SOS Event 12/08/06

Posted on Saturday, December 2nd, 2006 at 7:52 am by Brian Robinson

On Friday, December 8th Mr. Clayton Bennett and other members of the Professional Basketball Club will be in Seattle to watch the Seattle Supersonics host the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. Obviously this game will have some significant symbolic meaning to Seattle fans.

As part of our commitment to supporting the Sonics and their future in this region Save Our Sonics and Storm will be in attendance at this game, taking advantage of the team’s Holiday Assist program to secure tickets for our membership, provide a visible presence and sending a message to our leaders that we value these teams. The Sonics and Storm are a valuable part of our community and their team foundation is extremely active in helping those in need during the holiday season. SOS&S will be making a significant contribution to the Holiday Assist program which benefits the Salvation Army and other local charities, taking that opportunity to show our support for the team while helping out with a great cause.

Please take this opportunity to show your support for the team and it’s future. By having a strong visible presence we will demonstrate to ownership, our political leaders, and the community at large that the 40 year history of the professional basketball means a great deal to individuals and families throughout our region.

Participants will receive a complimentary T-Shirt, Tickets, and Sign for the game. Please find some way to help out. We need people in attendance at the game, participating in the organization and preparation, and also in making donations to this great cause. Every $20 helps to add toys and house wares which will be donated straight to the participating charities and we encourage individuals and businesses to take part.

As sports fans lets make a real show of giving back to the community while we ask for their support.

Jack - If you want to help pass out signs to sports bars in Yakima let us know. This is a statewide issue at this point.

Damn it! I’d love to be there but it’s the start of my vacation. I’ll spread the word though

Thanks for the good work. How do you all feel about Lenny Wilkens as the new “Vice Chairman”? It seems like a good move to me…but, not one that calls for complacency. Let’s beat up on NOK!

Here’s my comments on Lenny reposted from an earlier thread

Back from the press conference and other errands.

Sorry about the initial missreport that he got ownership equity. I thought that was the deal at first but it turned out to be false.

Lenny will continue the broadcasts this season but indicated that he likely will not return next year.

His communication role is two ways. First he is going to have authority and a voice conveying the ownerships desires to management on an operations basketball level. That means that he can conceivably tell Rick Sund what to do.

Secondly he is going to be a guy who conveys the Seattle perspective candidly to ownership. This is a very good thing as they are out of touch based strictly on geography.

Here’s what I think this really does. It allows them to further show their sincerity because they have a guy with close ties to the city in the inner circle. They can say with a straight face that someone “in the know” is there to watch them. Really would Lenny Wilkens participate if he knew they had ulterior motives? Would he stab the city in the back like that? We all know he wouldn’t.

Also I think it immediately adds a great deal to their relationship with the media. Lenny is well loved by the press in this town and they’ve needed someone like that for a long time. Hell he is a member of the press. He, much more than Walker, Schultz, or Clay Bennett will be treated with some kid gloves and people who want to blatantly accuse him of lying or foul play will have to think about whether they want to trash a community icon that way.

On first thought I felt it was fairly minor. After mulling it over I think it’s a great thing.
