Posted on Sunday, August 30th, 2009 at 9:28 pm by Adam Brown
The Sonicsgate team made this video for the Massive Monkees using footage from their time as the Sonics Boom Squad. Man these guys are unbelievably good. They were a staple at every Sonics home game.

There are 121 days left for Clay Bennett to escape the remaining debt to the city. Just a reminder that the new elected officials in November will have about a month or so. Unless there is something that we don’t know what is going on behind the doors?
The city should have not fold but too late, however, I am glad that that idiot mayor will not continue as a mayor after November election.

no special session, kohl-welles just wrote this to me:
“It is looking as though we will not have a special session and therefore cannot go back to address SB 6116 before the 2010 session. If the economic situation takes a serious downturn, we could be forced to go back to session to deal with the economic situation.”
September 1st, 2009 at 7:29 pm
So what is that BR is talking about? Progress for a privately financed arena?
September 1st, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Too bad about Murray not running. I’d support him in a heartbeat over Mallahan & McGinn.
Peter, that really sucks if “no special session” is true. I think we all knew it’s been a longshot but I still hold out some hope that sense will return to the senseless. Perhaps I’m just a helpless optimist.

We did our job. We kept this issue in the news. Look at all the press we received and now till the end of the year people will be buzzing about the Sonicsgate film with national recognition already starting. It all sets up a big announcement at the beginning of next year. I remain cautiously optomistic.

If you go to Bumbershoot this weekend check out the poster exhibit. My friend Dan Smith is the curator.
For Bumbershoot, Smith looked to today’s leading post-Communist Russian poster artists, much influenced (like their U.S. peers) by such forces as modern advertising and street art.
In the online guide to the show, Smith places posters by Moscow designers and such Seattleites as Brad Kleinsmith, Michael Strassburger and Chelsea Conboy side by side, to play off contrasts and accent similarities in color, type styles, and photo and drawn images.

Damn my best friend for getting married out of state that weekend! Ah well - I’ll have to DL it and watch it during the reception
September 2nd, 2009 at 2:49 pm
No, it was not a sentence. My browser crashed, when I recalled the page the text looked ok, but did not post ok.
Now that the chains of KeyArena that have been holding back a privately funded arena from being built we will hear rumors and see PowerPoint slides.
The closer we get to the end if the year, the more the media will start asking “what now”.
September 2nd, 2009 at 4:14 pm
i would prefer a new arena, and private funding is the way to go. the only problem with that is the sonics name/logo/colors. the settlement clearly mentions keyarena being renovated as the conditions for us getting the name back. so i guess we may have to settle for a entirely new franchise, with a new name and logo. the flip side is that we could get the nhl also.
September 2nd, 2009 at 4:17 pm
i think we could be in a charlotte type situation, because if we don’t renovate the key, bennett has a legal case to the name. new arena or not.
September 2nd, 2009 at 4:30 pm
I know someone on here has said it before, but money talks and Bennett doesn’t seem to want the name anyways (and fans in OKC dont’ seem to either). They are building their own repoire with the Thunder team and I think they would want to distance themselves from the Sonics as much as possible.
September 2nd, 2009 at 4:32 pm
Also, call me a sell-out or whatever you want to, but I’m a basketball fan first and I’d still root for the Seattle Bobcats/Grizzlies/Hornets/Kings/whatever

They may not want the name but the history including the championship trophy and banners are a different story. Under the arrangement made by our dearly soon-to-be-departed baleen whale of a mayor OKC gets to keep both of those things. On his last day in office I might send him a big letter A, not for effort, but because he took the A out of Seattle … he’s the mayor of Settle.
September 2nd, 2009 at 5:22 pm
So the Ballmer group’s offer does expire at the end of this year?
September 2nd, 2009 at 6:43 pm
i thought okc only got “replica” banners and trophies, with the real ones being held indefintely until keyarena was renovated. the settlement never says when the key has to be renovated to get the name, logos, banners, and trophies, just that it needs to be renovated. it says in the settlement the deadline at the end of the year is for the 30 mil only, not for anything else. it doesnt mention ballmer by name, just says “new team owners”. my understanding of it is all okc gets is the stat history and replica trophies/banners, and we get the name/colors/logos/jerseys and the original banners/trophies.
September 2nd, 2009 at 7:22 pm
its the NBA, all we are guaranteed is being shafted. im quite sure that supreme chancellor stern will find a way to screw us sonics fans even more over the name/logo etc.
September 2nd, 2009 at 8:15 pm
It is that time of year again, time for the Seattle Times Guest Guesser. The College and Pro Football game where you pick the winners of a select group of games.
Last year I finished the year ranked #114 out of about 4 to 5 thousand people. The key to my success is that I do not watch much football, not an entire game. I do not follow the sport. The crowd is usually right, they collectively follow the sport and indicate the most likely winner. But, if is really close I might take the slight underdog at home. That is it.
Good luck football heads!

September 2nd, 2009 at 8:29 pm
baker, what do you think would happen to the sonics name/logos/banners/trophies/history if a privately funded new arena goes up and we get a team? it seems like nickels made the agreement to tie everything to a renovated key arena to SHUT OUT A PRIVATE ARENA. that said i think it is important we get the positions of mallahan and mcginn in case a key arena solution is possible with new leadership. it may be our only chance to at least get the name and colors back.
September 2nd, 2009 at 8:55 pm
The only chance the nba has to return to the Seattle market is with the return of the SuperSonic’s name, colors and logo, banners, trophies and history. The nba might even have to forget about a relocation fee and any fees associated with a team opting out of their current lease.

I believe the NBA can do what it wants no matter what it ever said before. Case in point: A remodeled Key was clearly out of the question when Clay was touting the new palace he wanted, but after the settlement Stern and the NBA changed its tune. Likewise, if Ballmer purchases a team in January, right after the deadline for approving the remodel and starts construction in Bellevue for a new venue, who’s to tell the NBA that we can’t have our logo, name and colors back?
BTW, OKC comparing “their team” to the Lakers is ridiculous. L.A. won 10 championships on their own after the 5 that were won when the team was in Minneapolis, so it’s not like they are clinging tenaciously to some irrelevant era to them when there were wooden baskets, 2 handed set shots and no one over 7 feet.

i don’t know about the rest of you, but the sonics name, logo, history, colors, etc is EXTREMELY important to me. the league isn’t using those things with the thunder anyway. why would it matter. i’m not sure a new arena or renovate key has any affect on that. it probably depends on the dedication of the new seattle/nba owner to obtain those rights. the people of power in our region need to get in bed with stern. as we’ve learned stern can do anything he wants and he’ll satisfy the interests of his friends.
September 3rd, 2009 at 2:21 pm
i don’t know about the rest of you, but the sonics name, logo, history, colors, etc is EXTREMELY important to me.
- Count me in the minority that doesn’t care about the history…history isn’t something that can be bought or sold. No one who ever follows the NBA (at least for the next 40 years) will consider the 79 title an OKC title…and they will never be able to remove the images from my head of the mid 90s Sonics.
History isn’t a tangible asset that can be bought or sold.
As for the colors and team name…im sure if Ballmer says “hey I will only buy a team if we get that stuff back” that Stern will make sure it gets done.

I am back in Seattle now and will work to push my Chinese partner solution with the local folks.
Yes, I live in Seattle but travel to China at least once a month and been doing business there for 20 years. I was actually in Beijing when I sent that last update. I will travel back mid-month. As to what I am smoking, well currently, it is a beef brisket in the backyard!
I don’t know if I can help make this China deal happen but I know we have a shot. My talks went very well and I feel more confident after this last trip. Look at the Chinese ownership of the Cavs! I am just a local guy with China cred, I am doing my part. We have a lot of local talent here that can help in different ways. Look at the Sonicsgate guys after all!

so it sounds like the key HAS to be renovated to get all the name/logos/etc back.
September 5th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
Somewhere in the document I think it mentions new or remodeled KeyArena at Seattle Center. I think that reference is to the funding and the $30 million clause.
But, yes, the city all along made it clear that it either wanted an arena solution at Seattle Center or the team completely gone from Washington State.
The name/colors/history is minor leverage to force a future solution into something at Seattle Center.
So, a new suburban arena might not have a team named the Sonics in it. Though, that name/history/colors has a value to Bennett and Seattle an I am sure both could agree to sell that to a new owner in Bellevue.
To be clear about Seattle Center and the word “remodel”, 90% of KeyArena could be ripped down and have a new-ish arena called KeyArena built would likely be enough to retain the name/history/colors.
September 5th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
How about a new privately funded arena at Seattle Center?
Doubt the Storm would get the same lease they have with the city.
The Science Center is not the city’s, they do not own the Space Needle, both still thought of as part of Seattle Center. Why not the KeyArena footprint?
September 5th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
I think they should tear down memorial stadium and build the new arena there. It makes the most logical sense to put the arena there.
We buy a team, get them here immediately, let them play out the 2-3 years in the Key that it would take to build the arena.
Turn the Key into some sort of amphitheater to compete with the Gorge and White River for summer concerts. And maybe hold some outdoor exhibition games there.
September 5th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
“Turn the Key into some sort of amphitheater to compete with the Gorge and White River for summer concerts. ”
Bad idea. A Seattle Center venue will not be even remotely competitive for big summer package tour dollars with the Gorge or White River. Even with a revamped arena/amphitheatre the site does not have enough parking, enough camping, enough anything. It’s not about competing with pre-existing and better venues, it’s about finding the niche that’s currently unfilled and filling it. You can’t compete with venues like Red Rocks or the Gorge … they are what they are and it’s as much about seeing the location as it is the band.
Ideally a new Center site should be to host shows that are too big for the Paramount yet not big enough for a stadium … say shows in the 5K-15K range. What’s the problem with that analysis? Paul Allen already beat the city to it with Qwest Events Center. Not the greatest indoor concert venue but it’s convienently located, has plenty of parking and is easily reachable from the Eastside…
What’s the answer? A partially covered amphitheatre under the Space Needle, where Memorial Stadium is now. That would provide something we don’t currently have in Seattle - an outdoor concert venue in a pretty unique location. Think Ravinia in Chicago. That’s EXACTLY what this city needs. Big amphitheatre surrounded by gorgeous park space.

I love how Oklahoma’s title hopes are already done.
September 6th, 2009 at 11:54 am
The KeyArenas claim in ths market is being in Seattle, covered, seats 15-17 thousand people, and heated.
Memorial stadium footprint is something I have floated here repeatedly. The school district gets cash, Seattle gets a modern indoor facility large enough for major events.
Rip the roof off half of KeyArena, covering half. Dig out one half, or a third, for a massive underground parking garage.
The memorial stadium side would be a good point for large conventions, not far from SLU, I think you could get a hotel to build near there.
That should be sold to a private developer, retaining rights for a few dates a year for festivals.
September 6th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Live from Magnolia says.
Rumor has it Ballmer and company are waiting out the December 31st deadline to make the announcement. The reason I never brought it up is because I don’t have proof for 100%, but multiple people I know are expecting them to buy the Safeway land and possibly make an arena…
Kohl-Welles said there isn’t going to be a special session, so the Key issue is dead, it will not be funded in time to get the extra $30M. Mostly blame Nickels for that, because he did everything he possibly could to make sure it didn’t happen. Every time a KeyArena issue was brought up he shot it done. I was even told he sent lobbyist down to Olympia to lobby against SB 6116.
But we will not see any action on the arena front until after the first of the year. It’s a dead for right now
This makes sense more than any other ideal out there but until it happens I won’t put to much stock in it.

Kevin said:
“We buy a team, get them here immediately, let them play out the 2-3 years in the Key that it would take to build the arena.”
I guess I said it so much somebody finally listened. Come on let’s face it no one here really cares about the Seattle Center other than if the Sonics come back to play there. I certainly don’t. The lame-duck mayor sure didn’t. Bumbershoot is an overpriced joke. The EMP looks like an abortion gone wrong. I say just let it wither on the vine. I really don’t care if it turns into urban blight and it’s obvious I’m in the majority. Stop trying to do CPR on it, just let it die and bring on the condos.
September 6th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
i’d just like to point out how ridiculous it is that there’s shitty weather out at a giant festival this weekend, and everyone is stuck watching the headliners in the rain even though the “region’s premiere concert venue” is right there on the Seattle Center grounds. KeyArena is not even servicable for a festival where they throw up makeshift stages all over the grounds… genius planning.
September 6th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
The bellevue rumor revolving around an option to buy land and waiting for Dec. 31 to expire has been circulating pretty heavily for a few months. It has been moving through senior leadership over at Microsoft which gives it a lot of credibility. That said I have spoken with someone in the last week who has more credibility than that and was willing to go on record that it is not accurage.
The special session situation is a lot more in flux than anyone has admitted publicly. It is certainly not a sure thing but it is not as dead as Jeanne’s e-mail may have indicated. It has re-emerged as the number 1 shot for the next few weeks. Better to chase it than chase other rumors.
September 6th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
So the Ballmer group’s offer does indeed expire at the end of this year?
September 6th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
It depends, I guess, partly on the revenue forcast due on the 17th.
Raha is a funny dude.
September 6th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
Oh, duh, why, Raha started off his presentation of the Washington State Economic Forcast with this quote, “If all the economists were laid end to end, they would not reach a conclusion.” George Bernard Shaw.
Anyway, good news, we are in the trough.
How long is the question, and what the revenue forcast says on the 17th should provide some indications.
I understand that nobody wants to talk about a possible special session in October, when they are all there anyway. We shall see.
About Bellevue.
If it is easy enough for me to speculate about then, ya, I expect fatter wallets to be looking around the East side. Good for them, a competition of ideas will push people to do more than talk, I hope, in Seattle or outside.
September 6th, 2009 at 7:50 pm

I hope any new arena and team ends up ANYWHERE other than seattle. Let some other community benefit from everything that that would bring. Let seattle, its leaders, and its voters all see how they blew it.
September 7th, 2009 at 11:06 am
Baker, I’ve also thought the idea of privatizing the Key is the most feasible option for getting something done within the Seattle city limits. get a group of private investors to provide a fresh vision of the venue. The Memorial idea is good, I just wonder where the $$$ would come from? renovations are easier than tearing down and starting over. Right now I firmly believe Bellevue is the place. There is Microsoft money over there and Fed Up is right that a new suburban community might be more receptive to benefitting from pro sports. Ballmer and Co. are crazy if they don’t want to at least look at the Eastside. Any chance SOS and Sonic fans might actively communicating with Eastside political and business leadership?
September 7th, 2009 at 11:28 am
Baker thanks for sharing - that poster art is kickass!
September 7th, 2009 at 11:30 am
“On his last day in office I might send him a big letter A, not for effort, but because he took the A out of Seattle … he’s the mayor of Settle.” LOL Xteve, nice one.
September 7th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
I posted this elsewhere but wanted to share it here too.
I am proud of all the fans that supported the Sonics up to the end. This level of support would be rare to non-existent in most other cities. This is one of the many reasons why I believe we can still get another team here; the NBA must recognize that Seattle fans are a huge and dedicated group that still has not gone away.
Most Sonics fans, after having been screwed by the regional politicians so many times, have migrated to the hope for a private arena. My thinking now is that we have to pull pretty much completely out of this current mega-recession before that type of activity will be viable. There are so many potential big players in acquiring a new team and arena deal who prefer to stay out of the fray until there is a known-winner solution. People don’t like to be associated with a losing proposition; people with a big public persona even moreso.
That said, I would bet that Ballmer and his investors would love to have a multi-faceted arena project in the Bellevue area. Even in the SODO area. I think most people recognize that the B2 proposal was pretty much a non-starter, but at least they had the right idea on moving away from publicly funded stadiums. I will admit it has taken me a long time to get on that same bandwagon, and I’m still not 100% on there :).
I still have a glimmer of hope for a Key Arena deal from the legislature, but it would only fly in the context of a relatively huge economic stimulus package with healthy near-term job creation for WA state. Otherwise they’ll never get back into a special session before the year is out. I’m planning to completely abandon all notions of publicly-funded sports arenas as soon as Jan 1 2010 rolls up. It really vastly changes the game once the politicians are squarely removed from the picture. It will be interesting to see how arena plans develop in this area as the economy improves.

Thanks speed, here is the show on the web:

Danny is a great guy, and put together a very fine show.
Setting the Moscow posters next to the Seattle posters was very interesting, the styles, colors, and forms were amazing.
I am glad I held onto a couple Gashuffer posters Joe Newton made.
. . .
In my mind, the proto-graphic styles are very visible in the old-school Sonics designs. For Seattle, and many other places, that popular graphic art poster is very much a current art form, and strangely always current.
For me, I think my earliest exposure to the graphic as art was probably me wearing a deep sea diver menu/mask at ivars more than 40 years ago. Ivar graphics, menus, advertising are amazing.
Check this out, needs to be authenticated, but..

September 7th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
here the style references look reversed to me, “The Types” looks like a late ’80’s influenced local band, and the “Linkn Park” poster could be confused with USSR “state” propaganda.
http://www.seattlemoscow.com/images/home_slideshow/12.gif
anyway, enough off topic.
September 7th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
Speed, thanks for the link to the tribune article. It is great to see someone that has that much initiative to get out there and keep the story alive. I don’t post often, but keep reading this site almost daily, and am always encouraged and amazed to see the same small group of contributors still at it. Still blogging, making videos, writing letters, making the local news and just keeping the sonics story alive. So thanks to everyone out there that are still doing something and keeping the hope alive for a future Sonic team. Look forward to meeting many of you at the sonicsgate premier.

LOL Baker that band is called “The Clitoral Truth”. Can’t beat that.
I liked those posters! The X poster was one I’d never seen before for that band.
September 7th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Nice site, those posters are crazy.
A guy I used to share a house with worked at Kinkos on u-way, he printed lots of cheap pole posters, I kept none of those.
He had a t-shirt business sellin through his own catalog most local bands. He had a fanzine, all kinds of strange stuff would just show up in the mail.
Lots of band put out all kinds of stuff.
One of my favs was a condom from the band the Purdins, card holder said “because the Purdens care”.
September 7th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
One of my favorite artifacts from the not-so-distant past is a t-shirt from the sub pop 200 record release party. The graphic on the cover of the record is the same as on the shirt. The image really captured the grind, going to shows and the majority of people there were people in other bands (not me).
A 21 year old t-shirt, that is nuts.

Well, yes, Nickelssaud Ballmer bought-off on the settlement, he played along with the “I think they are already gone” line of thinking long before the settlement.
I think it is fair to say that the whole arena-NBA deal is up for grabs after 12/31/09, with the NBA eyeing Ballmer’s wallet as a “good owner”.
I doubt that he is the only person with the means and interest, but he does have the inside track to be the one.

are replacement refs a good or bad thing for the nba?

September 8th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
Ah, as I remember that was a horrible situation, players got hurt, the calls were shockingly bad.
One thing the pro refs do do is keep giants from playing stupid and hurting each other, knock the calls all you want, that is fair, but the safety of players is pretty well managed, concidering the size and speed.

The talk is that the New Jersey Nets may be for sale.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:20 am
Is there any reason to feel any hope about another team being up for sale? I don’t see it. RE the Nets, Jay Z still raps about them playing in Brooklyn. Might not mean anything but I feel like he’d try pretty hard to keep them here (Brooklyn via NJ).

According to a wikipedia profile on the New Jersey Nets franchise, the Nets are also dealing with a 12-31-09 deadline. That is, if the proposed Brooklyn arena project does not get going by that date, it is apparently going to be cancelled.

Man it’s rough to be a Seattle fan. I mean, we have the Seahawks, who if they go .500 it’s a vast improvement. The Mariners did what they do best, nothing. The NBA has left us once proud Sonics fans to vent on a forum once dedicated to the team. and UW football will win a few games this year. And this will be a closer to typical season for Seattle sports than any of us want to admit. ugh.
Thanks for letting me vent all. I wear Sonics, Mariners, Seahawks and Huskies gear all over NYC. I see Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Knicks, Celtics, Bulls, Giants, Jets, Syracuse, Boston College, Ohio st, Michigan gear in response. Sometimes I need to come on here and vent lol.

Glad to hear that living in the Big Apple hasn’t dulled your Seattle sports fan’s sense of self-hatred, Eric! You’re staying in touch with your roots.
(But how do people there get away with walking around town in Red Sox gear?)

Hi Brian:
How bout a real detailed update on what is happening with bringing back NBA Basketball to Seattle. All we hear is little remarks about things happening behind the scenes. I don’t see why it should all be a secret now cuz the old team is gone and the more that loyal Sonic fans know about the more they will support whatever is happening and makes some loud noise. I think many Sonic fans need a little shot of hope to keep the spirit up. Just hearing some details would sure get a lot of people pumped up. I hate to put pressure on you but as you well know you have become the spotlight of the sonics return. A lot of people are looking to you to make things happen. Like it or not that is what it is. Let us know where things stand!

sonicsman,
fact: the KEY Arena is a dive, a clunker, an albatross around our supersonsonic necks
fact: steve ballmer would like an NBA team (with a renovated Key arena)
fact: the NBA is money driven
fact: ballmer has lots of money and seattle is a large market
fact: seattle supported the NBA for 41 years, Howard Schultz ran it into the ground and sold us out
fact: the key arena was packed the final game vs the mavs at the key so the support is there for a new team.
arena=nba team plain and simple oh and this time is doesn’t have to cost $500 million.
dealing with this issue for the past 6 months has me personally convinced that the Sonics will return but when is another question… I am optimistic and guessing but perhaps 2012 we might get some progress but it is all contingent on getting the Key overhauled of preferably torn down.
Oh and Gary Payton wants his jersey hung from the rafters “IN SEATTLE”.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:31 am
“IN SEATTLE” I love that! Classic GP drawl. Greatest Sonic ever indeed and easily my favorite athlete ever.
JAS. I will always bleed Seattle! The terrible teams make it that much better when I come across Seattle sports fans in the big city. Gotta represent!

Eric E,
I just moved to manhattan about a month ago, and my buddy and I just found a seahawk fans bar on the upper east side. There should be free food and drinks specials all day on game day for seahawks fans. Go hawks. Let me know if you’re interested. I haven’t decided if I’ll be reppin’ my griffey mariners shirt or one of my 10 sonics shirts. It’ll probably be a game day decision, i’m sure.

I was just giving my 2 cents on where we stood on getting a team back.

give a “shot of hope to keep the spirit up”

Criminy, that’s awesome you found a Seahawks bar in Manhattan! I’m not an NFL fan and I work Sundays so I’m not sure if I’ll make it there for a game but if I can I will definitely try. Do you know if they also show Huskies games? I’m trying to watch the Idaho-UW game tonight but have no idea where to go. What’s the name of the bar?
Wear Sonics gear!!!
September 12th, 2009 at 11:44 am
Eric,
No word on the huskies game unfortunately, which also kinda blows. Let me know if you have any leads. The information for the seahawks games are here:
http://www.meetup.com/NYC-Seattle-Seahawks-Fans/
The name of the bar is Carlow East. It’s a bummer you work on sundays, but give it a shot when you get a chance. Hope to see you there sometime.
