Henry Abbott for Mayor!!
Posted on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 at 8:49 pm by SpeedCat
Ahh, well we needed a new thread anyways!
“At some point, after the funeral, you stop putting so much energy into being mad that someone died, and start going about the business of making life as good as it can be without them. This is, I guess, that day.”
Yes indeed. I need to hear this advice as much as anyone.
Henry goes on to say he’s thrilled for OKC fans, a feeling which I will probably never be able to share. But we should not blame the citizens of OKC for what happened to us & our team. Wish them the best, and move on. That said, I cannot bring myself to watch their team or follow them in any way.
Love all you guys & gals on this board. What a great community we have. And I know we have the respect of some of the best sports minds in this country. I can’t say I have regrets. You guys have taught me much.
Will I have to become a soccer fan? I don’t have a problem supporting the Blazers, but it just isn’t and will never be the same thing. Seahawks are great, but again it’s no replacement. A strange hole has appeared in my life, don’t know exactly how to fill it.
Meanwhile if there are any angst sessions or radical actions scheduled, please let me know.
I hereby dedicate this song, called “Baby Baby Baby”, to David Stern, Howard Schultz, and Greg Nickels:

I got one radical action. Help put the Save our Sonics saga on Wikipedia. We need to get the story out there and the fact that we dont have a wikipedia page is pathetic. I just put up a paragraph but if anyone still reads this stuff, help us out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Save_our_sonics

Thanks Speedcat, Brian, Steve, Mr. Baker…everybody….this has been some kind of ride. Mr. Abbott makes a good point, it is kinda the road I have taken. Luckily football season is keeping me busy, unfortunately, the season ends just as the NBA season gets going. What are you gonna do, right?

GO BLAZERS!
September 4th, 2008 at 10:06 am
Fill the hole with drugs, alcohol, and women.
The day the Sonics were purchased, I called and got on the waiting list for Seahawks tickets. I kept my Supes season tickets until the end, and ironically this current Seahawks season I got through. I think it was in the cards all along. I am trying to move on and fill the hole with another sport. I love football and am thrilled to have Seahawks tickets but it’s a totally different ball game and can never fill the basketball void. GO HAWKS

and for those still looking to support an NBA team with an owner of integrity:
http://www.iamatrailblazersfan.com/
Note: any team not named the Trailblazers or Mavericks has an owner that supported the Sonics moving to OKC. Keept that in mind when you’re jumping onto the ship of the Hornets, Warriors, or anyone else.

A strange hole has appeared in my life, don’t know exactly how to fill it
- I would suggest taking that time and devoting it to coaching youth basketball…its a pretty fulfilling experience.
and for those still looking to support an NBA team with an owner of integrity:
- LOL…ya Paul Allen did soooooooooooooooooooo much to help in the saga. I remember all those interviews he did explaining how this was a bad situation and how hard he tried to help out in this situation.
Haven’t you found a Blazer site yet to go spout your senseless musings?? Or, did they not want you either??
September 4th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
Seattle Sonics fans who are going to support any other team are mindless, convictionless lemmings.
Actually, they are the rats in the maze that mindlessly hunt cheese in every corner. All their brains can do is think ‘get cheese’.
Well, Dr. Stern moved the cheese to a different corner hoping the rats will sniff around every other nook and cranny to find the it. Eventually they will find the cheese and enjoy it but they will be cursed to live in the maze hunting cheese and being led around by a-holes for their short life.
The truly wise rats might think a few times about the new cheese location but will eventually stop, look up at Dr. Stern, flip him the bird and jump out of the maze. They will go on to find other food and be free of the maze and the evil Docs.
Clint and others, go find your cheese. Or to make sense for you… corner, wall, nail, wall, corner, “Stern give cheese now”, wall, turd in corner, columbia river, portland…CHEESE!!

The team in OKC will forever be called the Clap from down under.

Ha. Nice one, Fed Up.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
RIP …looks like this site, as the Sonics, is dead.
September 4th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Fed Up, I agree with your analogy. The NBA is D-E-A-D to me….. well, at least until Stern is gone…. or dead.
Is it wrong to hope that something terrible happens to Stern???

A strange hole has appeared in my life, don’t know exactly how to fill it.
*****
Couldn’t have said it better myself. I think I’ll take up graffiti and heroin abuse just to spite the city. haha.

“A strange hole has appeared in my life, don’t know exactly how to fill it. ”
Exactly. I will watch football especially the Seahawks every Sunday, I may support the Blazers, I will appreciate the people who support Soccer, I will try to find other things to do with my winters and springs but NOTHING will replace the Sonics. Ever.

“Seattle Sonics fans who are going to support any other team are mindless, convictionless lemmings.”
FYI this is your opinion not a fact. Just because you choose not to support another team does not in any way mean that its wrong for other Sonics fans to.

Would love to hear from Brian Robinson one more time….

Where to begin?
Those of you who wish to follow the Blazers that’s your perogative. However IMHO Paul Allen’s in part to blame for some of the problems the NBA has. Before the luxury tax was implemented the Blazers had one of if not the highest payroll in the NBA.
I’ll probably content myself with college ball and take in the occasional NBA game that may be on ESPN or TNT. Oh and I’ll probably catch the finals too.
Sure college players aren’t as talented as those in the NBA but at least they play a team game.
I was headed that way anyhow before the Sonics were sold to Bubba Bennett. Don’t think I watched a single NBA game during the 2005/2006 season.
Decided to buy a Sonics ticket package for the 2006/2007 season as a way of showing support for keeping the team in town. Bought a half season ticket the following season when the Sonics drew #2 in the lottery. This was before Ray Allen was traded and Bennett began disassembling the team.
One thing I believe we’ve all found out is how little the fans really mean to the NBA. Corporate dollars do but not the average fan. Try as we might there was little any of us could do.
It’ll be interested to see if Seattle is successfull in getting tax authorization from the legislature this year for fixing Key Arena. If not it may well be that Frank Chopp is the biggest culprit in the Sonics departure not Howard Schultz, Clay Bennett or David Stern as much as I despise those three.
September 4th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
sure is quiet on this site…hopefully something starts happening…is ballmer still interested?
September 4th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
well we could kick something off basketball related, im hangin for the college season, hoping wake forest gets back to the ncaa tournament (yes i said wake forest) i refuse to acknowledge the nba so its college. who else is hanging for the college season? and who do you support?
September 4th, 2008 at 8:52 pm
I’ll never stop watching college ball. Go Zags.

“Seattle Sonics fans who are going to support any other team are mindless, convictionless lemmings.”–Fed Up.
Look Fed Up, here’s what bad ownership over a number of years does. Mr. Sonic gets dissed and goes elsewhere. The most popular player who is a great community leader in Allen gets traded. Season ticket holders like Alexi are told that they don’t matter. A player who wants to play out his career in Seattle in Payton gets traded.
Meanwhile, Portland lands Mr. Sonic, Brandon Roy, and Martell Webster? No wonder some people are experiencing an identity crisis and want to root for another team.
This whole time the message seems to be love your team, but, hate your owner. Well, damn it, I hope that the next team has ownership that respects its community, the players who give back to it, and the fans.
Stern probably hates the small market teams; it’s his nightmare if the Blazers make the Finals in any way, shape, or form.
September 4th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Here’s hoping for a Memphis/Utah Finals, gift wrapped for David Stern (they wouldn’t really fix a Lakers-Celtics final now would they??)
September 4th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
Don’t think we need to worry about the site buster probs anymore. BTW take the espn poll on there NBA page. 80 to 20% favor Seattle SuperSonics over OKC Thunder Nationwide.

In reading these posts it triggered some nostalgia and a question.
Back when this site first opened(yeah, I go that far back as downtown) it was moderated by Kevin Pelton. It was a fantastic site with some very intelligent basketball opinions. I refer to it as the golden age of sonicscentral.
When Kevin Pelton got offered an internship with the Sonics he explained he couldn’t post his personal opinions anymore becasue of the conflict with his now employer, which was a fair decision on his part. I think he still wrote once in a bluemoon under a different handle though for anoniminity sake. Sonicscentral almost went down and out and suffered for a while until being rescued from the doldrums.
My question, strictly out of curiousity, is does anyone know if he relocated to Oklahoma or is he staying put in Seattle? I would love to get the originator of sonicscentral’s thoughts and ideas on the whole ordeal.
As for everyone else, all I can say in support is that I survived the relocation of my Vancouver Grizzlies and I’m confident that every one of you will eventually put this behind you and move on with your lives.
I make the drive down once in a while to Seattle and you people should be thankful you live in such a great city with a multitude of interesting things to do. Seattle, and the surrounding area, are so much bigger than just the Sonics basketball team, although they were an incredibly important part of the fabric of the city.
And for the record, I believe you’ll see pro basketball again in Seattle, although it will probably take quite a while.

Funny, I tried going to nba.com to see this poll mentioned by RmcD and my browser came back with a screen saying “What is this NBA you speak of? We were unable to find it.”
September 4th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
I see no reason why this site should die, also I think that once hoops gets started again I suspect that we can actually engage in some HOops talk again. Basically its been legal drama. where is the good ole sports chatter?
I said it before and I will say it again RUDY FERNANDEZ is a basketball god. He will dominate. thats what I think..
September 4th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
DK, as of August 10, 2008, Pelton said over at the grown-ups table that he has no plans to relocate.
(that’s right KP, I’m a lurker).
September 5th, 2008 at 8:52 am
Thanks Mr. Baker. If Kevin Pelton isn’t going to relocate I imagine he’s free to speak his mind. Like I said, I’d love to get his viewpoint on the teams demise.

- I would image that as a part of everyone’s severance package they had to sign a NDA…it will be interesting to see how this site morphs once the season starts.

Hey Griff - great job on wikipedia. I’ll see if I can find some material, or someone who has the time to do updates there.

I cleaned up a couple of typos on the SOS Wiki. A lot more to be added there. I don’t have the time at the moment, but would be happy to help (eventually).

this site can’t die. we need to concentrate our sfforts to getting the renovation of the key done and getting another team called the sonics here asap! the stakes are too high to dwell on the past and i think we have could have the opportunity to look to the fans of cleveland as an example when they got their browns back. keep the sonic fever alive. even though they are not playing doesn’t mean the spirit has to die.

The night of the OKC home opener…
Flaming bags of sh!t on the footsteps of Key Arena, City Hall and Starbucks headquarters. I think this is an idea that could gain some steam. I say we all should meet at a mexican restaurant the night before to discuss strategy.
September 5th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Kaczaraba said college basketball has garnered better ratings than Sonics games in the past few years, and that was directly related to Bennett’s purchase and subsequent gutting of the team, along with the relocation threats. Sonics viewers became disenchanted with a downtrodden team, and FSN Northwest hopes to gain back those viewers with a different product.
But the Portland Trail Blazers won’t be that product. Several industry sources said FSN Northwest won’t air Blazers games in the Seattle area.

I agree, but it appears this site is on life support right now. Maybe when basketball season starts things will pick up. I for one sure would love to hear an update from Brian, on what’s going on recently.
I’d like to think that silence is good for now. I’m still in denial that the Sonics are really gone, I see the silly OKC logo, and Seattle missing from nba.com, but it’s still hard to believe. I’m so glad I went to the last Sonics game in Seattle, to be part of that emotion with the Save Our Sonics chants was unforgettable. David Stern and the rest of the D*$# heads may have stolen our team, but they can’t steal our memories.
Hopefully, one day we can start new ones with Sonics Version 2.0 I know many people are done with the NBA, and I can understand why, but I’m too involved with basketball to give that up. I only hope one day, I will be able to see a Sonics team host the Thunder and kick their a*#@*!
September 5th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
James, this link is dedicated to you my friend.. I still get chills.. Glad I went to see it in person.

SOS lives! We are like OB1 Kanobi. IF you strike us down we will only become more powerful. Long live the sonics. I will shame myself so my “possible” future kids can say Dad what happened in 08-10. There seems to be missing stats for the Sonics. and that’s when I will explain that life can be a bitch sometimes but you have to wake up the next day rub some dirt on it and keep moving.
September 6th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
We should try to organize an outing at a Husky game sometime this season…I suppose, that is, if anyone is still checking the site in a couple months and cares to put it together. Seems like it would be a shame for us not to have one last get-together given how often a lot of us check the site. Commiserate one last time. Maybe get together at Ozzie’s or something and berate the Thunder if they get a national TV date…ha.

Yes! Steam indeed! Full steam ahead, captain DBF.
