You may not listen to this week’s Peltoncast, but you’ll be glad it’s there to preview two big events this week — the MLB trade deadline and the Seafair unlimited hydroplane races. We’re saving our M’s hot takes for after the deadline, but Tristan is loving the minutes for surging Dominique Malonga and the Storm bench during a 2-1 road trip.

This week’s Peltoncast? It’s complicated, starting with Kevin’s position on the M’s trading for Josh Naylor a week before the MLB trade deadline. Tristan is ready to quit hearing about an overrated M’s legend who’s still making headlines, but we’re both excited about Damian Lillard’s return to Portland even though our feelings on Oregon are — you guessed it — complicated.

We toast and give takes on Cal Raleigh joining Ken Griffey, Jr. as the second M’s Home Run Derby champ ever before discussing an update on NBA expansion that wasn’t as definitive progress as we were hoping, plus the Storm slumping ahead of the All-Star break and a new contender for the title of Seattle’s best cookie.
Hot Chicken Caesar summer has begun, and we react to its limited return to the menu in place of the Taco Burger 2.0 before discussing other items we’d love to see back on the Taco Time Northwest menu and answering a listener email from yet another chef who loves TTNW.
During a quiet stretch in Seattle sports, M’s hot takes remain must-see TV (though not aging well) as the pitching staff led a 4th of July shutout sweep over the Pirates. Plus a breakout performance for Storm rookie Dominique Malonga and a scary Stefan Frei injury that could have been much worse.

We’re remembering the greatest player in Seahawks history and toasting to one of the great seasons in Mariners history as Cal Raleigh was voted the first Seattle All-Star starter since 2015. Still, M’s hot takes offers a historical solution to any angst about the team’s playoff hopes after we resume our search for Seattle’s best cookies and before we get hyped for … UW men’s basketball?

We toast to UW going into Eugene and winning national titles in the women’s high jumppole vault (with the Moll twins trading the NCAA record) and the men’s and women’s 1,500 before considering the end of the school year and what it means for the Boys of Summer, the latest from the Sounders in the FIFA Club World Cup and the Storm missing out on a chance to play for the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup.

We’re fresh out of toasts but not out of takes as Cal Raleigh continues raking and the Mariners continue losing. Before that, an encouraging update from Adam Silver as the NBA continues to move tentatively toward expansion, and we also discuss a key late addition to the UW men’s basketball starting five and reasonable expectations for the upcoming season.
Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh has earned the two biggest words a player can get as an honor — not “retired jersey,” especially when the number has already been retired, as with Randy Johnson — “he’s up.” Plus the Kraken have a new coach, a troubling response from Sounders ownership to players’ request for a larger share of Club World Cup revenue, the Storm’s offense is sputtering and it’s not worth asking whether Sam Darnold is the Seahawks’ starting QB.
