerful tool to use. Why I said that? Unity is a self-defined and no need to elaborate on that part but attitude is important part. We are showing the attitude in the most appropriate approach by sending out the messages to everywhere. We, Sonics fans and everyone, have showed class by stand up for what is right. We did not need to act crazy, violently, belligerence, and do something stupid that will not support our strong causes.
Keep the ball rolling and great work! It is not over until WE know that Sonics are staying put in Seattle, Washington.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
Yes, absolutely. The key to making this successful will be for the drive to continue through tomorrow morning. Whatever newspapers and radio stations haven’t been hit, they can still be hit if the momentum continues. Let’s find a way to push and push. Great work everyone.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
Does anyone hav a .pdf or anything similar of the SOS logo tat’s been passed out at games?
April 15th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
“TJKK,
It seems like your strategy is working very well. Any suggestions for me from here? ”
South Florida,
I’m probably not qualified to be giving out suggestions - just doing my best to get the word out. With the avalanche of national news coverage over the past couple days and the BOG vote coming up before the end of the week, it seems to me that tomorrow is just the perfect time to make our move with the rest of the NBA fan community. Awareness is high and NBA fans seem to be both sympathetic and up in arms. I’m just going to keep emailing different blog administrators and perhaps newspaper sports editors through the night and hope for the best tomorrow morning.
I think the most powerful angle you (again Mr South Florida) have is that you’re a Heat fan! Every email you take the time to write holds that much more weight with non-Sonics fan readers because you’re an “outsider” who has gotten passionate about the cause. Your contributions are already more than we Sonics fans could thank you for. Let’s put it this way…whatever you’re willing to do, we’ll humbly accept.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
“Anyone see this in the the OKC article. So…the reason the Schultz lawsuit wont work is because when Bennett said he was “a man possessed” he was really saying he was “possessed” with getting an Arena in Seattle.” {Myk}
Yeah, that was an asinine comment by the Okie reporter.
“Seriously…….I REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY want to have a little respect for OKC citizens. I don’t want to be the “elitst” people that they claim most Seattle people are. But seriously, the things they say almost give you no other choice, right?” {Myk}
For every elitist in Seattle, there’s a hick in Oklahoma.
It’s not a bad thing, but rather the honest-to-goodness truth.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:59 pm
The South Florida Fan: Thank you for your effort and support of what you have done. We need everybody to work with us. You just have broke the wall and let it spill all over the Internet. Great work and thank you again.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:02 am
Thanks TJKK. I think I can squeeze in some more e-mails tomorrow around work.
In addition, I’m going to see if I can get all 17 contributors on my blog to do their part. Maybe I’ll even assign regions to each one. If half of them deliver, that’s a lot more than 0.
And thank you again. I just hope this works.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:03 am
Do we have a comprehensive list of NBA owner’s email addresses? I think that would be good to include when sending correspondence to blogs that aren’t necessarily affiliated with a specific team so they can post general owner contact info.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:07 am
Here’s an ammended email I am sending out to more general NBA blogs that are not team specific. Anyone, feel free to cut and paste if you’d like:
Dear Co-NBA Brother,
I’ll start with this: I’m a Sonics fan. I realize, that on any given night, if whatever team you hold near and dear is going head to head with my Supes, we probably wouldn’t be buying each other beers.
The vote is scheduled to take place TOMORROW (April 17). Here’s where you come in.
Get your blog readers to let their team’s owners know that they do not support the relocation of the Sonics to Oklahoma City. Have them send their owners emails. Write them letters. Call them at home! Perhaps you even suggest that they threaten to boycott any game next season in which the Oklahoma City Sonics play, whether it be in an arena or on tv. As the administrator of an NBA fan blog, you have a powerful voice. Please use it! You can do what we never could - we need you!

Please do your part and help us. It’s the 11th hour, but it’s not too late!

April 16th, 2008 at 12:16 am
I’m in Hawaii so it’s only 9:15 PM so I’m going strong!
I just sent this e-mail to Mark Cuban:
Hi Mark,
Love your support for keeping the Sonics in seattle, your passion for hoops and doing what is best for the league.
I want you to know about something that is happening across the country. You may not receive these messages because your fans know you are going to vote “NO” on Clay Bennet’s move request.
Blogging is changing communication options and NBA fans around the country are uniting to express their support for keeping the Sonics in seattle.
They realize 2 key things:
1. This is a league issue - not just a Seattle issue
2. Dave Stern & Clay Bennett have been terribly dishonest and manipulative. They are throwing Sonic fans under the bus after being a positive NBA city for 40+ years.
Here is what is happening right now (Started today & going STRONG): Through a massive and continual blogging effort - fans in every NBA city are contacting each other and then fans are contacting their team owner and asking them to vote “NO” on Clay Bennet’s move request. In addition, if this move is approved, they are pledging to boycott any NBA OKC team games.
Here is the concise message:
“As a form of protest, we vow to boycott any game in which the Oklahoma City Sonics play, whether it be in our arena or watching it on television.”
This movement started with fans in Clevaland and Miami. In just the first 24 hours we have confirmation of 100’s of fans who are catching this vision and sending this message to their team owners and pledging to boycott any NBA OKC team games. This time tomorrow it will be 1000’s.
We think this is huge. Do NBA owners want people to stay home and turn off their TV’s when Kevin Durrant is playing - one of the biggest young stars in the league? Do NBA owners really want growing resentment, cynicism, anger and a lack of trust among NBA fans across the country? I don’t think so but that is what they will get if this move is approved. I know you understand this - but I doubt David Stern does and I don’t think Clay Bennett cares.
My guess is David Stern will say this is no big deal. He will minimize it. “Just a few isolated fans”. If so, he is in denial. With the internet, communication, mobilization and organization capabilities have changed. This issue is bigger than him. He can’t control it.
Please be aware of this and let your fellow owners know, NBA fans are serious about this and we can organize in ways that were previously impossible. If this move is approved we will spend 1000’s & 1000’s of hours in the coming months to mobilize a national boycott of any OKC NBA games. Why? Because we “Care”.
Thanks again Mark for all your support! You are a hero in Seattle!
April 16th, 2008 at 12:28 am
I would expand your letter to say “If this move is approved we will spend 1000’s & 1000’s of hours in the coming months to mobilize a national boycott of all NBA games and NBA advertisers.”
But thats me
April 16th, 2008 at 12:30 am
Wonderful JJ. I hope Mark Cuban helps us out. He’s the type who would.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:31 am
JJ,
First of all, you’re posting from Hawaii? I guess I missed your call, or your email reminding me of the departure time. Nice.
Second, great job on the letter to Cuban. He’ll dig that at least as much as I did. Check out his blog sometime…
Third, I still cannot believe you’re posting from Hawaii - I mean, why are you there, and I’m stuck here in my endless winter of discontent? JJ, did you know there was actually talk of snow in some lower elevations tonight? Do you even care? I bet you don’t - you’re probably too busy figuring out which beach to have breakfast at tomorrow morning.
Write again when you have time, or maybe send a card. Bye.

If someone has NBA owners e-mail’s, NBA city Press Writers E-mails I would suggest sending them this note tomorrow:
NBA Owners Need to Know This:
Sonic fans are thrilled to be receiving this week an amazing outpouring of support from NBA fans across the country. As we communicate online we are hearing from fans outside Seattle loud and clear that they know:
1. The potential move of the Sonics is a league issue - not just a Seattle issue
2. Dave Stern & Clay Bennett have been terribly dishonest and manipulative. They are throwing Sonic fans under the bus after being a positive NBA city for 40+ years.
Here is what began to happen on April 15. Through a massive and continual blogging effort - fans in every NBA city are contacting each other and then fans are contacting their team owner and asking them to vote “NO” on Clay Bennet’s move request. In addition, if this move is approved, they are pledging to boycott any NBA OKC team game.
Here is the pledge we are receiving from fans across the country if Clay Bennet’s move request is approved:
“As a form of protest, we vow to boycott any game in which the Oklahoma City NBA Team plays, whether it be in our arena or watching it on television.”
This movement started with fans in Clevland and Miami. In just the first 24 hours we have confirmation of 100’s of fans who are catching this vision and sending this message to their team owners and pledging to boycott any NBA OKC team games. Tomorrow is will be 1000’s. This is just the beginning.
Our guess is David Stern will say this is no big deal. He will minimize it. “Just a few isolated fans”. If so, he is in denial. With the internet communication, mobilization and organization capabilities have be revolutionized. This issue is bigger than him. He can’t control it.
Please know, fans in every NBA city are serious about this and we can organize in ways that were previously impossible. If this move is approved we will literally spend 1000’s & 1000’s of hours in the coming months to mobilize a national boycott of any OKC NBA games. Why? Because we “Care”.
Vote “NO” on the Sonics move to OKC!
April 16th, 2008 at 12:41 am
JJ - you should reach out to True Hoop on ESPN. He has been very active and will most likely link. Especially if you, South Florida and Cleveland coordinate. Oh, and he has a thing for Mark Cuban’s blogging policy.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:45 am
Another positive response from one of the Celtics blog admins:
“You’ve reached out to the right guy… I’m actually friends with Sam Presti (we both played basketball at Emerson College). We’ll see what we can do.”
Can’t wait to see what tomorrow morning brings!
April 16th, 2008 at 12:48 am
I just e-mailed Truehoop and Simmons with impassioned pleas. I also e-mailed my entire blogging staff. Unfortunately, it’s almost 4am here and I have to get some sleep.
I’ll wake up as early as I can and pick right back up (between working…of course). Thank you all. It’s been a real pleasure getting to know you. I’ll be back on here in the morning.
Best wishes,
ASponge

I failed try to find phone numbers for all NBA owners on Internet. I called the directory with the addresses and came with no luck. I am wondering about E-mail addresses. Anybody having luck finding them?
April 16th, 2008 at 12:56 am
TJKK it would be interesting if the Celtics dude could find out where Presti’s head/heart is. Obviously, his allegiance is to those who pay him and he’s probably buds with CB but it would still be interesting to see how deep that all is. When we keep the team we need someone who will be OUR guy.

I just sent this to KJR hosts & Steve kelly/Percey Allen:
Hi KJR & Seattle Media leaders,
This message is going to NBA owners - SOS fans think this is a big deal - the more you all talk aboout it - spread the word to other media people in other cities the better.
NOTE: This type of message is going to owners from fans in THEIR city - not Seattle fans:
NBA Owners Need to Know This:

Truehoop…. Please post April 16!!!
This basic message is going to NBA owners from their fans starting April 15.

Nice work guys. Love the effort and passion. Let’s keep it up.
Anybody going to be listening to Stern on Mike and Mike tomorrow morning? If so, please fill us in. I heard he was supposed to be on. I’m sure he will try to skirt the issue. And if he does say anything, it will be pro-Bennett. But I’m still curious to see what his strategy is right now.
April 16th, 2008 at 1:56 am
Ok guys. I’m off to bed. I look forward to waking up tomorrow and seeing all the noise you’ve caused in the mean time. SOS!!!
April 16th, 2008 at 2:13 am
According to Randy Hill of Fox Sports on MSN, Kevin Durant “still seems unable of guarding a bear in a phone booth.”
http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/8005496?MSNHPHCP>1=39002
Look, folks, Durant is a loser like I stated from the goddamn get-go. If a player can’t play a lick defense, then they’re a worthless, piece of shit loser.
Durant is, without question, a loser!
The Seattle SuperSonics are in bad shape with a loser running the show. Shit, it’s like having Carmelo Anthony run the show—except without the DUI charges.
There’s no ifs, ands, or buts about it—and that’s that!
It’s too bad that most of you homers don’t seem to get it.
April 16th, 2008 at 2:28 am
Nice work everyone! I will lend my support to the cause when I wake up in the morning =)

April 16th, 2008 at 6:32 am
Stern regarding the Laker’s and Celtic’s #1 seeds….”reaffirming of how good it is to root for a team, even during bad times, because somehow your loyalty will be rewarded by a turnaround.”
regarding the emails, he didn’t know what Trey was referring to as he hasn’t read them, but to wait for Bennett’s response or testimony, but Stern said he believes Clay.
April 16th, 2008 at 6:40 am
Stern says he hasn’t reviewed the emails, “as far as I recall Clay Bennett was talking to the Mayor and trying to arrange meetings, virtually to the end with respect to see if there is a seperate opportunity for the team to stay, under the right circumstances in Seattle, that doesn’t mean all of his partners that lived in Oklahoma City was wishing him well in that pursuit, but he was pretty determined to play out the string in a positive way.”
April 16th, 2008 at 7:15 am
Wow AK. You’re just prooving to everyone you’re a dick who has no sense of timing. Instead of ya know, staying on topic, ya turn your attention to Durant. Everyone knows you hate Durant. GOOD FOR YOU. No one gives a damn. Most of us love the kid. If that’s ignorance, then so be it. The kid can flat out score. I’d like to see you do that. Oh wait, no I wouldn’t. Then I’d be paying to watch some doofus in spandex try to play ball. Picture Richard Simmons and that’s what I think of AK. Some know it all punk who probably is just jealous that Durant is The Durantula. Excuse me, but look at the March and April months. His D didn’t get better? Are you kidding me?
Hey AK, how bout you go play a pickup game against players that are not only stronger than you, but some are faster, most are heavier, try it out. See how well you play against people like that. How much do you want to bet you’d be a terrible defender too? Do you think that if it’s something you worked on hard, considering Durant is 19, that you’d improve? Don’t you think adding muscle and weight onto his frame will help him?
God you’re an idiot. We have so many great posters here and EVERYONE appreciates the work SOS does, but AK has such a big epeenor that he can’t get past “I hate Durant” mantras. Open your eyes kid. He’s 19, wirey thin, and he’s putting up a solid ROOKIE SEASON.
If you don’t like him, good, we already know that. STFU. Guess what? Durant is not going ANYWHERE. He is the Sonic’s future. Get used to it.
April 16th, 2008 at 7:39 am
Hey everyone. I’m back at it again. I hope you all slept well.
Let’s see if the other blogs/sites start doing their part!
April 16th, 2008 at 7:52 am
Hey…
We at AltRaps threw up a small post of the situation in Seattle and I am now seeing the great idea proposed by South Florida and will do the same.
Our original tip-of-the-hat is here: http://www.altraps.com/2008/04/16/its-a-sad-day/
Keep up the great fight.
Scott.

My comments are stuck in moderation (argh)…
Suffice it to say, I wrote over 150 emails last night to as many of the major NBA / team blogs as I could find and am getting great responses this morning. Once my post clears moderation, I included several of the email responses from our fellow NBA bretheren that you all can read.

Thank you Basketball John!
April 16th, 2008 at 8:41 am
It looks like things are starting to take shape. We could really use a big reference from a major personality like Simmons and TrueHoop. Let’s keep trying them.
I posted this new piece just now: http://thesouthfloridafan.blogspot.com/2008/04/save-sonics-gaining-steam.html
April 16th, 2008 at 8:43 am
South Florida Fan,
I emailed back and forth with Henry Abbott this morning. He is aware of what we are doing, but didn’t say whether he would give this some voice on his blog. But either way it is in front of him.
Big Chris
April 16th, 2008 at 8:45 am
Also: I don’t know who your morning radio works in Seattle, but maybe we could get some of us calling in and getting publicity to the cause over the airwaves. Just an idea.
April 16th, 2008 at 8:48 am
Just posted a note on a non-basketball forum I am a member of. I know there’s fans of the Lakers, Mavs, Rockets and Spurs there.
April 16th, 2008 at 8:52 am
I’ll take care of things here in Utah….is there anything official that I should just cut and paste?
April 16th, 2008 at 9:01 am
Let’s keep up the pressure! As Brian reminded us, writing emails to tv broadcasts, radio stations, newspaper editorial sections etc is an easy way that ANYONE ONE OF YOU CAN HELP. I live in Spokane, WA and have been dying for some way to contribute to the SOS effort. If you would like to do your part, now is the time. Grab your computer and spread the word. The web’s a beautiful thing - NBA fans around the country already know about this tragedy from the national coverage it’s been getting. Now we just need to show them where they can direct their frustrations - on their respective team owners to vote NO at the BOG meeting tomorrow!
April 16th, 2008 at 9:01 am
Yeah, I’d be grateful for something like that too, cause I just tried to paraphrase the idea.
April 16th, 2008 at 9:07 am
I just emailed Gordon Monson at the Salt Lake Tribune. Going to email the Daily Herald now.
April 16th, 2008 at 9:10 am

FOR ALL OF YOU HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME FROM OTHER FANSITES (excuse the caps) who are looking for a stock cut and paste piece to put up on your blog that would support our efforts, I’m afraid that I’m not aware of an official SOS version. However, here’s what I’ve seen a few other gracious NBA bloggers have put up around the web. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind if you borrowed their formatting:

Hey guys,
Henry Abbott of TrueHoop e-mailed me this: “I’m on it. I have also been interviewed this morning by NPR, and a Raleigh NC station about the Sonics.”
I think we’re making major headway.
April 16th, 2008 at 10:55 am
I’ll be spreading the “Save Our Sonics” love all around the Bay Area today. If you hear of any SOS chants during the Warriors vs Sonics game then it was problem start by my bro and I. He’s hoping that this last game of 07-08 season isn’t the last SEATTLE Sonics game!!!
April 16th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Mcwalter44 et al.,
The story could really culminate at the Golden State game. A concentrated effort in the Bay Area would be wonderful (and after all, who does protests better than them?)
Let’s rile up all those GS fans.

Another thought for you guys:
ESPN has the Shootaround from 7-7:30 and then two games:
Hornets-Mavericks
Jazz-Spurs
I know Greg Anthony and John Saunders are on the Shootaround show. We could try e-mailing them.
Then also, the broadcasters for the two NBA games. If anyone has that info, we could make an impassioned request.

If any of you have contact information for the league owners, get it over to the Yahoo blog admin, JE Skeets:
jeskeets@yahoo.ca
He’s in our corner, and is compiling a list of all the owners’ contact info for fans across the country to use.
By the way, anybody having trouble with Scentral’s site? It won’t load for me if I access through my favorites or google. I had to click Henry Abbott’s link from the TrueHoop bullet…

Great work all!
McWalter 44 - get some Sonics love in Oakland tonight!
TJKK… You rock
April 16th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Somebody get mcwalter44 a file with the SOS logo. If he’d be nice enough to make several copies and distribute them at the Warriors game tonight, that would be huge!
Seeing a bunch of Warriors fans in Warriors gear holding up Save Our Sonics signs would send a huge visual message to the NBA and fans around the country.
April 16th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
Simmons mentioned the Sonics in his LVP article:
“Nobody showed more character and grit down the stretch of the regular season with one exception: The Sonics fans, who handled a legitimately unfair situation with the perfect balance of rage and nostalgia and brought the sport to a higher place in those final two home games.
(Note to David Stern: This was your Bay of Pigs. This was your Watergate. This seedy, incomprehensible saga stained your legacy — it did — and the sooner you admit publicly that you handled this situation appallingly from start to finish and do your best to make amends, the better off you will be. I’m speaking for all of us here: We don’t want to follow a league where anyone’s franchise can be basically hijacked on a billionaire’s whim. You need to fix this. You need to fix this right now. Back to the column.)”
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/080416
Probably not how some people wanted him to address the situation but at least he doesn’t have that gag order some people were speculating about.
April 16th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
This is great. Thanks to all. I keep hoping that Blazers owner Paul Allen, a Seattleite, will address his fellow owners prior to the vote this Friday. Stern is used to having his way — The last two votes for franchise moves resulted in only 1 owner not going along. Amazing.
If we somehow were able to get a handful of owners to say no, or to even abstain from voting, that would add to this whole mess for the league.

“Hey AK, how bout you go play a pickup game against players that are not only stronger than you, but some are faster, most are heavier, try it out. See how well you play against people like that. How much do you want to bet you’d be a terrible defender too?” {CMTP}
Ironically, I’m a tall and slender guy who has trouble defending people during pickup games for mostly the same reasons as Kevin Durant — with that being my slight frame, mediocre quickness, and occassional lack of effort — thus, I totally get it.
Unlike Durant’s merciless chucking of three-point shots earlier this season, his piss-poor defense isn’t something that he can remedy either now or in the future. It’s always going to be the one thing that’ll prevent him from being a winner at this level.
