CHRIS WILCOX NAMED WESTERN CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
SEATTLE – The NBA announced today that Sonics forward Chris Wilcox has been named Western Conference Player of the Week for games played Monday, April 3 through Sunday, April 9. Wilcox averaged 23.0 points and 15.3 rebounds while shooting 75.0 percent (27-of-36) from the field during the week to help the Sonics extend their winning streak to a season-long four games. The league honor is the first of Wilcox’s career and the first for a Sonics player this season.
Wilcox began the week by posting 26 points and a career-high 24 rebounds in a 104-87 win over Houston on April 4, becoming the first Sonics player to post a 20-point/20-rebound game since Shawn Kemp did so on Nov. 15, 1995. Wilcox’s 24 rebounds were also the most by a Sonics player since Jack Sikma grabbed 25 boards on Feb. 10, 1983. Wilcox also dished out a career-best six assists at Portland last Friday, April 7, and has recorded double-doubles in scoring and rebounding in four consecutive games.
After averaging 4.5 points and 3.6 rebounds in 48 games with the Clippers this season, Wilcox has posted 15.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game since joining the Sonics on Feb. 23.
The New York Knicks’ Jamal Crawford was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week after averaging 26.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.25 steals per game. He hit two game-winning jumpers to lead the Knicks to a 3-1 record during the week. Crawford grew up in Seattle and was a prep basketball star at Rainier Beach High School
Other nominees for Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week were Cleveland’s LeBron James, Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki, New Jersey’s Jason Kidd, Orlando’s Dwight Howard, Sacramento’s Mike Bibby and Seattle’s Ray Allen.
The Seattle Sonics & Storm organization manages the Puget Sound region’s professional basketball franchises – the NBA’s Seattle SuperSonics and the WNBA’s Seattle Storm. The organization oversees all sales, marketing, finance, public relations and basketball operations for the teams. The Basketball Club of Seattle LLC owns both teams.

Can anyone remember the anticipation of the Sonics having a chance to put a player in the post who posed a 20-10 threat? I used to laugh at the ridiculous idea that it was even possible!!!

So true. Hell……I used to pray for a 10-8 guy.

“I used to pray for a 10-8 guy.”
Or at the very least, one that wasn’t going to trot off during the offseason to some downtrodden team like Atlanta because they had the cap room and we weren’t willing to spend the money.
Come on, Sonics. This is your chance–don’t blow it.

How many teams are looking for that player? Nearly every team.
We can be guaranteed every team is scouting him right now to see how he get fit on their team.
This summer is going to be interesting.

I’m thinking that 3 years ~$27m is becoming very feasible for Wilcox. Let Rashard walk after next year and draft a swingman this year. Use the savings of Rashard to help pay Wilcox, Nick, etc…

I dug up some new stats that folks might find interesting but put them in Suns game thread because the first one was a reply to a question about fouls raised there. Check them out if you want more information about Wilcox’s rebounding and scoring rates relative to other power forwards, and the scoring rate for the centers, point guards and D Wilkins too.

Honorable mention value on the court award for Watson. His 65% player win % since coming here leads the team by wide margin (if you dont count M Wilks who has won all his time on the court).
Wilcox is ok but not eyepoppoing on player win %, right in between Allen and Lewis close to team as a whole record.
Ridnour at 40%
Swift has increased his player win % while on the court considerably compared to back in January.

That would be almost too good to be true. I’d try for a 4 or 5 year deal. Remember, he’s only 23.
Funny moment of my day: Some retard (caller, not host) on KJR said this afternoon he wouldn’t offer Wilcox the same contract Vladi got ….where do these people come from? That’d be friggin peanuts for a player putting up his stats at his age. Is Internet message board posting allowed at City Council meetings?

This is great for Wilcox and Sonics. I was hoping that he would mature quickly when/if given playing time. I think by now he is our future starting PF and our main concern is probably how expensive are those?? Im also very happy that Sonics didnt start to sandbag games, as if the team can build from how they are playing now to next season, Im pretty sure we will be a playoffs team for next 10 years at least!

Interesting stat at team level:Sonics win 50% of games this year against “average” teams (i.e. ranked between 11th and 20th in league) by net point differential but win 5% less against “poor” teams. Last year the Sonics were 15% better against poor teams than average ones. “Take everybody seriously and the same” is a pre-game talking point I am sure they try to reinforce.

Wilcox has said a couple times that he’d prefer a shorter length deal. Although, the thinking probably was that he wouldn’t get a near max deal and wanted to up his value with a short-term contract (ie the 2-3yr deal).

Chris should get a 5 year offer from someone. There’s a couple teams with big cap room that need a PF — Chicago, Atlanta could be interested. That’d be a big score for an Eastern Conference team. But in the end I believe Seattle matches any deal. Even at $9-10 mil/yr for 3-5 years, we’ll always be able to trade a 6-10 guy that young as long as he stays healthy.

Well, I think we just need to not take Ehlo seriously and just think of him as an entertainer, much like Walton.
The game against Portland last week, something went wrong and we were forced to watch Portland’s game broadcast; I’d take Ehlo over those clowns any day of the week and twice and sunday.

But you can’t beat the Portland commercials. Nate talking about what it takes to play great defense, shots of him yelling at players and commentary about how they’re building something. Then the game comes back on and they’re down 20 with three minutes gone in the second quarter….

Moffet, thanks a lot.
But google showed this message:
“We’re sorry, but the provider of this video has not authorized Google to display this video in your location. ”
Maybe that’s why I couldn’t find the video through searching .. they might have blocked all IP address from Korea. dang!

I think Wilcox has put himself into a position to get at least $10 million a year. If Tyson Chandler and Dalembert got 6 years $65 million……..I’d have to think that Wilcox’s agent has to ask for around the same.
I think we need to be prepared to match an offer of 3 years $35 million at the minimum.
April 11th, 2006 at 1:10 pm
Im not sure that I agree that he has reached this level for two points:
— Chandler and Dalembert were considered 7′ Cs of the future. Although they are relatively the same in stature Cs seem to get paid more than PFs in the league.
— Those two players may have shown why the deal it not worth it. I still think he checks in just above Kwame Brown’s 8 million per year contract.

Another way to look at it is Wilcox kills all of those guys. I guess it’ll all depend on how the cap room teams do it as usual.
