Save Our Sonics - NBA blogs making a difference
Posted on Wednesday, April 16th, 2008 at 12:18 pm by Big Chris
I had a really nice post written, and then the site crashed just before I could get it posted. So I will add to this throughout the afternoon/evening.
Our viral effort to spread our passion for keeping the Sonics in Seattle has been joined by a great group of people across the land on NBA fan blogs. I would like to point them out and thank them for the effort.
It looks like some Sonics fans will be at Boeing Field tonight to welcome the Sonics home when their plane lands. Time not confirmed, but roughly 1:00AM is the projected arrival time.

ESPN’s Outside the Lines just did a segment on the Sonics as well. Bob Ley interviewed Gov. Gregoire and Percy Allen from the Times. It was pretty good. Plus, right now on ESPN’s front page there is a poll asking where the Sonics should play next season. Spread the word and get as many people to vote for Seattle as possible.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
The Gov and Percy Allen were just on ESPN. It was a huge special. That’s all I know, I’m at school right now. And they want people to vote on ESPN.

The world is on our side.
Everyone except Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas and Nebraska!
HAHAHA
April 16th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
The poll is showing 70% in favor of Sonics staying in Seattle! I hope NBA and Stern realizes! BOG needs to reject the relocation not delay it! OTL was good clip and I wished they did more but at least they got the info out.
April 16th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
everyone on espn was polite and i’d give it a very good other than the gov said she had alot of respect for the commish..But then what else is she supposed to say. That he’s a bottom dwelling scum sucker ignorant lieing pos who has no business being a leader and that somebody in the ownership group ought to tell him that.AND THAT HE DOESN’T HAVE A MORAL ETHICAL BONE IN HIS BODY AND THAT HE SHOULD GO STRAIGHT TO F**king Hell if there was one.
why doesn’t he show a thread of decency.i’d pay big $’s to see if he has a soul and then beat the F**kin shit right out of him.

I don’t know if this has been mentioned, but the GS Warriors fan blog is on our side too.

“I’m heading out to Seattle tomorrow and look forward to immersing myself in the latest news that Howard Schultz may actually try to save the Sonics. Here’s to hoping this isn’t some rope-a-dope strategy by Schultz to feign an effort to save the Supes while actually only trying to save his image. The phrase of the day is good faith, Mr. Schultz. We’ll be watching you, too.
Hopefully the Simons will side with the city when voting on the potential move. David Stern seems to be stuffing this thing through but it can’t hurt to let the Simons know that the Supes should stay in Seattle.”
April 16th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
This is sort of off-topic, but does anyone know how arena/stadium funding is handled in other countries? Does this sort of extortion/blackmail/whatever only exist in the US?
April 16th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
Old news, but still encouraging…
“We all have a play in trying to keep this team [in Seattle], and even though I’m not here, I would still like to see this team stay in this city.” — Ray Allen, former Sonics guard and current Boston Celtic, Dec. 27, 2007

I have to say for the most part this blog for the supes is very classy. Try going on some of the Okie blogs. Down right rude. They have no idea what its like to lose something you supported for 40 years. FOUR DECADES! I wonder what they would be saying if they canceled the football program at Oklahoma? No Sooners. Think about that before you talk about the SUPES! S.O.S.

April 16th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
I took a little extra time for lunch and went home to watch the ESPN piece!
It was really good. A solid 15 minutes of the Sonics dilemma. The Gov. was on still trying to sell the whole “we didn’t have enough time to pass the funding” line, Percy studdering out his best correct info of what is happening, and the man himself Brian Robinson being very diplomatic and effective (by the way, I didnt know Brian looked like a younger John Clayton) and even pieces of the Stern interview from earlier today. Stern really is sounding pathetic now, but he can’t reverse his course without looking even worse.
Awesome uptick in my feeling about this whole thing today. THANKS ESPN!

I just emailed all of the show hosts over at KJR to let them know what we’re doing over here with the viral marketing campaign. Hopefully they will mention it over the air and get others involved with the online effort. Here’s what I emailed them. (Those of you in the Seattle region, tune in and let us know if this works!)
“Hello KJR!
My name’s Tyler and I’m one of those die-hard Sonics fans that refuses to give up hope that the team is gone. You guys have been providing excellent coverage of the situation, and I applaud you for keeping awareness high throughout the region. Although I’m not formally involved with the Save our Sonics effort, I’m a loyal reader of the Sonicscentral blog site, and last night, several of us posters got together (at the prodding of a Miami Heat fan of all things), and decided to take a viral marketing approach to getting the word out, not just to local residents, but to NBA fans across the country. Our strategy has involved emailing different NBA / team blog administrators and requesting their support. What we asked them to do was post a notice on their blog asking their fans to petition and / or directly contact their respective team’s owner to voice their opinion on the Board of Governor’s vote set to take place tomorrow that would approve or deny Clay Bennett’s relocation request. The results have been overwhelming. After only a few hours, we have fan sites from all across the country posting everything from owner’s contact info, to full-blown petitions. I never would have guessed so many non-Sonics fans care about this issue. I was up until 2 am last night emailing 150+ blog administrators I tracked down online, and as of this afternoon, we’re getting attention from not only them, but other big name blogs that have caught wind of it (Yahoo, AOL, ESPN TrueHoop etc)
I grant you that although it is the 11th hour, this digital age can mobilize movements quickly. I wanted to let you guys know so that you could announce this trending on your programs and encourage Seattleites to go online and spread the word. Sonicscentral.com is keeping an updated thread that links to all of the other NBA team fan sites that are supporting the Save our Sonics effort. If you could encourage your listeners to respectfully BLANKET the NBA blog community with requests for support, I think we could make some waves before the B of G vote tomorrow. The timing couldn’t be better with all of the national attention that’s been focused on this situation over the past few days. I know there are countless Sonics fans who listen to you from their computer at work, and if we all got in on this effort, I believe we can make not only our voices heard, but empower all other NBA fans, regardless of their favorite team, to do the right thing.
Thanks for your support!
Tyler”

I just wish that Gregoire would’ve come up with something more substantial than that little flim-flam letter that she authored. I listed to the Stern interview this morning from Mike and Mike on ESPN and really the only thing that Stern has on us is the fact that there’s still no concrete plan for arena funding. Other than that, Stern seemed as though he was purposefully attempting to not “connect the dots” regarding the Bennett emails (which is to be expected, all things considered).
If Gregoire, Chopp, etc could have stepped up a bit more and made a written commitment to finding the $75 million needed to close the deal, we’d be looking a lot better.

Schultz should win this case…..his agreement with Bennett was written right? not just verbal…
April 16th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Wow. The Seattle Times Sonics forum was shut down by the site due to all the flame wars. That place was constantly bombarded by spiteful, angry, pathetic Okies. Thanks a lot fools.
April 16th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
Lawyer types are all over the place on their opinions of the outcome of this. The Lawyer for Schultz is known by a lawyer I know and says he is the best. Schultz is in good hands. I feel that he has put him in a good position to get this done.

Sonics to be talked about on the Rome show in about a mintue!
April 16th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Keep up the great work all!
I think it is importsant to emphasize that NBA fans across the coutntry are committing to Boycott and NBA OKC games - attending or watching - if this move goes through.
If this gets traction like I think it is it could influence owners who surely must just want this mess cleaned up. The easiest way for them to do it is vote NO Friday on the move - clay would then likely just fold & sell.
That is the simplist solution & the NBA would simply have to be patient that with the big $$$ people involved a new arena would get done.
April 16th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
Of course they are flaming now. Do you really think most of those people care about being honest? You can always tell the makeup of a person by the leader they are willing to follow. Hey, this is war now….I like it better that way….time to flex our collective muscle. The reality is, the nation is getting behind us, ESPN analysts are getting behind us, and now we just have to fight to the bloody, bloody end. After we win this thing, we stitch ourselves up and enjoy 40 more years of Sonics basketball.
April 16th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Oh God. Last I heard Jim Rome went off on how Seattle deserves to lose the Sonics. At least I believe so.
April 16th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Basically they are just hammering the NBA and Stern about how bad this is for the NBA. One of the writers called David Stern, and the other said that Seattle is a top 5 NBA city. That was definetly good publicity.

Bill Simmons today:
(Note to David Stern: This was your Bay of Pigs. This was your Watergate. This seedy, incomprehensible saga stained your legacy — it did — and the sooner you admit publicly that you handled this situation appallingly from start to finish and do your best to make amends, the better off you will be. I’m speaking for all of us here: We don’t want to follow a league where anyone’s franchise can be basically hijacked on a billionaire’s whim. You need to fix this. You need to fix this right now. This South Florida Fan is all over it. Please come to Seattle so we can all get a drink.
April 16th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Simmons actually makes two points:
(Important note: The Celtics were forced to carry Reggie Lewis on their cap for three years after he passed away, as well as Vin Baker for three years after everyone agreed he was showing up drunk for practices. Somehow, Portland is allowed to wipe Miles off its cap because of a career-ending knee injury? Whaaaaaaaaaat? I’m starting the conspiracy theory that David Stern needed the Blazers to be good because he wanted Seattle to have a good team close by after Clay Bennett hijacked the Sonics, so he rigged the 2007 lottery and made this insane Miles decision. Now the Blazers are going to have the best young team in the league and they’ll be a gazillion dollars under the cap after the 2009 season. Really, this is his finest work since he forced MJ to play baseball for 18 months as a pseudo-suspension. The man is a genius.)
April 16th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
It’s great to see the media and casual fans become more involved in this story. A lot of the national media is doing a great job of providing good information about why this is a fiasco, but some other national guys and causal fans outside Seattle don’t seem to be doing much research (PTI guys for instance).
Can we put together a very comprehensive FAQ on this site that answers many of the major questions and criticisms people are having? (Such as “Why didn’t Seattle just build an Arena for them?”, “What was Ballmer’s involvement?”, etc etc)
That way we can just e-mail the link of that page when we send emails to blogs, newspapers, media, etc…
I’d write it personally but I don’t have a firm grasp on the details of this situation as some of the other members of this site do.

“6. Dirk Nowitzki
Here’s the best thing I can say about the J-Kidd trade: During the ‘06 season and most of the playoffs, remember how Dirk would get that “Look, There’s No F—— Way We’re Losing This Game!” look on his face? When he lost confidence after the ‘06 Finals and the ‘07 playoffs, it seemed like that look was never coming back. Now? It’s back. I have to admit, I’m a little intrigued to watch the Big German during these next few weeks. Nobody showed more character and grit down the stretch of the regular season with one exception: The Sonics fans, who handled a legitimately unfair situation with the perfect balance of rage and nostalgia and brought the sport to a higher place in those final two home games.
(Note to David Stern: This was your Bay of Pigs. This was your Watergate. This seedy, incomprehensible saga stained your legacy — it did — and the sooner you admit publicly that you handled this situation appallingly from start to finish and do your best to make amends, the better off you will be. April 16th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Senators Cantwell and Murray have also sent Stern a letter imploring him to allow Seattle find a solution to keep the team here:

I know a lot of people will complain that it is only a letter, but at least it’s something.

That’s cool about Murray & Cantwell. I didn’t expect anything from them. I just wish they would have worded it like Gregoire & asked to reject it OR delay the vote, instead of just asking to delay the vote.

April 16th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
The story about the letters sent from Murray and Cantwell are on the NBA page on ESPN
April 16th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Interesting that Murray is lobbying some owners to vote no or for a delay. I wonder which ones she knows well enough to lobby.
April 16th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Just watched the Outside the Lines segment. I swear the bigger and bigger the story gets just makes things so much better for us. After watching, I browsed through some blogs such as the south florida fan, and it’s really uplifting to see the support we are getting from other NBA cities as far away as Miami.
I’m also getting angrier and angrier at Stern! Can you believe his comments on the Mike & Mike show?! He hasn’t read the e-mails? This guy was a lawyer? He’s read the damn e-mails, he just doesn’t want to acknowledge what’s in them because they are so damning!
Save Our Sonics!!
April 16th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Sonics fan in SLC & Joshu, nice! Glad to see I’m not the only one down here Swinging at the Fences. I talked to my PD’s at The Zone and KALL they’re starting to come around, we’ll see.
Called in to Chris Myers on Fox Radio last hour. He’s having Marques Johnson on Tommorrow. Thomas called in as well hope we helped the cause and didn’t hurt it.
I can’t, because of my job, but if someone can get a copy of Larry Miller with Ian and Elise on KJR saying he’ll vote no and get it to 1280 The Zone they may play it tommorrow.
Worth a Shot.
April 16th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Anyone think that Murray/Cantwell might have maybe hinted that maybe there would be some congressional sniffing on the NBA?

this is awesome keep up the great work everyone!

April 16th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
“Murray has been personally lobbying some NBA owners to vote against the relocation, said spokeswoman Alex Glass. She did not say which owners Murray had contacted.”
Herb Kohl is right over there Maria, go talk to him.
No, you do it Patty, he sits near you on a sub-committee.
I’m not the one that had written “Maria Kohl” on my pee-chee
Knock it off Patty, that was a post-it note about shopping for a new belt.
What-e-v-e-r Maria, I’ll talk to him.

I’m glad that this finally got going as I think most NBA fans are definitely in your corner. We’d contacted you guys about creating something exactly like this about a month ago, but I guess you already had this in the works or something because we never heard back.
Either way, add another Blazers blog to your list, and we posted in support of you way back when.

I’m tempted to spit on some of these attempts to look like folks are doing something about the Sonics situation (that’s you I’m thinking about, Senators), but there is something stirring. The screws are turning on Stern and the NBA. Everything counts now…
April 16th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
“Anyone think that Murray/Cantwell might have maybe hinted that maybe there would be some congressional sniffing on the NBA?”
I thought the term “breach of trust” was an interesting choice of words for a letter to a monopoly.
April 16th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
I know a lot of people will complain that it is only a letter, but at least it’s something.
- See I have no problem with Murray and Cantwell doing a letter. There is really not much they can do in the State to impose laws on the Arena.
I’ve always sorta wondered if they would speak up. You hear about how Arlen Specter is talking to the NFL about the Patriots and all those people who wanted to get in on the Steroids scandal. Glad they finally made their voice’s heard.
April 16th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
I find it funny that people who do not understand the situation, says that the NBA is a business, and you have to detach emotion from the situation.
But doesn’t sport leagues say that they have a unique perspective, that they are not like a business. Can’t have it both ways.

Brian, Steve, Chris, Tyler, Jeremy, or whoever administrates this website: Do you think that this site is being hacked by some cyber-criminals that Clay Bennett or David Stern may have hired to take this site down? I’m wondering because the site has been down a lot and the forum, too, and this morning it brought up something strange when I clicked on the URL and it asked if I wanted to save it to my computer and it looked like it could have been a deadly virus. Did you guys see that? Do you have redundant back-ups? Do you know if anyone has been hacking into the site? Do you have an alternative site for us to go to if this site goes down and you can’t get it back up for awhile? This has happened more than once now, and I don’t know how long the site was down today, but I think it was more than a couple hours - maybe several hours. Do you know for sure what the cause was and why it’s happened on different days now?
The other day, the forum was still up - only the blog was down. Today it was both and it was different today because it brought up some file to save to my computer, whereas last time it just said “page not found” - it didn’t say that this time. I’m very concerned about this. I’ve seen other sites taken down by cyber criminals and it’s not pretty. Do you have your own team of propeller heads to counteract any hackers? I know that we are a big threat to David Stern and Clay Bennett - they feel very threatened by the power of the citizenry - true democracy in action. They don’t want us getting the word out any more and getting even more people involved - especially in other NBA cities. Don’t underestimate how desperate they are.

OTH…kind of wonder if the NBA will push forward with the vote just to make it look like public perception cannot change their process…
BTW…the Schultz story is now the most commented story on ESPN.com

- The conspiracy theorist in me thought the same thing over the last few weeks. However, I would place a bigger bet on the fact that the traffic to this site has increased expodentially over the last few weeks. We are most likely really taxing the servers right now…
April 16th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
the downtime is probably due to the increased traffic the site has been getting.. most of the errors seem to be database related.

“breach of trust” is a phrase that probably would catch a monopolists’ ear and the use of that phrase was probably an implied threat of more federal scrutiny. You go, girls!

Did you guys see that?”
Yes, I don’t know what it was, but don’t download it because I wouldn’t put it past someone to hack this site. They’ve done it before when we had that virus floating around on the front page for a little while.
“Do you have redundant back-ups? Do you know if anyone has been hacking into the site? Do you have an alternative site for us to go to if this site goes down and you can’t get it back up for awhile?”
No, probably, no.
“This has happened more than once now, and I don’t know how long the site was down today, but I think it was more than a couple hours - maybe several hours. Do you know for sure what the cause was and why it’s happened on different days now? ”
Traffic is exponentially higher than it was earlier in the season. We got a couple mentions in national media and traffic just totally exploded.
“The other day, the forum was still up - only the blog was down. Today it was both and it was different today because it brought up some file to save to my computer, whereas last time it just said “page not found” - it didn’t say that this time. I’m very concerned about this. ”
We are too, if you see anything awry do NOT download it … it isn’t anything we put up there and we hate pop-ups.
“Do you have your own team of propeller heads to counteract any hackers?”
I appreciate the thought that we are a crack team of Sonic fans deep in our Stern-proof bunker, but the truth is we’re not that high-tech, just ordinary fans like you. Except for Brian, who is actually Superman. Ssh!
“I know that we are a big threat to David Stern and Clay Bennett - they feel very threatened by the power of the citizenry - true democracy in action. They don’t want us getting the word out any more and getting even more people involved - especially in other NBA cities. Don’t underestimate how desperate they are. ”
I’m not underestimating how far they’d go to try and shut us up … we appreciate the concern. But just remember (and this goes for any Bennett and Stern lackeys reading this) if there’s one thing you can’t kill it’s a good idea. There are thousands behind us to take our place and with most of the NBA blogs and even traditional media out there lining up behind Seattle the people are speaking. If nothing else I personally am proud of that. peopl cared enough to bcome involved rather than sit back passively like 90% of Seattlites and just say “oh well, they’re gone.” That’s what sets these fans apart from the rest. They weren’t content to sit back and let the Mayor take the easy road. They weren’t content to get brushed off by Gov. Gregoire and Speaker Buttnugget and they’ll be remembering that come November. Mess with a bull, get the horns.

Hey guys. I’m back!
I think we need two strategies:
1. Continue to write blogs, newspapers, radio, etc.
but also
2. WE NEED TO COMMENT ON THE STORIES ALREADY POSTED. That’s our best way of making the stories more important (what blogger doesn’t want to make a bigger deal out of a story getting a lot of attention). Let’s comment them to death. You guys agree?
April 16th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Gas just mentioned the Blogs across the NBA thing on the radio
April 16th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Agreed, bro. Commenting keeps the story in the light.
April 16th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Hey Doc Brown. Whatever it is is also making your posts come in triplicate
April 16th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
It appears the local strategy going forward will be to tie Bennett and the NBA up in court on as many different fronts as possible 1) the City of Seattle on the lease, 2) Schultz on the sale of the team, 3) the season-ticket holders on the class-action suit, 4) perhaps the forthcoming conspiracy lawsuit, etc., for however long it takes to 1) secure the funding for a remodelled Key and 2) get Bennett to sell the team to Ballmer.
Works for me.
I still expect the BOG to approve the relocation, and I look forward to next week’s new lawsuit!
April 16th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Doc Brown… ha. Can we get in your Delorean and go back to 2006 and show Howie yesterday’s headlines?
April 16th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Has anyone down here in Salt Lake been able to get a hold of David Locke. I know he has a personal hate towards Bennett. All I get is stupid automatic replies from his email. Great Joshu on getting Jake Scott to listen.

Steve,
Thank you for your very thoughtful response to my concerns. I actually already downloaded those files before I thought that they could be viruses because I thought that it might be the most recent page of the blog or something like that. Then, I quickly realized that was probably the wrong thing to do, so my computer could blow up at any time. If you never hear from me again, try to track down what David Stern did to me. I wonder if anyone else downloaded the “Clay Bennett-David Stern” tech-bomb-malware-parasite-whatever file that came up when the site was down? The thing that really bothers me about that is that IF THIS WAS JUST A CRASH DUE TO EXTRA HEAVY TRAFFIC, A WORM FILE WOULD NOT HAVE COME UP WHEN WE TRIED TO ACCESS THE WEBSITE. I don’t see how we can reconcile the two events. It can’t just be a coincidence.
Oh, and a note to Laporbo - I know - the deadly triplicate virus is incredible. Here’s the thing about that: I noticed some other people doing it - either double or triple posts, and I thought that it made sense to get your post in both white and gray, because some people like one better than the other for reading. To me, it looks a lot better on white than gray, so I, at least want to get it on white, if not both, and sometimes I post it again so people will notice it. And, of course, you can’t always predict what color it’s going to print on - actually very rarely, but, if it’s really frowned upon, I can stop it (I think).

TB, I don’t know where my uncle put the Delorean. I wish I did. I’d fire it up & take a trip back and show these headlines to lots of people including Governor Gregoire, Greg Nickels, Howie, Wally, etc. I would do everything possible to prevent the sale of the Sonics to the OK City Corral Group.

I am crafting a detailed letter right now that covers EVERY aspect of the Sonics situation and I would like to email it to each NBA owner. It is a respectful letter and full of information that I believe David Stern and Clay Bennett have been keeping from the other owners.
Thanks guys!!

Since I’ve only been keeping a general eye on your guys’ ongoing struggle I don’t know if this idea has been floated by you yet, but can’t you get your Senators in the United States Congressional branches involved?
It seems to me that the greatest fear any national professional sporting league has is having its antitrust exemption revoked. I’m not positive, but I’m pretty sure the NBA has one just like the NFL and MLB. If Arlen Specter and that senator who was really into baseball (I forget his/her? name) can get bent out of shape over SpyGate and steroids respectively why can’t Murray and Cantwell do the same over having a team from their state ripped away?
I realize that an antitrust exemption probably hasn’t been revoked over such a reason ever before (otherwise how could any team relocate), however with the broad base of support you seem to have going abroad and locally you might be able to get something done. It’s a long shot but what’ve you got to lose?

While I don’t have Paul Allen’s (Portland TrailBlazer owner) personal e-mail. You may have success at sending a message to him via the Blazers site. He is after all a resident of Seattle and owns the Seahawks, so he may be a good person to target for Friday’s vote. All this talk about how much money they are losing and howto break
the lease is really annoying me. They knew the lease conditions
when they bought the team. The fact is, We as Sonic fans, have the
right to see our team through the next two years if nothing else. So
what if them scum sucking bastards lose money. We the fans also
have a vested interest in this team which has no price tag. Maybe
a class action suit of say a couple billion might make them think
differently….
