  6. Sonic Scott Says:

    GM: Ainge (this should be a one-man’s race)

    Defensive: KG

    Most Improved: Turkoglu

    Coach: Byron Scott (with Mo Cheeks a close second)

    MVP: Kobe

    ROY: KD (Nobody else is even close. I don’t care what you say about Horford or Scola. Put either of those guys on this Soncis team, and neither of them would’ve done anything half as impressive at the type of year Durant was able to carve out.) He’s going to be a flat-out baller!!!! LOVE THAT GUY!!!!

    Owner of the Year: Bennett (those emails were just brilliant Clay-Clay. )

  7. Menace Says:

    This is the toughest MVP race I’ve seen in a long time. Can’t really go wrong with KG, Lebron, Paul, or Kobe IMO. Arguments could also be made for Duncan and Dwight Howard. All are insanely good.

    MVP = KG

    Great teammate and a monster on both ends of the floor. Boston’s resurgence has been dramatic. They had the most wins in the league. Sure Ray and Pierce had a lot to do with it. But KG is the key piece that makes it all work.

  8. AK1984 Says:

    MOS: (Most Overrated Superstar)
    1. T-Mac
    2. Dirk
    3. AI
    4. J-Kidd
    5. D-Wade
    ” {sonicej}

    If there was an award titled “Most Overrated Superstar,” then it’s pretty telling that Tracy McGrady would most likely garner the dishonor. That doesn’t bode well at all for Kevin Durant, as it’s a damning glimpse into his overhyped future.

    Anyway, here’s my stab at it.

    NBA All-Overrated Team
    Al Jefferson
    Carlos Boozer
    Carmelo Anthony
    Tracy McGrady
    Jason Kidd

    Also, here’s another interesting lineup.

    NBA All-Overpaid Team
    Ben Wallace
    Zach Randolph
    Andrei Kirilenko
    Larry Hughes
    Stephon Marbury

    Well, there y’all have it.

  9. AK1984 Says:

    ROY: KD (Nobody else is even close. I don’t care what you say about Horford or Scola. Put either of those guys on this Soncis team, and neither of them would’ve done anything half as impressive at the type of year Durant was able to carve out.) He’s going to be a flat-out baller!!!! LOVE THAT GUY!!!!” {Sonic Scott}

    Kevin Durant would be FOURTH on my ballot for 2007-2008 NBA Rookie of the Year, with Thaddeus Young, Luis Scola, and Al Horford all finishing in front of him. Indeed, Durant hideous defense and abysmal on-court/off-court production places him solidly behind all three of those guys—there’s no denyin’ it!

  10. coffeestain Says:

    defensive player of the year
    slade gorten
    come back player of the year howie sargent schultz

  11. The South Florida Fan Says:

    As a Gator grad (Law School), I have a fondness for Al Horford. That being said, even I’m on the Kevin Durant for ROY platform.

    I’m assuming that doesn’t make anyone “bitter” here.

  12. AK1984 Says:

    Regarding the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award, it’s disgusting how stat-stuffing weakside help defenders get way more credit than stout man-to-man interior defenders.

    Apropos of defense, I’d take Joel Przybilla and Radoslav Nesterovic over Marcus Camby and Ben Wallace any day of the week. Hell, Camby and Wallace aren’t even the best one-on-one low-post defenders on their given teams; Eduardo Najera and Anderson Varejao are better than them, respectively.

    I’ve already gone over this topic numerous times, though, so there’s no point for me to rehash it over again with in-depth detail. It’s one of my more adamant positions, however.

  13. The South Florida Fan Says:

    And I’d also like to protest Dwyane Wade’s inclusion on the overrated list. The guy single-handedly won a championship!

    We even talk about it here: http://thesouthfloridafan.blogspot.com/2008/04/dwyane-wade-or-hanley-ramirez.html (Feel free to comment there with your opinions, btw)

  14. 5vs8 Says:

    D-Wade is great. Take a look at what happened to his supporting cast and you have to give him a pass on the blame for the Heats’ season.

    T-Mac also gets a pass. If the Rockets had Alston and Yao the Jazz series would be totally different. Scola is an over-matched rookie against that Utah front line.

    As for MVP. I think the MVP for the year should be the MVP of the finals. If you don’t win it all you probably do not deserve the MVP of the NBA for the year.

  15. fouledout Says:

    sorry guys, i know this is a sonics site, but i would have to pick al horford as the roy.. though it’s a real toe-to-toe battle between horford and kd, horford’s impact in atlanta this season is really big..

  16. Eric E Says:

    NBA All-Overpaid Team
    Ben Wallace
    Zach Randolph
    Andrei Kirilenko
    Larry Hughes
    Stephon Marbury

    What about Jerome James?? lol

  17. sonicej Says:

    South Florida,

    Dwyane Wade’s career path reminds me of an NFL RB.

    What Wade did to the Mavericks in 2006 was amazing! No matter what happens from here on out he will always have the ring.

    However, people are crazy if they think he is going to be that player ever again.

    Due to all of the contact and injuries he has already endured in his short career, I for one believe he is past his prime at the age of 26.

  18. sonicej Says:

    “T-Mac also gets a pass. If the Rockets had Alston and Yao the Jazz series would be totally different. Scola is an over-matched rookie against that Utah front line.”

    Lol…why don’t we just give T-Mac a pass for his career?

  19. The South Florida Fan Says:

    At least Kirilenko is a good player from time to time. How about albatross contracts like Brian Scalabrine or Ben Gadzuric?

  20. sonicej Says:

    How about Stevie Frances getting paid 13.4 mil to NOT play for the Blazers?

  21. sonicej Says:

    How about Stevie Frances getting paid 13.4 mil to NOT play for the Blazers?

  22. Seafan Says:

    Howard Schultz: Man of the Year

    HS: The Man who is saving the Seattle Supersonics

  23. The South Florida Fan Says:

    sonicej,

    I really hope you’re wrong (about D-Wade). The good news is that his rehab is coming along well. He never should have played last year, and thankfully they shut him down in time to recuperate for next season.

    I expect him to return to top form. Keep in mind…with Shaq basically not playing and the rest of the team hurt/sucking, the defenses were keying in on a 70% Wade all season. 2007-08 shouldn’t count against him. He’ll be back next year with a vengeance.

  24. AK1984 Says:

    NBA All-Overpaid Team
    Ben Wallace
    Zach Randolph
    Andrei Kirilenko
    Larry Hughes
    Stephon Marbury

    What about Jerome James?? lol” {sonicej}

    At least Kirilenko is a good player from time to time. How about albatross contracts like Brian Scalabrine or Ben Gadzuric?” {The South Florida Fan}

    I included more higher paid guys in my list, but Jerome James and Dan Gadzuric are fair choices — as neither of them deserve their mid-level deals — yet, when push came to shove, Ben Wallace beat out both of those guys due to his enormous salary.

    I’ll rescind my selection of Andrei Kirilenko, however, since he’s still relatively productive despite his exorbitant contract. At this point in time, Bobby Simmons will replace Kirilenko—even though Rashard Lewis should supplant him in a couple of years.

  25. sonicej Says:

    South Florida,

    I hope I’m wrong about Wade as well. I like the guy. I’ve alway’s thought of him as the anti-T-Mac in that he would rather throw down than shoot a jump shot. I respect the hell out of him for that. We’ll see.

    BTW, what’s the deal with Riles? Is he going to stick around as coach or what?

  26. The South Florida Fan Says:

    I think Riley waits to see who the draft pick is. If he likes him, then he’ll stay,

    There’s no doubting Riley’s coaching abilities, but he was horrible this year, and his decisions are 100% self-serving (hence, throwing Stan Van Gundy under the bus)

  27. 5vs8 Says:

    T-Mac played well this season, but gets no pass on his career. He left it all out there in game 2 vs jazz though it wasn’t enough.

    GO HOWIE! I might get a cup of coffee.

  28. AK1984 Says:

    How about Stevie Frances getting paid 13.4 mil to NOT play for the Blazers?” {sonicej}

    I discounted guys who were either retired, bought out, sufferring from a career-ending injury, waived under the amnesty provision, or released like Shawn Bradley, Chris Webber, Darius Miles, Michael Finley, and Steve Francis.

  29. 5vs8 Says:

    KD is the ROY far and away!!!!

    When a rookie gets 20 ppg on a team that is being sabotaged you have to give it to him.

  30. AK1984 Says:

    NBA All-Robbery First Team
    Adonal Foyle (Released)
    Chris Webber (Released/Retired)
    Darius Miles (Career-Ending Injury)
    Michael Finley (Amnesty)
    Steve Francis (Released/Season-Ending Injury)

    NBA All-Robbery Second Team
    Shawn Bradley (Retired)
    Jerome Williams (Amnesty)
    Keith Van Horn (Semi-Retired)
    Aaron McKie (Amnesty/Semi-Retired)
    Bobby Sura (Career-Ending Injury)

  31. sonicej Says:

    I think the most impressive part of KD’s game this year was his D. Anyone remember what he did to guys like M. Redd this year?

  32. AK1984 Says:

    I think the most impressive part of KD’s game this year was his D. Anyone remember what he did to guys like M. Redd this year?” {sonicej}

    Dude, you’ve got to be kidding here.

    Kevin Durant is atrociously lax on man-to-man defense, doesn’t rotate properly as a weakside help defender, lacks the speed and agility to guard opposing wing players, and doesn’t possess the necessary strength to defend forwards.

    All in all, Durant plays soft, uninspired defense.

  33. Zonics Says:

    CP3 all the way,, nothing short of amazing.
    Durant ROY for sure.. hands down this kid is amazing. He sealed the deal when he clutched up with his huge OT 3’s
    DHoward Dfence

  34. SeeJ Says:

    Wait a second… is this a thread about basketball?!?!

  35. Zonics Says:

    Rookie of the year Durant on NEW Sonics vid.. check this out…

  36. Otto Says:

    KD all the way!

  37. AK1984 Says:

    Along with Kevin Durant being placed fourth on my ballot for 2007-2008 NBA Rookie of the Year — with Thaddeus Young, Luis Scola, and Al Horford all finishing soundly in front of him — Jeff Green didn’t even earn garner one iota of consideration from me for being placed on the 2007-2008 NBA All-Rookie First Team or the 2007-2008 NBA All-Rookie Second Team.

    In all reality, Green was outperformed by fellow small forwards Young, Al Thornton, and Jamario Moon — as well as Jared Dudley and Wilson Chandler, who both played well upon getting increased playing time to end the season — throughout their respective rookie campaigns. Green, who’s lauded with undue praise from homers around here, is a fatally flawed combo forward.

  38. SonicBoom Says:

    AK1984 i live in Philly and get to watch all of the Sixers games, and Thaddeus Young is the steal of the draft, but not ROY! He really came on strong 3 months after the season started, and the award is for Rookie of the Year not rookie of the best 2 months! Durant is ROY and horford is the only one with a legit case, but Kevin carried this team the whole season, and got better and better as the year progressed! KD=ROY for OUR SEATTLE SONICS!!

  39. Sonic Scott Says:

    Why is AK so down on Durant? Dude, did you even watch the 2nd half of the season??? Thadeus Young? Come on, man. Drop the pipe. He’s a good solid rookie, but not the ROY. It’s KD, hands down.

    It’s a good thing you’re not voting.

  40. Steve Says:

    Thaddeus Young LOL.

    Cmon Anthony. You know ROYs all about the counting stats.

  41. Myk Says:

    with Thaddeus Young, Luis Scola, and Al Horford all finishing soundly in front of him

    - I know for a fact that I would sure want my 6′10″ PF that only shoots shots from the paint to have a .498 FG%. I’m actually surprised that you didn’t put Durant behind Carl Landry, Joakim Noah, Jamario Moon, Julian Wright…I mean if you are going to go out of your way to make a lame point of how much you don’t like him you might as well go all in.

  42. AK1984 Says:

    Why is AK so down on Durant? Dude, did you even watch the 2nd half of the season??? Thadeus Young? Come on, man. Drop the pipe. He’s a good solid rookie, but not the ROY. It’s KD, hands down.

    It’s a good thing you’re not voting.” {Sonic Scott}

    Thaddeus Young is a well-rounded two-way player who helps his team win games, which is noted by his oustanding on-court/off-court statistical production.

    The same can’t be said for Kevin Durant, whose improved field-goal shooting doesn’t negate his lack of progress on defense.

    Thaddeus Young LOL.

    Cmon Anthony. You know ROYs all about the counting stats.” {Steve}

    Yeah, Kevin Durant will definitely with the award.

    Nonetheless, it’s somewhat odd that Al Hoford is getting a substantial amount of press for being the alternative choice—especially since Thaddeus Young actually deserves the acclaim for being an unselfish two-way player who’s played a huge role on a playoff team.

    Hell, Young should get more publicity from the media.

  43. SonicScott Says:

    AK,

    You point out KD’s lack of defense, but ROY is based more on offensive ability. You’re right, Durant has ALOT to learn on how to play “D,” but that will come in time. He was being asked to score last season, and he did that in impressive fashion.

    You said Young helped his team win games. How many games would the Sonics have won WITHOUT Durant last year? We’re talking single digits.

    For a 19-year-old kid on a terrible team, with awful coaching, and a ton of off-court distractions, KD was a true professional who proved he’s going to be in the same class as Kobe or Lebron very soon.

  44. Menace Says:

    “Kevin Durant is atrociously lax on man-to-man defense, doesn’t rotate properly as a weakside help defender, lacks the speed and agility to guard opposing wing players, and doesn’t possess the necessary strength to defend forwards.”

    We only have one player on our entire team that does those things…..Collison. AK how can you be so critical of his D yet so silent about Ray, Rashard, Luke etc etc etc. Rashard was one of the worst on the ball defenders I’ve ever seen. You continually go to extremes…..he isn’t that bad. He isn’t good…..but he is far from the worst. KD wasn’t drafted for defense.

    Why do you continue to mask your admitted hatred of his “hype” with “he is the worst defender”. Not sure how you can be a sonics fan with our history of poor defensive play.

    Keep it in perspective folks. AK hates Durant, McGrady, and Anthony. Loves Pryzbilla, Thaddeus Young, The Collins twins, Nesterovic, Varejao etc etc etc. How’s Shelden Williams doing?

    Its his thing to be alternative to the masses.

  45. Menace Says:

    “Apropos of defense, I’d take Joel Przybilla and Radoslav Nesterovic over Marcus Camby and Ben Wallace any day of the week. Hell, Camby and Wallace aren’t even the best one-on-one low-post defenders on their given teams; Eduardo Najera and Anderson Varejao are better than them, respectively.”

    I think most people around the world would disagree with you.

    Pryzbilla and Nesterovic are stiffs.

  46. Kitcat Says:

    Is ROY going to be announced today? I believe last year’s ROY was named on April 23rd.

  47. Myk Says:

    Thaddeus Young is a well-rounded two-way player who helps his team win games, which is noted by his oustanding on-court/off-court statistical production.

    - Just keep in mind everyone…this statistic is only important when it proves AK’s point. The fact that Luke Ridnour was +3.2 and Earl Watson was -1.2 in the same exact statistic does not mean Ridnour is better than Watson because there is some other statistic that AK will use to prove that point. When that other statistic does not prove his point with another player we will be able to find one that does…

    Just gotta look hard enough.

  48. Myk Says:

    The fact that Ray Allen now is on one of the best defenses of all time sort of proves me that defense is something that cannot be judged on a player by player basis.

  49. Hambone Says:

    ROY: KD, of course. I think he deserves it, and that he’ll win it.

    MVP: Kobe will win, methinks. But I don’t think Boston would be anywere near where they are now without KG. He’s my MVP.

  50. AK1984 Says:

    AK how can you be so critical of his D yet so silent about Ray, Rashard, Luke etc etc etc. Rashard was one of the worst on the ball defenders I’ve ever seen. You continually go to extremes…..he isn’t that bad. He isn’t good…..but he is far from the worst. KD wasn’t drafted for defense. ” {Menace}

    I insult Rashard “Charmin” Lewis and Luke “The Golden Boy” Ridnour all the time, so you’re totally wrong on that account. In fact, I was one of the first people who constantly attacked Lewis for his worthless defense and inability to pass out of double teams.

    I think most people around the world would disagree with you.

    Pryzbilla and Nesterovic are stiffs.” {Menace}

    Radoslav Nesterovic has been tearing it up lately for the Toronto Raptors, as he’s finally gotten the chance to be a major part of the team’s offense. As it is, neither Nesterovic nor Joel Przybilla are stiffs.

    Keep it in perspective folks. AK hates Durant, McGrady, and Anthony. Loves Pryzbilla, Thaddeus Young, The Collins twins, Nesterovic, Varejao etc etc etc. How’s Shelden Williams doing?” {Menace}

    I’ve already conceded in detail that Shelden Williams is a bust, with stated reasons for why he’s failed in the NBA.

  51. AK1984 Says:

    The fact that Ray Allen now is on one of the best defenses of all time sort of proves me that defense is something that cannot be judged on a player by player basis.” {MyK}

    Unlike piss-poor defenders like Kevin Durant, Rashard Lewis, and Luke Ridnour, Ray Allen is a least satisfactory on that end of the court. Allen has meshed well within the Boston Celtics’ top-notch defense, too, which is a testament to his overall abilities.

  52. Menace Says:

    Didn’t Durant did lead the team in blocks and steals? Doesn’t make him a good defender…..but that seems pretty amazing for someone who is supposedly so “piss poor” at D.

    Is he the worst defensive player in the L AK?

  53. Menace Says:

    Lets put it this way AK. You know my opinion on Mo Sene. You continually harping about Durant’s D……would be like me continually griping about Sene’s lack of a 3 pt shot/ball handling skills.

  54. AK1984 Says:

    Didn’t Durant did lead the team in blocks and steals? Doesn’t make him a good defender…..but that seems pretty amazing for someone who is supposedly so “piss poor” at D.” {Menace}

    Those stats don’t truly measure one’s defensive prowess, which I’m sure that Crow can explain in further detail than myself.

    Lets put it this way AK. You know my opinion on Mo Sene. You continually harping about Durant’s D……would be like me continually griping about Sene’s lack of a 3 pt shot/ball handling skills.” {Menace}

    You, Myk, and I all perpetually mocked Mouhamed Sene.

    Anyhow, the inconsistency with your analogy is that Sene is an out-’n'-out bust, while Kevin Durant is an all-around good player. My argument is that Durant will soon become a star player (e.g., Tracy McGrady, Carmelo Anthony, et al.), but won’t be productive enough to succeed as the primary option on a championship contender. Yet, on the other hand, there’s folks who foolishly believe that Durant will one day transform into a transcendent superstar — such as Dwight Howard, LeBron James, and Chris Paul, who all definitely fit that description — which, in my objective opinion, won’t be the ultimate outcome for him.

    That’s my stance.

  55. Sonic Scott Says:

    AK is drunk.

  56. AK1984 Says:

    AK is drunk.” {Sonic Scott}

    Nope …

  57. Menace Says:

    “My argument is that Durant will soon become a star player (e.g., Tracy McGrady, Carmelo Anthony, et al.), but won’t be productive enough to succeed as the primary option on a championship contender.”

    We won 20 games this year. Is that comparision a negative?

    “Anyhow, the inconsistency with your analogy is that Sene is an out-’n’-out bust, while Kevin Durant is an all-around good player.”

    You must be drunk. “Durant is an all-around good player”???? My point is that you continually attack his weakness. Attack something that isn’t expected.

    To continually gripe about Durants D is like……..slamming Luke Ridnour for not being a great dunker/finisher in the lane. Or bashing Rob Swift for not being a 3 pt threat.

    Durant wasn’t drafted for his D. If that was your expectation…..you were mis informed.
