Classy

i want to thank Gary and Monique Payton for so graciously allowing us into their home today. It is one thing to meet somebody to talk. It is another to be in their house and be treated as kindly and graciously as we were today. GP spared nothing. He refused to let us take a cab home and actually invited us out to the MGM Grand with him tonight.
Oh, and he is really confident a team will be coming. We’re setting a few meetings up.
I hesitate to put this up online but so much was made today about the bond between fans and the team that I feel the message should be shared. GP talked about how we went to the finals together and when I asked about the team he told me about how the team couldn’t do it with the fans and that we were all like his brothers and sisters. It was really touching. Thanks GP, it meant a lot to me!
September 11th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
I remember last spring running into Payton after he was doing something at King5. I was so nervous to speak of him. An idol of my childhood right there in front of him. I shook his hand and started talking to him and was amazed by how absolutely engaging he was. He had this suit with him telling him had a flight to catch and Payton looked at him and said this, never will forget it;
“I’m with a true fan, a brother man, if I miss the flight, I miss the flight.”
GP will always be with me. Greatest Sonic ever.

That is awesome. GP is the man
September 11th, 2009 at 6:24 pm
I was at the Ronald McDonald house today doing some volunteering and they stone pavers and one of them is a Sonic logo. It was pretty depressing…

again it seems to me that Mallahan has a more palatable platform for Seattle’s voters. Yes, I am glad that McGinn is talking about more than the tunnel, and in more detail. But taking over the Seattle School District? That’s just not a good idea period, especially with so many other issues to address.

EricE - buddy, this is for you, from the previous thread, in case you missed it:

September 11th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Eric E,
I just moved to manhattan about a month ago, and my buddy and I just found a seahawk fans bar on the upper east side. There should be free food and drinks specials all day on game day for seahawks fans. Go hawks. Let me know if you’re interested. I haven’t decided if I’ll be reppin’ my griffey mariners shirt or one of my 10 sonics shirts. It’ll probably be a game day decision, i’m sure.
-criminy.
”
criminy, I’m pretty sure Eric would be into this! Wear Sonics gear for chrissakes!!

getting a team is not the hard part.
Anyway, the SOS folks are not likely going to get Endorser’s Remorse (since your pick did not advance), but that maybe that is happening at Publicola.net

GP is a class act! I am sure Brian was in aw about GP Vegas Crib that is a monster. I met GP at the Thomas & Mack in Vegas and he really is down to earth. He will be a big part of bringing the NBA back to Seattle.
September 11th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
thx for sharing the articles Speedcat! Happy that Steve Kelley still occasionally spotlights the Sonics and brings the human element to it to show people what we really lost.

Criminy, that’s awesome you found a Seahawks bar in Manhattan! I’m not an NFL fan and I work Sundays so I’m not sure if I’ll make it there for a game but if I can I will definitely try. Do you know if they also show Huskies games? I’m trying to watch the Idaho-UW game tonight but have no idea where to go. What’s the name of the bar?
And Speeds right, wear Sonics gear!!!

Tossed up a little something about the NBA Ref Lockout forth coming… Check out the quote about Stern couple paragraphs down by the ref chair.
http://www.ihateclay.com/david-stern-needs-to-go/
September 12th, 2009 at 10:54 am
““The problem is, David Stern does not negotiate. He tells you what’s going to happen and then when you don’t do it, and do something differently, he whines and acts like a child,” McMorris said. “That’s not how you negotiate. Not with adults.””
That sounds exactly like the Stern we all know and love.

“Silverman and Naranjo are not disclosing the terms of the deal. But they will be responsible for selling advertising at KeyArena as well as selling the arena’s 55 suites for concerts, Seattle Storm and Seattle University basketball games and other events. This year there will be about 100 events overall at KeyArena.”
The Sonics, T-birds and Storm alone accounted for over 100 events. Wonder what the attendance for these replacement events will be?
September 12th, 2009 at 11:59 am
Eric,
No word on the huskies game unfortunately, which also kinda blows. Let me know if you have any leads. The information for the seahawks games are here:
http://www.meetup.com/NYC-Seattle-Seahawks-Fans/
The name of the bar is Carlow East. It’s a bummer you work on sundays, but give it a shot when you get a chance. Hope to see you there sometime. And yea, it really is a no brainer: it’ll be sonics for sure, as I wear them all the time still, anyway. Eff OKC.
September 12th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
Eric,
Okay a friend keyed me in on a husky bar: Rattle n hum at 33rd and madison. Try looking into it.
September 12th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
U guys are making me wanna visit NYC again!

Do you realize that the Flaming Lips song, “Do You Realize” was officially voted state song of Oklahoma this year? I didn’t realize that until I heard it on KCMU, er, I mean KEXP just now.
Holy crap! There must be more cool Oklahomans than I ever knew. Clearly we’ve mostly been exposed to the bad side.
Interesting history at the bottom - the people voted, the Legislature balked, and then the Gov instead created an executive order:

Gotta love GP. I agree, he is the Greatest Sonic Ever. If he can contribute to getting Sonics 2.0 here, he’ll be even greater. FOKC.
September 12th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
Wayne Coyne is not the inventor of the Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster. Just wanted that cleared up right away.

Off-topic, but this is an interesting article criticizing MJ’s HOF induction speech:

Speedcat: Correction: I am pleased to inform you that “Do You Realize” was not named the official Oklahoma state song. It was named the official ROCK song.
September 12th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
Here’s Sam Smith blogging about it:

Thanks JAS for sharing that article. I did not see the speech but it sounds petty indeed. What a weird way to end it.
September 12th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
all i can say is wow. interviewing GP for an hour and then hanging out with him all night was surreal. we’ll post pics on the Sonicsgate Facebook real soon. he really wants to help us get a team back. what a class guy.
September 12th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
Other than watching a Sonics title that’s probably the coolest thing a person can do. You are one lucky SOB Adam.
September 12th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
i know Eric, i know. only took about 387 phone calls to make it happen… plus a lot of luck.
September 12th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
You deserve it Adam. I cannot wait to see this footage! OMG
September 12th, 2009 at 10:07 pm
Perfect scenario would be to wait a few extra years and find a way to rip the Thunder out of OKC. Unlikely but would ANY of us feel any remorse??
September 13th, 2009 at 1:54 am
Remorse? Hell no. No matter the circumstances.
September 13th, 2009 at 8:16 am
Zero.
September 13th, 2009 at 8:40 am
None, I’d go help pack Nick Collison’s house down there and get him here faster.
Though I can imagine a scenario of him just rounding up his family, screaming “LEAVE IT!!! LEAVE IT!!! We can get better stuff when we get back home to Seattle!”
haha
September 13th, 2009 at 9:07 am
Will I have remorse if OKC loses “their” team? Hell effing no. I will still be angry about having the sonics stolen for a very, very long time. The sonics were an integral part of my childhood and i’m effin pissed at the owners that i will never get to see a sonics championship in my lifetime.
FOKC.
September 13th, 2009 at 9:37 am
Criminy,
That is the exact reason I created ihateclay.com for people like you who are still very pissed. The classy market was cornered with SC here and Supersonic Soul. There are still a lot of angry people out there and I get a lot of emails thanking me for having the site where they can lash out and on occasion bash some Oklahomans.
Speaking of which, I am in the process of finalizing my distribution deal for my upcoming film. It is going to be available world wide on DVD, itunes, hulu and netflix. So you’ll be able to get my movie anywhere in the world (Greenland, Zimbabwe, Mongolia, Estonia, Antarctica if they got internet down there) except for Oklahoma. You got an Oklahoma IP, you won’t be able to find my film. haha
September 13th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
I was in Tacoma at the Bank to Bay 10k race and saw Kris at the starting line holding the SOS poster. He’s a real tall guy and all in bright yellow. So he’s impossible to miss. Great to see that kind of spirit and the Sonic story staying alive!
http://www.thenewstribune.com/sports/story/839177.html
September 13th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
No doubt you deserved that Adam. All of you working on the film do. Props again to GP. Further cementing himself as my favorite athlete!
September 13th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
Can we find a way to sneak in Mitch Levy into the “revamped” Ford Center to ask Stern’s impressions of it on the eve of another Referee Strike/lockout??
September 13th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Criminy, Thanks for the heads up in the Huskies bar too. Basically I work during the day on Saturdays and Sundays. It will be hard to watch any football games unless they’re night games. Did you go to the Seahawks bar for the game? How was it?
September 13th, 2009 at 6:49 pm
That’s awesome you guys got to hang out with GP!
But as someone already said, getting a team isn’t the hard part. Is he gonna help us get a builing?
September 13th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
Just heard Massive Monkies made it to the next round!
September 13th, 2009 at 11:17 pm
Last time in Vegas I wore my old school shawn kemp jersey all day. Everytime I walked on the strip or into a new casino I got Yelled at either.. Hey is that a shawn Kemp jersey or whats up shawkn kemp. If only it was girls yelling and not guys but none the less one of coolest and weirdest that so many people identified the jersey.. I suggest everyone try it they have the chance..
September 14th, 2009 at 8:56 am
Less than a month until Sonicsgate drops! I can’t wait to watch but I’m sad I won’t be surrounded by my fellow SOS friends and other Sonics faithful.
September 14th, 2009 at 9:54 am
It’s starting to look as if the recovery of the local sports scene is in sync with the country’s financial recovery (Just being cautiously optimistic)—Maybe with all of this enthusiasm for the Hawk’s, Huskies, and M’s being on a winning course again can get the bandwagon jumpers to start thinking about having pro-basketball back…….
September 14th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
RE: Paul
ya man it was crazy. i wore my Sonics hat and t-shirt the first night and people all over the city would yell out “YEAH SONICS.” felt good to get that reinforcement. everyone in the country not from OKC is on our side.
September 14th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
living in pennsylvania (much to my astonishment, and this is seven states and two nations after my seattle boyhood), i also get positive feedback when wearing sonics gear. but don’t kid yourself — everyone being ‘on our side’ amounts to less than zero. this war is ours (or steve ballmer’s). we must fight it ourselves.
September 14th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
What exactly does the money we donate towards “Sonicsgate” go towards? I’m just a little confused, since the donation pledge deadline is well after the film will be released. I ask because my birthday is coming up, and I am thinking of asking people to give money towards the kickstarter thing in lieu of presents/money for myself. But they aren’t all necessarily as interested in basketball/the Sonics as I am, so I’d just like to be able to better explain to them what it goes towards. Of course I will also donate.
September 14th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
good question JAS - the money goes towards printing DVDs, flyers, shirts, reimbursing travel costs, hard drive space and maintaining the website so people can keep watching the movie for free. this $5K Kickstarter goal would put just a small dent in what we’ve invested into the film, but most importantly it will allow us to host and continue adding bonus content to the website.
the only time-sensitive reward is the $920 Gary Payton Level, which gets you two Free VIP tickets to the sold out Premiere. that one disappears on Oct. 9th.
Kickstarter is set up so you only get the donations if you hit your goal, otherwise the people who generously contributed keep their money and we get nothing. It has a 90-day limit, so we wanted to give people as much time as possible to help us hit the goal!
September 14th, 2009 at 8:14 pm
Wore my Seattle Sellouts http://www.screwclay.com/images/selloutlarge.gif t-shirt to the Seahawks season opener. Recieved quite a bit of positive feedback for it.
Also I rode the Sounder train to the game. I overheard a conversation cursing our local leaders, Howard Schultz and Clay Bennett a few seats down from me. There’s still a lot of passion out there guys.
September 14th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
I also wanted to say to adam and brian robinson and whoever else was there I’m so happy for you that you got that time with the one and only GP, you guys deserved it! It must have been amazing and surreal.

September 15th, 2009 at 10:23 am
Hey Adam,
Will donate a bit on Friday when I get paid.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:54 am
That’s awesome Payton is so involved in bringing a team back to the Pacific Northwest. His legacy will live on forever for Sonic fans, with a new team or not. Much love Glove.
September 15th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
it’s amazing how confident Gary is that we’ll get a new team. he just views this no team period as a bump in the road, though he’s obviously not as up to speed on the local political climate as we on this blog are. as Brian and we have discussed, it’s key to have his voice and build the local coalition to find a solution. feelin pretty good about Mallahan in that regard.
no worries Kevin we know you’re down, and thanks to Sharman Ballantine for the donation today!
September 15th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
Just pledged $150, let’s go people, get into the spirit, basketball will be back in Seattle!!!!!!!!!!!!! If a California Sonics fan pledges $150, Seattle fans should already have the pledges over $5,000, let’s go…FOKC
September 15th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
If I had the cash, I’d fund the entire thing!
For the funds I’m trying to raise for my new film ($418k) I can just round up to $450k and donate the rest to you guys.
September 15th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
has gp gone into specifics on his plan to help bring a team back? for him, lenny wilkens, fred brown, james donaldson and all the other former players who might be interested it seems that a pr campaign is probably the most they can pull off with the hopes attracting some investors in a project. at some point it seems going pibluc with a proposal might be most beneficial.
September 15th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
has gp gone into specifics on his plan to help bring a team back?
I think his big plan is that he’ll put in a good word for us whenever an owner is thinking about moving a team. That should be worth alot. Folks sure do hang on whatever he says though.
September 15th, 2009 at 6:11 pm
sorry to be a skeptic — i love gp too, and all the old sonics — but owners and commissioners don’t listen to players much when it comes to placing franchises. they listen instead to george washington, andrew jackson, ulysses gran, and benjamin franklin. lots and lots and lots. when baltimore was angling to get back into the nfl, all the old colts who stayed in baltimore and agitated on behalf of the effort were actually annoying to paul tagliabue. . . cleveland got back into the league because of al lerner, not jim brown. . . wormtongue stern advises the owners, and what will make him urge action is the enticing prospect of having $teve ballmer as part of the club.
remember, the owners and players don’t really like each other very much.
September 16th, 2009 at 1:26 am
Seattle was too cheap and that’s why they lost the team. Need to pony up the bucks to get a franchise to come/stick around. We here in St. Louis would not hesitate to pony up the bucks if we had a real opportunity to get a team. Hell, I’d trade both the Rams and the Blues for ANY basketball team. We gotta hold on to our Cardinals though
September 16th, 2009 at 8:18 am
Yo Eric E,
Went to the seahawks bar and it was awesome. about 40+ people were there cheering. Got a lot of positive comments on my sonics shirt. I’m probably gonna try to make it as freq. as possible.
September 16th, 2009 at 10:34 am
That’s awesome Criminy! I get out at 6 on Sundays so I’ll definitely do what I can to get there. I need me some fellow Seattle fans! lol.
September 16th, 2009 at 11:00 am
thanks for the contribution mtp!
September 16th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
In 1996 while i was a poor starving college, I drove from California about 25 hours (in snow with a dropped Pontiac Grand Prix) to watch Seattle-Utah in the Western Conference finals. I literally rolled quarters to get me and my g/f the WORST seats in the house, absolute top line of seats behind one of the rafters, we leaned to the far left to watch the game…BARELY. It was worth every penny even though we lost in overtime, I think it was game 5. F’en Malone.
I remember rockin’ my old school Ray Allen jersey every time we’d get smoked by the Lakers, and nearly getting into fights everytime I walked out of Staples sportin’ green and gold.
I remember where I was on the freeway, listening to the draft lottery being unveiled, giving us the 2nd pick when we should’ve had the 5th or 6th pick, knowing it’d be Oden or Durant. I almost crashed.
Sadly enough, most of all I remember the feeling in my stomach when the what I thought was impossible happened–the announcement on ESPN that the Sonics were indeed leaving Seattle, robbing me of pretty much every childhood memory I had relating to NBA basketball.
I remember knowing immediately that, even though I’m an out of towner Seattle basketball fan, there was no way in F**king hell that I’d ever root for the man and the city that ripped away NBA basketball from me for now two years. Here’s to the speedy return of NBA basketball to Seattle, $150 would be a small price to pay if it helps bring that back to me and all real basketball fans.

September 16th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
mtp, that’s awesome of you! I can’t tell you guys enough how much it means to me that there are other true die hard fans out there.
I will never forget game 6 of the 2005 WCSF against the Spurs. My friend and I were in the very last row of Key Arena. Throughout the game we would bang on the wall behind us to make as much noise as possible and my friend even made a dent in the wall lol. What I remember most of all though was the timeout before Manu made the game winning pass to Tim Dincan (stupid Potapenko). When the timeout was called I started yelling “SUPER” and he would yell “SONICS.” It didn’t take long for our section to join in and before I knew it the entire stadium was chanting as the timeout ended. I have no idea if we were the ones who started it, but I like to think so lol.
Much love to all Supersonics fans around the world!

Final game at the Key vs Mavs. For me that game was very meaningful. Not my favorite memory but very meaningful.
thank you everyone..
September 16th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
anyone hear any more rumors about ballmer and the potential private arena?
September 16th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
I also remember 2005 wcsf game 6 so vividly. As someone who has been to many games, (including the entire 02-03 season where my UW freshman year college roommate and I were season ticket holders and busted our butts the summer before to pay off the tix) the key was hands down at its absolute loudest on the final play of that game. Up until that point I had never seen so much noise, energy, passion, and emotion that resonated throughout the entire building in my entire life. it was, for lack of better words, fucking incredible. the entire sonics 2005 playoffs was exactly the reason why I loved nba basketball so much. it literally brings out the best passion and energy out of everyone in the building, and has a atmostphere that is just simply unparalled to regular season basketball. everyone gets into the games, initiates super sonics chants, and are animated about every action and referee call on the court - as they should be. i absolutely fucking loved, loved, loved, that passion about the playoffs, and it makes me so fucking angry that I will never ever get to experience that again the team that I loved so damn much. i’m still not over it, and I honestly don’t know if I ever will be over it. F the nba, F david stern, and FOKC.
PS - did anyone else see that hersey hawkins was just hired by the blazers as well?
September 17th, 2009 at 12:50 am
I continue to talk to people who talk to people and the sentiment is the same. People feel pretty comfortable that if a building gets done then Balmer is buying a team. If the $30M is on the line then it is a mechanism to get the building funded but he never intends to collect the $30M so it really isn’t relevant. If the political climate is easier next year becuase the recession has lifted and we will have a new mayor then maybe it isn’t worth anyones time to do much now. A team wouldn’t come unitl 2011 or 2012 anyway and this could be the toughest year in that window to get the building done just because of the economy.
I don’t have anything concrete on that. It just seems to be the prevelent attitude over and over again. I heard it again today and it seems to be a similar message from peopel who are in position to know. I just don’t know if they are completely certain themselves or it is more of an assumption/hope thing. We all hope Balmers still interested. If he’s not theres not a damn thing I could do to help us get a team.
September 17th, 2009 at 6:15 am
being an ol’ fart, my sonics memories begin back in what is now the hazy spencer haywood era, run thru slick watts and his playoff excitement, linger lovingly over the construction of the wizard/dj/lonnie/jack/marvin/etc. late 70s team, fast-forward past the paul westphal trade and into the gp era. . . our love for the team is hard to quantify in dollar terms, but at some mysterious level, it does translate into cash, in that the nba knows — at a time when its brand is not w/out real problems — that there’s a well of seattle pro hoops passion which they can/should/will(?) tap back into. . . i hope.
September 17th, 2009 at 9:50 am
Thanks to Eric E, Brainfreeze and JAS!
September 17th, 2009 at 11:29 am
I think Ballmer will strike if the iron is hot. Right now the iron is cold and has cobwebs on it. Construction costs are down at least 20% these days and this will continue for another 1 year or 2. It would be really great if Seattle could have an arena that is built ‘green’ and is a great place to see events. The good news is the Key is a train wreck, it is only a matter of time before that thing falls down or will become obsolete even for roller derby and LAN parties.

I’d prefer a Green AND Gold Arena.

“Russia’s richest man Mikhail Prokhorov is preparing an offer to help the New Jersey Nets build a new arena and sources close to him say he could own a large stake in the NBA club as part of the $700 million deal.”

We really need a miracle now to get Bennett’s $30M.
Unfortunately, while I’m pleased we appear to be on our way out of the
recession, it also means we likely won’t be having a special session
which means we cannot pass needed legislation to be able to get thr
$30 million from Bennett by Dec. 31. We’ll have to see how the
legislation plays out in the 2010 session.

Thanks for sharing that Kev. It’s awesome that some folks here have developed such good relationships with the key politicians in this. I know Jeanne and Ed would do what it takes if they had the power.
