I have signed up. I am willing to become a activist here. Spreading leaflets, picketing folks, whatever it takes.

  2. Brian Robinson Says:

I’m thinking that we target the first Storm home game, July 28 against Detroit to gather signatures, etc. We’ll probably do a couple of tables then…Still trying to sort this out. There’s another guy who will be leading the movement but lets get registered and do all we can.

  3. Griff Says:

I am not going to roll over and die… I will fight to keep my sonics here…

How do you guys want to go out…

“I was a huge sonics fan, but when they were bought I hated the team and did nothing to keep them”

    or

“I was a huge sonics fan and I did all I could to show Clay Bennett and the Seattle City Council that the Sonics have cultural and ecinomic value here in Seattle”

I’m not optimistic that we can do it… but that doesn’t mean we cant try… What other options do we have?

  4. yearsago Says:

Let me know ahead of time. I will just drive into work instead of taking a vanpool

  5. Jaren Says:

Yay. 7 members. I want to fight as much as the rest of you guys. But the fickle Seattle bandwagon town isn’t going to get behind it enough. And there’s far too few die hards like ourselves.

  6. sonics70 Says:

We should probably spell the mayor’s name right if we want to be taken seriously - it is Nickels, not Nichols.

  7. Brian Robinson Says:

Uphill battle my friend. Sometimes fighting the fight is worthwhile all on its own. It’s hard to fill up the list in one morning. Let’s get a good start, then hit a couple of storm games.

The rank and file citizens don’t really need to get behind it. A public vote is never going to happen on this one at this stage. What needs to happen is the politicians need to begin weighing the political repercussions of the team leaving. Until now they’ve thought that it was such a slim chance that they were more worried about the repercussions of paying the bill than they were about a move…

  8. Griff Says:

Its going to be tough… we are going to need a cross between “Braveheart” - they can take our taxes but they can never take OUR SONICS!

    and “Major League”

  9. Scott Says:

“Yay. 7 members. I want to fight as much as the rest of you guys. But the fickle Seattle bandwagon town isn’t going to get behind it enough. And there’s far too few die hards like ourselves.”

Watching Grizzlie fans go through this first hand I have a hard time jumping on board knowing that this is a really tough fight. However, I’m on board knowing that I’d rather die trying to save them then knowing I rolled over and let things happen without trying to do anything.

  10. Griff Says:

Major League hopefully can be the motto for the players on the team. I bet most of them want to stay here (other then probably Rashard (from Texas) and maybe Nick (depending on his ties to Kansas)), and if we can get them playing for that i bet it will be a huge motivation.

But Braveheart has got to be us

  11. Griff Says:

“I’m on board knowing that I’d rather die trying to save them then knowing I rolled over and let things happen without trying to do anything.”

If we don’t make the playoffs its going to be very very tough… But if we do make the Playoffs and we can rally the city around this issue then our fanaticism will be that much sweeter. Not only will we keep the Sonics in Seattle, but we will have a better fan base and a deeper connection to this team. If this guy was from Seattle instead of Oklahoma, I would be very happy. He wants to win. With our young base and potential, and a Owner who is will ing to spen money… we can get a championship in less then 4 years.

Petro, Wilcox, Rashard, for KG? never would have happened, but if Clay stays here in Seattle it sounds like he would be willing to pay KG 24 mil a year if that translated to winning… and with KG, Swift, Sene, and Ray with efficient PG’s and quality role players it could.

But all of that potential will be gone if we dont fight for it for the next 12 monthes.

  12. Griff Says:

I have been a Sonics fan all my life AND I AM NOT GOING TO LET A RICH GUY FROM OKLAHOMA AND STUBBORN ELECTED OFFICIALS CHANGE THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Christopher Says:

Just fight for the names and histories!

  15. Griff Says:

“If anyone out there starts a savethesonics.com type of website, I will do whatever I can”

    This should be that website.

  16. Griff Says:

    WE BLEED GREEN AND GOLD!

  17. Seanic Says:

This feels like we’re down 16 points with about 7 minutes left in the fourth.

Certainly not an insurmountable situation, but pretty close.

One of the problems is that we know very little right now what’s truly going on. There could be a behind-the-scenes deal that has already sealed the fate, but it’s worth making our voices heared on whatever level we can.

If we can get Ray Allen and Sue Bird onboard with fighting the Seattle fight, it would be all the difference in the world.

  18. Seanic Says:

    “Griff Says:

WE BLEED GREEN AND GOLD! ”

Trying to overcome those that bleed green.

  19. Brian Robinson Says:

    It’s already up.

    http://www.saveoursonics.org

I’ve switched the link over to them. We’re not sure how we’re going to interact but I’ve known the guy running it for years and he is the right person to head this movement. We have the same goal and will work together. I’m not worried whether our site or theirs is front and center, we just need results.

  20. Bellinghamster Says:

“WE BLEED GREEN AND GOLD” on the front of a T-Shirt
“Trying to overcome those that bleed Green” on the back.

Someone make it happen, I’ll buy 10!

  21. johnemack Says:

I was a part of the class action lawsuit back in the day to sue Ken Behring for moving the Seahawks. Plus I got a sweet T-Shirt that said “Save Our Seahawks” on it, which I proudly wear at every home game! Probably didn’t do much in the grand scheme of things to help save the Seahawks from leaving (a dude name Paul seemed to have more influence) but as a lifelong fan, you do what you have to do. I will GLADLY do the same for my Sonics. If there are any lawyers in the house, I think prepping a class action lawsuit to help prevent a move, or maybe spearheading an initiative to block a Sonics move would work as well. Heck, we have initiatives for everything from $30 car tabs to outlawing freaking bear traps, why not an initiative to prevent the Sonics from moving??

  22. The big O Says:

I just signed up. I will do whatever it takes. I want my kids to get the same joy out of the sonics that I got as a child.

    I LOVE MY SUPERSONICS!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. Gerrit Says:

I’m drafting an open letter to Howard Schultz to let him know how we feel. The idea is that everybody leaves a comment for Schultz, and we get him to read it. If you’re injterested, visit:

    http://www.screwschultz.com

  24. Brian Robinson Says:

Whether we agree on Schultz being to blame is not really relevant. Bagging on Schultz is, at this point useless. He’s sold, it’s done. What’s your long term goal in that, to get him to say “I was wrong.”

In addition I think the term “screw” makes anyone participating look unprofessional. IMO this should not be a personal vendetta against one man, it’s a desire to save our team for the people of this region.

Appreciate the effort man. We’re all trying to figure out how to handle this.

  25. Bellinghamster Says:

Even though part of me wants to punch Howard in the face, Brian is 100% correct. It does seem Schultz loved the Sonics, but he made some stupid transactions and bailed ship.

  26. bel Says:

I’m a soncis fan from way back and I read these boards everyday, but I no longer live in Seattle. It still cuts me to the bone. Having fought a public relations fight before, it’s important to focus on what can actually be accomplished vs. what we would like to do.

    1. Hitting the Storm games is precisely what should be done. Grass roots building is essential. Just getting signed petitions in the thousands has impact.

    2. The ability to get on radio to discuss the effort is also essential. Then you hit thousands more. Seems like there may be ability to do that here.

    3. A legitimate line of communications must be established with the appropriate “powers that be.” If you have thousands of signatures then you represent a voting block, then you have a legitimate interest. In fact, it makes more sense to find a legitimate lobbyist who can be the front for this. Someone out there wants a new arena - it’s big money - we need to find that lobbyist - who already has connections and put our support - hopefully thousands of signatures behind it. It will be united efforts, not a bunch of fans crying that make a difference.

    4. These email alerts should provide news, and also specific instructions. At some point, real public officials are going to be called to task. As a block we must stick together to create impact.

The real goal here is a new arena. That is what the Sonics have been asking for all along, and so that is the ONLY thing that will keep the team or even draw a new team. There needs to be an arena that can support Basketball. Heck let’s make something hockey friendly while we are at it.

  27. Jimmy Says:

I respect the sentiment, but unfortunately, I think this ship has sailed.

In looking to the future, I think that the most effective thing to do would be to mobilize an effort to unseat a grandstander like Nick Licata, and try to get the area in a strong position for the inevitable relocation of the Hornets.

  28. sonics70 Says:

Schultz just admitted to Mitch on KJR that he didn’t think through the potential arena problem when he bought the team. He agreed that his enthusiasm for the purchase led him to put off dealing with that problem until later assuming that something could be worked out.

I have to say though that the independent panel commissioned by the mayor did come back endorsing support of the Sonics’ plan and Nickels deep-sixed moving ahead with the recommendation. Sounds like the guy doesn’t have the guts to make something happen - well the fire is under him now… The bluff has been called - let’s see who steps in to make something happen.

  29. yearsago Says:

It looks like we might have a ally in this fight. Dave Mahler says he is willing to do whatever it takes.

    I love his passion.

  30. Brian Robinson Says:

He basically underestimated how tough headed the city would be…

You Go Griff!!! My sentiments exactly. For everyone waiving the white flag already isn’t it worth fighting just so you know you made your voice heard and did something? If 10 yrs from now you are sitting around talking about when the sonics left (or almost left) won’t you be proud to know you at least sent some emails, made some calls etc…. heck even just bought and wore a t-shirt (as I am sure someone will make)….

I’m proudly wearing my sonics gear at the office today.

  33. Dick Tate Says:

Trying to work out a deal with the city if Seattle will be a huge waste of time… time the Sonics don’t have.

For any hope of a deal, the team needs to go straight to the ‘burbs.

  34. Scott Says:

“Trying to work out a deal with the city if Seattle will be a huge waste of time… time the Sonics don’t have.

For any hope of a deal, the team needs to go straight to the ‘burbs.”

Completely agree. That’s where the money is.

  35. stormfann Says:

I support the distaff side of the ledger, and hope something can be done to keep the teams here.

    Good luck to us all!

  36. montanasupesfan Says:

I have been a sonics fan most of my life, i’m a dual citizen and here in BC, i’m not a big hockey fan. I loved going to sonics games when I lived in tacoma. I have a residence in Montana, yet travel continually because my pension from being a disabled vet lets me.
Yesterday was one of the worst days i’ve ever had, I can’t even think about this or I might have to go on lithium. I was a constantly posting until we switched to blog and all I do now is read.
I wish that I was there to be active and especially to meet Kevin and Brian after all these years. I am really devastated because the Sonics have been a big part of my life for so many yars (unhealthy obsession?) I will send off any forms or complaints but I can’t put out fliers because no one here (up the coast) gives a shit. Mike

  38. B_Con Says:

I was there at the Furtado Center (wearing the mask in the PI and Times photos) so you know I’m down to do what it takes.

Bennett and Stern hold the keys to this franchise. We can’t let them walk away with the team after the city doesn’t come through with a good solution to the arena situation. We need to make Stern force them to stay with a good offer in this great market or at least make sure they come out of this looking like the crooks they are when they leave good offers on the table.

If the NBA in Seattle is going down then the reputation of the NBA is going down with it. We can’t roll over and let them take our team without a fight.

  39. Myk Says:

    — Personally, I think the person that needs to be persudaded the most about the fan base is David Stern. Can we work on figuring out the best way to make him aware that we aren’t ready for them to just leave.

    — Rick Bucher on Mitch this morning said that building a whole new arena most likely would not make the new ownership group happy enough to stay…

  40. Bellinghamster Says:

Did Bucher mentioned what would convince the new ownership?

  41. myELFboy Says:

I do not live in the Seattle area (I live in eastern WA; Richland) but I am committed to e-mailing the city leaders as often as I can. The Sonics leaving the Puget Sound would be devastating to thousands, if not MILLIONS, of people, and even if this all goes for not, I’ll fight to keep them here.

“we ain’t goin’ out like that”- cypress hill

We are playing this game just like the Sonnics play on court: 5-vs-8. We are going to dive after every loose ball and block out every time a shot goes up.I hate to get all winston churchill, but man, we ain’t goin’ out like that!

Also- we need to respectful and polite in our protest. Calling Licata public enemy #1 is not a smart tactic. Plus, Licata is really representing his core constituancy, which has said, basically “Schultz has deep pockets, he needs to put up way more money!” I’d say the mayor was the one who should have been the rainmaker. The mayor is a chamber of commerce guy who also has to answer to voters. He is the nexus and he didn’t show us much.

  43. Steve Says:

“— Rick Bucher on Mitch this morning said that building a whole new arena most likely would not make the new ownership group happy enough to stay… ”

I would be extremely skeptical of Ric Bucher. He has never broken a major NBA story that I’m aware of and I doubt he knows anyone in the know on the West Coast. He’s always been one to present opinion as fact and it’s annoying as hell that Mitch continually uses him as an NBA “expert.”

  44. Steve Says:

montana sorry about the moderation, it happens when the site gets hit by spammers, which is frequently. Even happens to me. Nothing personal.

  45. Seanic Says:

“I hate to get all winston churchill, but man, we ain’t goin’ out like that!”

One ought never to turn one’s back on a threatened danger and try to run away from it. If you do that, you double the danger. But if you meet it promptly and without flinching, you will reduce the danger by half. Never run away from anything. Never!

  46. montanasupesfan Says:

    Thanks Steve

  47. NewOrleansSaintHornet Says:

I just wanted to say good luck to you guys. I really hope you can save your team. I have been through this with the Saints and the Hornets and I know how tough it is. I would suggest trying to get some of the national media on your side. Woody Paige was very helpful to Saints fans to get the word out so I think it would be wise to contact him. Also, get former players to speak out if possible(ex. Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp). One last suggestion is to make “Save our Sonics” magnets that people can put on their car. You can order them in bulk and sell them for cost. Once again good luck and I’m rooting for you guys.

  48. Alexp Says:

help keep the sonics here by signing this petition

  49. Lou k. Says:

I have not read everything above, but my opinion of Mr. Bennett announcing he is seeking approval to move the Sonics to OK is so people here will not attend games so he can “show” the NBA has lost interest in the Sonics. So we should endeavor to fill the Key for every game. I have been a fan since 1987 and had season tickets for 18 years.
